Critical Threats: Blank When None
Afghanistan to Ask NATO for Bigger Army

Afghan officials will go to the NATO summit in Romania Thursday with a request: pay to increase our national Army by 40 percent. A bigger Army, Afghan officials argue, will allow the US and other coalition members to scale back in the coming years.

This appeal comes amid pleas from the US and Canada for other NATO members to commit more to the Afghanistan mission, which many analysts say has floundered over the past year for lack of resources and a coherent strategy. France is expected to contribute another 1,000 forces and Germany is likely to make a bigger commitment.

But American and Afghan government sources with knowledge of the expected Afghan proposal say that an increase from the current authorization of 86,000 Afghan Army soldiers to 120,000 is the only way to create an enduring defense against a resurgent Taliban and elusive Al Qaeda operatives. Free Republic Update: My Comments (Pings), System Upgrade and Spelling and Time Zone Breakage

Posted on 04/07/2008 3:18:37 AM PDT by John Robinson

First up, made a change to the My Comments (aka Pings aka “New Comments to You”) page. You can now clear your comments page by using the new “Clear Pings” link. This is the only way to remove the “New Comments to You” indicator. (You can still view all past comments to you via “View All”)

Next up on the menu: I’ve been upgrading the system software on all our servers. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way the spell checker broke and the new version of that software depends on software that I haven’t yet been able to upgrade (because that software depends on a kernel feature that isn’t available using the ancient kernel I have installed.) What this all means is that I will be taking a drive up to San Jose in the very near future (Monday night) to perform delicate surgery with a very large hammer. Once that is done, the spell checker will work.

I’m also aware that the time zone preference is not working, and I believe that problem may also be fixed by the same large hammer that will fix the spell checker (it’s a very big hammer.)

So in summary, clear your pings, don’t make any spelling mistakes until Tuesday and kick back and enjoy the California sun.

“Blasts hit foreigners’ complex in Yemen”
By AHMED AL-HAJ, Associated Press Writer
Sun Apr 6, 5:57 PM ET

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “SAN’A, Yemen - A housing complex used by foreigners in Yemen’s capital came under attack late Sunday, with explosives shattering windows but causing no injuries, U.S. and Yemeni officials said.

The U.S. Embassy in Yemen said “three explosive rounds” hit the compound in the upscale Haddah neighborhood. Two rounds exploded inside the compound and another blew up outside the building, it said in a statement.

“The Embassy advises all U.S. citizens to exercise caution in this area of the city,” the statement said.

After the blasts, Westerners were seen evacuating the compound. Some rolled suitcases and carried boxes to vehicles with diplomatic plates. Women huddled in idling cars, while children lugged backpacks.

One of the Yemeni security officials, describing himself as the head of security in the area, said the blast was caused by multiple “projectiles.””

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The United States and Israel seek to pressure North Korea to cease its nuclear cooperation with Iran, which is one of the motives behind their agreement to disclose details on the air-force strike in Syria last September. According to foreign press reports, the strike targeted a nuclear installation built with North Korean assistance.

According to information obtained by Washington and Jerusalem, North Korea transferred technology and nuclear materials to Iran to aid Tehran’s secret nuclear arms program.”

I’ve been monitoring the fallout over the Iraqi move on Mookies men, and while it is a mixed bag, I agree with the observations here:

http://www.strategypage.com/qnd/iraq/articles/20080406.aspx

The Mahdi army lost 571 killed, 881 wounded, 490 captured, and 30 surrendered, in a week of fighting. While there were defections from a GREEN unit, the rest of the forces held together well.

What is still developing is the presence of Iranian forces directly assisting Mookies forces. Not good news if Iran is trying to play the innocent party in the event of a direct American response.

“Not good news if Iran is trying to play the innocent party...”

I agree with the caveat that Iran hasn’t tried real, real hard to pretend their innocent, in my opinion.

Coalition Troops in Iraq Kill Five, Capture Eight Terrorists

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, April 7, 2008 – Coalition troops killed five terrorists and captured eight suspects during counterinsurgency operations in Iraq today, military officials reported.

— U.S. forces detained four suspected Iranian-backed “special groups” terrorists and killed another individual during an operation in Baghdad. The deceased terrorist was linked to an explosives and weapons network tied to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

— U.S. troops operating in eastern Baghdad killed an insurgent and destroyed a vehicle used in transporting rocket-launching rails. The terrorists were seen to launch four 107 mm rockets toward a coalition forward operating base. The terrorists departed the launch site in a white van, which was subsequently engaged by missiles fired by a coalition aircraft. The vehicle and driver were destroyed. “We killed a terrorist from a rocket team involved in the rocket attacks on the International Zone in Baghdad,” said Army Col. Allen Batschelet, chief of staff for Multinational Division Baghdad.

— Near Taji, coalition forces targeted an individual who attacked “Sons of Iraq” citizen security groups with roadside bombs and has ties to al-Qaida leaders in the region. Coalition forces killed an armed terrorist during a gun battle. The deceased person was identified as the targeted individual. Another person was detained in the operation. Two civilian Iraqi women were wounded in the firefight.

— Coalition forces targeted an al-Qaida safe house east of Balad, where a leader in the Baghdad car-bombing network was believed to be staying. Coalition forces engaged two men, killing both.

— In Beiji, coalition forces detained three individuals. One of the detainees is linked to the movement of terrorists and materials and also was allegedly involved in the placement of roadside mines.

In yesterday’s Iraq operations:

— U.S. air strikes killed nine special groups terrorists during counterinsurgency operations in Baghdad. An American air weapons team used Hellfire missiles to dispatch the terrorists.

— Coalition forces in Mosul detained three suspected terrorists while targeting a known associate of al-Qaida in Iraq regional leadership wanted for conducting and coordinating attacks against Iraqi and coalition forces.

In April 4 operations:

— Iraqi police secured a weapons cache in Jabr al Ansari after receiving information from a detainee. The cache contained rockets, machine guns, a mortar tube and a rocket-propelled grenade launcher.

In other news, Iraqi forces in Qasim seized the largest explosively formed penetrator cache to date April 2. The armor-piercing munitions were loaded onto a 6-ton truck inside a garage. The cache contained more than 1,000 bomb-making components; more than 3,000 pounds of explosives; 45 107 mm rockets and stands; several devices used to detonate roadside bombs; 250 machine-gun rounds; 10 60 mm mortar shells and a 60 mm mortar stand. The rockets are believed to be Iranian-made, officials said.

Coalition Forces Go After Rocket, Mortar Squads

By John J. Kruzel
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, April 7, 2008 – Coalition forces are increasingly focused on destroying enemy rocket and mortar teams following attacks on two Baghdad sites yesterday that killed three U.S. servicemembers and wounded 26 others.
Rockets rained on Baghdad’s heavily fortified International Zone around 3:30 p.m. yesterday, killing two and wounding 17, military officials said. Several hours later, mortars struck a forward operating base in the eastern section of the Iraqi capital, killing one and injuring nine.

“We’re definitely going after the mortar and rocket teams. They don’t just hit us, they kill innocent civilians and governmental employees, and it’s basically one of our focus areas right now,” Army Lt. Col. Steve Stover, a Multinational Division Baghdad spokesman, said today. “Over the next several days, as long as they keep trying to do this, we’re going to keep going after them.”

In a separate attack around 5:30 a.m. today, coalition forces saw insurgents in a white van launching four 107 mm rockets at a forward operating base in the eastern Baghdad district of New Baghdad, according to a Multinational Force Iraq news release. It is unclear whether anyone was killed or injured in the attack. Coalition forces retaliated a half-hour later, firing two Hellfire missiles that destroyed the white van and killed its driver, the release said.

Military officials said those perpetrating the attacks are criminals formerly aligned with Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. They are in violation of a pledge by Sadr renewed last week to cease violence against coalition and Iraqi forces, officials said.

Violence in the Iraqi capital has been “contained to certain areas,” Stover said, adding that coalition forces aim to engage rocket and mortar teams before they are able to launch attacks around Baghdad.

“If we can positively identify them and we can use a precision weapon to take those guys out, we will do it,” he said. “We won’t quit. Our main mission here is to protect the Iraqi people, and we take that job very seriously.”

The ramped-up violence comes before Army Gen. David H. Petraeus and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan C. Crocker provide Congress a follow-up to the military and diplomatic progress update they delivered in September. The top U.S. military commander and diplomat in Iraq are slated to delivery their testimony tomorrow and the next day. They are expected to describe results of the 33,000-troop surge launched last year to tamp down violence in Iraq and help prepare Iraq’s national security forces to maintain security.

The troop surge has been lauded as a successful U.S. strategic shift that helped quash sectarian clashes and other violence in Baghdad and elsewhere in Iraq.

One military official, speaking on background, suggested that increased rocket and mortar attacks in Baghdad likely are related to the upcoming hearings here.

“You’d be naïve to think that this uptick in violence has nothing to do with General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker’s testimony on the Hill,” the official said.

Afghan, U.S. Forces Capture Militants in Nuristan Province Raid

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, April 7, 2008 – Afghan and coalition security forces operating in Afghanistan’s Nuristan province cleared Kendal and Shok villages of insurgents and captured several suspects yesterday, military officials reported, while coalition troops and Afghan police seized two militants in operations in Khowst province.

The combined Afghan-U.S. force repelled the attack with accurate small-arms fire and crew-served weapons. During the long battle, the insurgents reinforced their positions in several compounds with large groups of fighters. Close-air support was called upon to dislodge the heavily armed insurgents from their reinforced defensive positions.

After neutralizing the threat, the combined force detained numerous insurgents, secured several compounds, and discovered fully loaded weapons and stores of ammunition.

There were no reports of civilian casualties, officials said. Following a thorough search of the areas, the combined Afghan and U.S. forces withdrew from the area with the detained personnel under the control of Afghan National Police participating in the mission.

Kendal and Shok villages have long been identified as insurgent strongholds, officials said. Villagers in the area have lived in fear of insurgents supporting the Hizb-E-Islami Gulbuddin terrorist organization. This operation will significantly reduce the terrorists’ ability to conduct future operations in the area, according to military officials.

In other news from Afghanistan, two suspected militants were detained yesterday during a joint Afghan police and coalition forces counterinsurgency operation in Khowst province, military officials reported.

Afghan national police and coalition troops searched compounds in the Sabari district as they searched for a militant sub-commander linked to roadside bomb attacks in the area. During their search, Afghan police confirmed that militants were not hiding or storing weapons or roadside bombs in a mosque on the compound. Two individuals with suspected links to the targeted senior militant were detained, and an AK-47 rifle was confiscated during the operation.

“Mindful of cultural sensitivities, only Afghan National Police entered the mosque to ensure it was not being inappropriately used by militants, and any individuals inside were unharmed,” said Army Maj. Chris Belcher, a coalition forces spokesman. “Coalition forces remained outside the mosque, ensuring non-combatant civilians on the compound were protected from possible hostilities.”
