Somali forces rescued a hijacked ship carrying food to this desperately poor African nation Tuesday, as a top security official accused U.S. troops stationed off the lawless coast of failing to combat growing piracy.
Seven pirates were arrested and three were wounded in the raid on the Dubai-flagged al-Khaleej, said Abdullahi Said Samatar...
"It is sad that the American forces off the coast of Somalia are here for fun and are not combatting the pirates," ...
A spokesman for the transitional government, Abdi Hagi Gobdon, welcomed French and U.S. efforts to combat piracy and guard the country's coastline.
The transitional government "is not in position to safeguard the country's waters," he told the AP on Tuesday. "Therefore, Somalia welcomes and encourages the initiative of the U.S. and France to establish international forces to combat pirates along the Somali coastline."
The U.S. and France are drafting a U.N. resolution that would allow countries to chase and arrest pirates off Somalia's coast, responding to a spate of attacks, including this week's hijacking of a Spanish tuna boat.
France's U.N. ambassador, Jean-Maurice Ripert, said the resolution would authorize foreign governments to pursue pirate vessels into territorial waters, make arrests and prosecute suspects.
Countries in the region are also deeply concerned. Last week, 13 nations from the western Indian Ocean, Gulf of Aden and Red Sea agreed to a draft proposal that calls for sharing and reporting information on piracy and prosecuting those involved.

Um...mister, I believe the pirates are based ashore in Somalia. They are your problem.
OMG this stupid-ass statement at the very beginning of the article has me on the floor already! Stop, you're killing me!
Well,
Gee,
I guess we could leave...
I am sure the troops are kicking back with their feet in the water sipping umbrella drinks. What an Ahole!
Yup, somehow, someway, no matter how or where in the world excrements happen, it always ends up being our fault. And when we do come in to fix the mess, we still get blamed for something else.
Somehow I’m suspicious, maybe I’m oversuspicious, but the Somali forces did indeed easily and very quickly arrest the pirates. As if the pirates did not really resist very much the Somali forces. As if there is something fishy about the whole affair. Who are those pirates and where did they come from and who is it that must be made look bad and who wants to look good.....
Maybe I’m oversuspicious, but for the time being I will assume that the Somali forces and the Somali pirates are two conniving bunches of muslims from a country that hates America, creating a hoax to deceive the world, convincing not me.
Pirates are everyones problem, if they conduct their operations in international waters.
“I don’t want to be a pirate!”
Ahhhhhh....excuse me.......I think the U.S. is doing a good job. I haven’t heard of one U.S. ship taken by pirates yet! You want us to defend everyone else’s dingy’s.....let see some cash to help pay the cost.
"Yes, you and your date will be winging your way to beautiful sun drenched downtown Somalia!"
Islamic pirates are not supposed to bother ships from Islamic countries. This sounds like an "oopsie"
lol
...to beautiful sun drenched downtown Somalia!”

and somehow, I agree with what you said...
let the pirates attempt to sabotage an American vessel, and see what happens.... :/

>>”Chris Trelawny, head of security at the U.N.’s International Maritime Organization, which organized the meeting in Tanzania, said the solution to Somalia’s piracy problem is “not at sea. It is the restoration of law and order in that country.”<<
Another gem of wisdom from a UN official.
:’D
Thanks george and lowbridge.
No, they are provably everyone's problem
I guess I should have been clearer. A Somali official WHINES that the U.S.Navy should be doing more to stop Somali pirates.
Hello!! It is far easier to catch pirates when they are in port than when loose upon international waters. Hence my statement IMPLYING that said Somali official should stop passing the buck and start acting responsibly.
Maybe it’s impossible, but one can hope. There is no reason we should police everywhere when a nation can show some balls and do it themselves for a change.
