A Long Beach congresswoman who fell behind lin her payments on a $535,000 mortgage in Sacramento said in a written statement that she owns the home, but financial documents show the house was sold at public auction and has been in the possession of the buyer for weeks.
The auction for Rep. Laura Richardson's house, in Sacramento's Curtis Park neighborhood, took place on May 7. The transaction was detailed in public records filed with the county.
Richardson, a Democrat, a former Assembly member who was elected to the House last year, bought the 1,600-square-foot, three-bedroom house in January 2007, but soon fell behind in the payments.
The story of Richardson's Sacramento home is more than a tale of a real estate market gone sour. It is also an illustration of how far many candidates will go to seek elected office, even if it means quite literally mortgaging their own financial future.

She is a good Democrat, right?
Nothing here to see folks. Move along.
If there is a problem, it must be that the real estate market has soured. And good Democrats will blame that somehow on George W. Bush. Bottom line - she is a victim and a good Democrat. So this story doesn’t matter.
Now, a Republican having a foreclosure problem would have been due to real estate speculation or other malicious intent. But, since she’s a good Democrat, by definition, nothing of that sort is part of this story.
Or maybe she's just a deadbeat
Left out this article is that she has not had 1, not two, but 3 homes forclosed on! 3!!!
I don’t know what I find more offensive, this politician walking out on her mortgage, or the fact that they are getting $334 per square foot for housing there. Sheesh, for $334 a square foot I could build the Taj Mahal around here, I bet her place was a dump.
Heh. Is she from Memphis or something?
Let me state the obvious.
Budgets are not really suited for politicians.
They pander to whatever interest will keep them in office.
She can make $170,000 plus stipends and still expect taxpayers to foot her bill with their tax money.
She, along with many others, should be voted out, then begin the process of term limits.
You're right on the nose. In other statements, she's blamed the whole thing on the economy and the difficulty of having to move multiple times, and announced that it has enabled her to have new insight into the problems of those 'trapped in the subprime crisis'.
It's all in my best interests, though, because if I ever heard a Democrat politician accept responsibility for anything he or she had done, I'd probably burst a blood vessel.
