Jeep tourism in Ouray County is facing delays as the countys road and bridge department plows through overwhelming amounts of snow on the areas most popular trails.
Were still in our beginning stages, .... The usual 10-day plowing project is already weeks behind...
In a normal year, Yankee Boy usually has 2 to 3 feet on the road and is easy to work, he said. But this is no normal year, and where the crew started plowing, the road was covered with more than 8 feet and it only got deeper.
Also hindering progress were several snowslides that havent run in almost a century.
They brought down 100-year-old trees ..."

We must relocate the Polar Bears and Penguins there, before it is too late.
Climate Change
Global Cooling
So when can we start hearing reports of the flooding from the melting snow pack?
I sure wouldn’t want to snow plow that shelf road section on the road from Ouray to Yankee Boy Basin! That is narrow and hundreds of feet straight down on one side!
Doesn’t look as though gorbal warming is affecting them. lol
Took the train ride from Durango to Silverton years ago, what beautiful country that is.
Do you know if that rail line goes on to Ouray or does it stop at Silverton?
The train stops in Silverton for lunch, then returns to Durango.
Lots of good skiing, hiking, mining, jeeping...too.
The jeep tour operators and jeep rental places in Ouray will be hurthing if they can’t get the road open. Sure is good for the water supply though.
Cottonwood Pass remains closedThe road, Chaffee County Road 306,
is buried under more than 18 feet of snow
in most places, ..
The "other" narrow gauge railroad -- Cumbres and Toltec. The date? Last Saturday, May 24!!!
(The engine pulling the passenger train stalled in deep snow. The cars were cut and tied down, and the engine broke trail to the top of the 10,000+ feet pass. The picture shows crews replenishing sand used to keep the drivers from slipping.)
Maybe algore can buy another huge mansion to heat and cool, and our liberals can fly more miles pimping obama so that global warming can actually start warming the planet and get these guys out from under the snow.
The real jeeping in the San Juans doesn't start till mid July. The passes:Engineer, Cinnamon, Black Bear, Imogene, etc. are not usually passable till after 4th of July and will have wild flowers until the end of September. Sure Yankee boy basin and pikepsee gulch will be snowed in, but really summer up there begins in July.
Thanks, that’s a great pic. Surprised they tried running in that weather.
Hey, they’re Jeeps. Just turn ‘em loose and watch the fun!
Already started. Last week ranchers were bringing livestock into the fairgrounds for safety. One report said rivers are 7ft to 10ft above flood stage. Here’s the only email I hadn’t deleted, yet.

Nice photo. Is that your backyard? : )
Same here(actually did the trip twice, once in the mid eighties the other in the early nineties... great trip). Stayed at a place called the Iron Horse Inn...beautiful country indeed.
We took some out-of-country visitors to Ouray two weeks ago. Box Canyon Falls ( a deep and narrow canyon with a crashing waterfall where you take a trail right up to the place where the falls swirl into the rocks) was incredibly awesome. When the snow really starts melting in a month , it's going to be insane. I swear the very ground was shaking.
