Newsroom leaders condemn UN rights council

GOTEBORG, Sweden (AP) -- A world congress of newspapers condemned the U.N. Human Rights Council on Tuesday, saying it has repeatedly sought to undermine freedom of the press to protect religious sensibilities.

The council's "proper role is to defend freedom of expression and not to support the censorship of opinion at the request of autocracies," said a resolution adopted by the World Association of Newspapers and World Editors Forum.

The U.N. General Assembly formed the Geneva-based Human Rights Council in March 2006 to succeed the U.N. Commission on Human Rights, which was sometimes criticized for too heavily considering the views of member states that did not adequately guarantee human rights.

"International human rights groups have expressed concern that the Council may be emulating the practices that discredited the Commission on Human Rights," said a forum statement.

In March, the U.N. council passed a resolution, sponsored by Pakistan on behalf of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, that "opened the door" to government restrictions "on the grounds that it might offend religious sensibilities," the statement said.

That resolution "goes against the spirit" of the council's mandate to investigate abuses of free expression and called on the United Nations to ensure that international standards for free expression are supported and not undermined by the council, the forum said.

The UN Human Rights Commission is nothing but a mouthpiece for the terrorists.
