5 Supreme Court (Roman Catholic) justices on White House guest list (No Obama or Hillary)
AP on Yahoo ^ | 4/16/08 | AP

WASHINGTON - All five Roman Catholic justices on the Supreme Court were invited to Wednesday night's splashy White House dinner in honor of Pope Benedict XVI.

Republican presidential contender John McCain will be there, too. But Democratic rivals Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama, who had a nationally broadcast debate scheduled Wednesday night, were not invited.

About 250 guests were to attend the dinner. Benedict will not be there because he will be attending an evening prayer service with U.S. bishops.

The guests include former Los Angeles Dodgers baseball manager Tommy Lasorda, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Minority Leader John Boehner, Carl Anderson, supreme knight and chief executive officer, Knights of Columbus, Ken Hackett, president, Catholic Relief Services, George Weigel, author of a biography of Pope John Paul II, and more than 20 members of the clergy from around the country.

From the Supreme Court, the guests are Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Antonin Scalia, Anthony Kennedy, Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas.

The menu: morel-encrusted diver scallops, spatzle, angel hair asparagus bisque, veal, white truffle-potato dumplings, carrots and mushrooms, lettuces and candied pumpkin seeds, squash carpaccio, pumpkin oil vinaigrette, raspberry crisp and mint coulis.

Wouldn't it make more sense to sync up the guest of honor's schedule with the dinner in his name?

And why should the Democrats be there? They all look the other way from the anti-Catholic/anti-Christian/anti-faith elements in this society.

Deny them the photo-op. Good.

The Pope DOES NOT eat in public . . . period. [The lazy, agenda-driven media has neglected to provide this information to the public.]

Baby-killers need not apply, although Kennedy is a bit weak on the issue.

Rush just re-played the Army Chorus version of The Battle Hymn of the Republic as played on the White House lawn under beautiful blue skies. I got chills when they got to “the coming of the Lord.” Imagine a lib using the WH to allow singing about the coming of the Lord.

I read this, this morning, at The Anchoress:

Btw, the press is trying to make a big deal out of the fact that Benedict is not attending a White House dinner in his honor and they’re hinting it is a “snub” of President Bush. Hello…as John Allen - who would know - writes, the pope does not eat in public. Ever. The pope does not “go to dinners.” The American Press really does not understand that the pope is not an American politico.

I've been Catholic my whole life, and I never knew the pope doesn't eat in public. Is that a personal thing or is it standard for all popes?

I still think its odd that he's not there and they're still holding a dinner in his honor. Seems kind of pointless.

It has nothing to do with schedule. The Pope is not allowed to have dinner in the house of a head of state.

I have the Navy chorus version on a CD. The part, “... as He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free....” always evokes in me a feeling of gratitude and honor for all who have served in the military, both those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and all of those who were willing to do so, but spared. God bless our service members!

I double checked my sources and according to them, he was an Episcopalian but in the 1990’s he joined the Baptist church.

You've just GOT to add some green beans with fatback, maybe some collards or turnip greens with ham hock, and hoppin' john (black eye peas and rice). Then it would be PERFECT.

Around here, btw, it's one word: "SWEETEA". The iced is a given.

I believe the reason that the pope does not attend fancy dinner parties is that they are seen as too extravagant for the leader of Christ’s church.

That menu is a little light on red meat, IMHO. But whatever the Chef decides, the Sous-chef makes happen. I'm not a big fan of sea-food when dining out, except for Friday and Saturdays, when it's generally recently delivered. Never for brunch on Sunday. And absolutely never on Tuesdays.

But what do I know, I'm just a Sous-chef. ;)

My wife always orders hot tea so to make sure I don’t get the same I always order it with ice. Never developed a taste for collards or turnip greens and the hocks go in the pinto beans and the taters are usually fried, with several green onions on the side. Also I just like my black eyed peas straight up - no rice. Guess that’s the difference between Georgia and Texas cookin’.

McCain has attended a Baptist church for a number of years, but he has never actually been baptized in it. All of the Congressional directories have listed him as an Episcopalian without any correction from him. It appears that his "conversion" came just last year, while he was campaigning in a heavily Baptist state.

Personally, If I was always wearing white, I would feel very uncomfortable eating in front of people wearing black tuxedos.

Especially if spaghetti was the main course.

As I understand it all Popes. The priest on CNN mentioned an event involving John Paul 2 where he attended an event that turned out to be a dinner and his aides had to tell them not to serve him.
