Social Conservatives Warn against Romney as McCain's VP
By Penny Starr

(CNSNews.com) - In a full-page letter ad that will run Saturday in an Arizona newspaper where Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) will be on the presidential campaign trail, leading social conservatives warn the GOP hopeful against picking Mitt Romney as his vice presidential running mate. Click to see full quote

"I know (Romney) to be a very dangerous and deceitful person," Gregg Jackson told Cybercast News Service about his reasons for helping draft and signing the open-letter style ad.

"He's the only one to establish abortion on demand for $50 as part of his very own socialist health care plan," Jackson said, referring to the plan put into place in Massachusetts when Romney was governor of the state.

Jackson, author of "Conservative Comebacks to Liberal Lies" and a talk show host on WRKO in Boston, said Romney is the most liberal of all the presidential candidates, including Democrats Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

Conservative activist Paul Weyrich, who supported Romney when he was in the presidential race, also signed the letter.

"We were very grateful when (Weyrich) came to see the light," Peter LaBarbera, founder of Republicans for Family Values and president of Americans for Truth, told Cybercast News Service.

LaBarbera and Jackson joined 24 others in signing the letter, a group that also included J. Matt Barber of Concerned Women for America and William J. Murray of the Religious Freedom Coalition.

LaBarbera said social conservatives want McCain to nominate "somebody that has solid pro-family and pro-life credentials."

Jackson said he had no doubts about the significance of McCain's VP choice.

"(McCain) will not win unless he can effectively mobilize and energize the GOP base, euphemistically called 'value voters' or Evangelical Christians," Jackson said. "There are 40 million of us, and I say, 'Hey Pal, if you want my vote, you'd better pick an authentically conservative running mate.'

"We don't want Hillary Clinton dressed up in a Reagan suit," he added.

Politics makes strange bedfellows. Poor Mitt, the last great hope to stop McRINO, must feel used and abused.

Like father, like son. Mitt got brainwashed somehow into believing that he could actually win the GOP nomination.

But, but, how can that be? Didn’t Rush and Sean Hannity, Michael Savage and Miss Laura tell us that romney was the only real conservative in the race?

Even if you are a Mitt fan, which I admit I am not, I don’t see where adding him to the ticket helps at all. It won’t win Massachusetts for McCain, probably wouldn’t help in Michigan, wouldn’t deliver Utah as McCain will win there anyway, and doesn’t bring in conservatives in large numbers in any of the close states where they may otherwise sit out.

I am not trying to trash Mitt at all, butI just see no reason to add him to the ticket from a political standpoint.

I would like to be a mouse in the corner and know as to why.

McQueeq is toasted on one side.. Hillary will get to the other side in due time.. Borat Obama is already a laughing stock.. Not in polite company of course.. but privately.. Even among many blacks.. Not all blacks are racist.. many are but not all.. Borat could actually win IF he had somebody to tell him the truth and adjust his speeches accordingly.. He doesn't.. He wants to hear what he wants to hear.. and will to the end..

McQueeq is cash strapped.. NO money for stawberries..

Oh, don’t worry. McQueeg’s cancer will come back like an unstoppable rebel force. You’ll have President Romney happening before 2012 if he’s the Veep.

What a ridiculous claim. It's hard to believe anything from someone who would say that.

Mit is much better off quietly supporting the current ticket from afar, and preparing to pick up the pieces in 2012 after this madness has passed.

General question: Is anyone ready to do away with “Winner take all” in the Republican Primaries?

Is anyone completely satisfied with “Winner take all” in the Republican Primaries??

Please send McCain these for campaign contributions. Tell him they are worth the same as his RINO platform. Worthless! Photobucket

From the article:
“Conservative activist Paul Weyrich, who supported Romney when he was in the presidential race, also signed the letter.”

There was a spasm of confused panic among conservatives this primary, and Romney’s 100 million dollar spending spree succeeded in contributing or even creating that confusion.

Based on the first 57 years of his life before 2005, I still have no idea at all what his true agenda was in his desperation to be president and leader of the republican party, although I can look at the bitterness of his father’s defeat at the hands of the Goldwater and Reagan conservatives for a clue.

We will never know what would have happened if he had not tried to run as a conservative, or better yet, not run at all.

The only real one with any chance, unfortunately. They pushed Thompson first, though.

I have to disagree with your conclusion, but it is refreshing that you offered the criticism in a rther constructive and intelligent way. I respect that.

Current polling shows Michigan to be rather competitive between McCain and either Dem. With Romney’s strong support in the state, that could well be enough to tip those 17 ECVs in our favor. And beyond the other reasons why I am very supportive of Mitt being the VP choice, I think tactically this is why McCain will end up choosing Mitt more than any other.

I will concede your point on Mass. Romney will not turn that into a win unless it was already going to be a landslide. And of course you are right about Utah, that’s a gimme regardless of who our nominee is.

In additional to Michigan though, both Nevada and Colorado are going to be very close states. Those are states where Romney performed very well and again could be the difference maker. Regionally this year it’s the midwest, not the south, that is going to be the true battleground. If that holds true, it makes Romney the best choice.

Fred Thompson, Jim DeMint or J.C. Watts.

No--Actually Rush said Thompson was the only conservative, but the media made short shrift of him.

McCain needs a southern conservative---Fred Thompson.

Barring Fred, Mitt would be good--at least he understands business. Maybe he could stop some of this global baloney supported by UN sycophants and the Goron.

Not THIS social conservative.

I would be very glad to see Mitt Romney on the ticket.

Like it or not, social conservatives will likely not decide this election; rather I believe, crossover dems will.

Romney will appeal to those voters who are dissatisfied with the dem choice but question McCain’s stamina. Mitt is quite the contrast- handsome, articulate and young enough.
