Russian bomber again intercepted near U.S. Navy ship

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Russian bomber aircraft approached a U.S. aircraft carrier off the Korean coast on Wednesday and was intercepted by American fighter jets — the second such incident in less than a month, U.S. defense officials said.
According to the U.S. officials, a Russian bomber came within three to five nautical miles and flew 2,000 feet (610 meters) above the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier and its accompanying ships.
Two U.S. F/A-18 fighters were launched to intercept the Russian aircraft and escort it out of the area, according to one defense official.
Russian bombers over the past year have increased their flights near U.S. territory and U.S. naval assets, demonstrating their long-range strike capability.
In February, two Russian bombers approached the Nimitz near Japan and one flew over the carrier, escorted by a U.S. fighter jet. That was the first Russian overflight of a U.S. carrier since 2004.
Those operations come as Russian officials say they will revive some of the military power and reach allowed to collapse with the Soviet Union.
U.S. defense officials on Wednesday said they did not consider the Russian bomber flight a threat or concern.

Mahtab Shirani was nabbed Tuesday, February 26th, by members of the Chicago FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF), according to John W. Richardson, Chief of the University Police Department.

Thirty-three pilots across Canada have reported being flashed in the eyes by a laser beam while flying, including at least five incidents near Toronto's Pearson International Airport. Transport Canada is now investigating the incidents, which date back to 2005 and include at least 12 in Ontario.
"It is certainly a concern for us and we're watching it closely," spokesperson Kirsten Goodnough told CTV.ca, saying she has no explanation for the increasing frequency of incidents. The pilots have complained about someone on the ground shining a laser at their planes, penetrating the cockpit window and flashing the pilots in the eye. The source of the light is unclear.
Goodnough said some of the incidents around Toronto could have involved the small laser pointers used in boardrooms, but the devices would have to be relatively close to the plane to have a serious effect. She said the more powerful lasers that may be involved would be those used in surgery rooms or at laser light shows, but those are a lot bigger and require heavy machinery. The devices also require permits from Health Canada.

Someone is trying to blind pilots landing at Pearson International Airport, and other GTA airports, by shining a laser beam from the ground. At least five incidents have been reported by pilots since the beginning of the year, including one on Jan. 7 in which someone flashed a bright light at an Air Canada Jazz pilot from the time he was more than five kilometres from Pearson until he landed the airplane.
Air Canada spokesperson Deborah Baxter said there have been at least 11 incidents in the past year, with many more suspected of going unreported. "Transport Canada is very concerned about the increasing frequency of laser-related incidents," Baxter said.

PRISTINA -- Two rocket launchers have been siezed from a house in the tense, ethnically divided northern Kosovo town of Mitrovica, police said Wednesday. Islamist website allegedly under pressure from US Intelligence
"Elimination [of Jihad Material] from the Site Cannot Eliminate [Jihad] from Our Hearts" The message from the website administrator to its subscribers read: "We decided to remove the jihad sections because the [site] administration and its hosting company... received a letter from the American intelligence [agency indicating that] the site contains topics which, as usual, worry the American intelligence [agency]. The letter gave the site administration two options: [Either the agency] takes the site off the main host, 'Data Center' (i.e. SoftLayer), which is located in the USA, and reports it to the intelligence agency in our city, or we eliminate those jihad topics and close the [jihad] sections [on the website]. We had no choice but to accept the second option, to ensure the continuation of our communication with you... [You should know, however,] that eliminating [jihad content] from the website's sections cannot eliminate [jihad] from our hearts..."
However, a review of the content of http://www.al-farooq.net after the supposed removal of jihad content shows that the changes made by the site administration are merely cosmetic. While the site no longer includes designated jihad sections, it is still saturated with jihad-promoting material.
The establishment of jihad training camps in the British hinterlands raises disquieting questions with no easy answers: How many more might be there? How can they be detected? Questions like these should lead to considerations of the wisdom of the current no-holds-barred immigration policy, and of the loyalty of the larger Muslim community in Britain – questions that have never been satisfactorily answered. Exposure to the jihadist, Islamic supremacist ideology, says the self-styled British “former Islamist” Ed Husain, “that radicalism, that extremism, that ‘them-and-us’ mind set -- starts here on our streets in Britain.”
Why does it start on the streets in Britain, and what can be done about that? According to the Associated Press, “Hamid, originally from Tanzania, hand-picked recruits from mainstream mosques, inviting them for radical meetings at his home and then selecting a smaller number to attend the camps, police said.” Yet whenever law enforcement officials have broached the topic of monitoring activity inside mosques, they meet a barrage of indignation and criticism. The core problem is that, for all their ballyhooed condemnations of terrorism, peaceful Muslims in Britain and America have not moved in any great numbers to expose those who hold jihadist sentiments, much less to separate themselves from them and expel them from their mosques. There is no wall of separation in the British or American Muslim community between Muslims who accept Western pluralism and just want to live ordinary lives and those who hold to the same ideology of jihad and the destruction or subjugation of infidels to which “Osama bin London” had dedicated his life. There is no easy or reliable way to distinguish a Muslim who may be working to top the death total of the July 2005 London bombings from one who abhors the very idea.
Canada urged to lift news blackout on terrorism story
Several media organizations, including The Associated Press, are asking an appeals court to lift a news blackout on a terrorism case that one lawyer says includes charges of a plot to storm Canada’s parliament.
Authorities announced the arrest of 17 suspects in June 2006 after they allegedly tried to obtain three tons of ammonium nitrate. They accused the suspects of plotting terror attacks in southern Ontario and said they were inspired by al-Qaida.
One defense lawyer has said his client and some of the other suspects were charged with plotting to attack Parliament, take hostages and possibly behead the prime minister if their demands for the release of Muslim prisoners were not met.

“Police: Planned ‘Military Style Assault’ at High School Foiled”
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) —
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “State police detectives Michael Lamonaco and Kenneth Koenig, working with officials from the other agencies, then began a more extensive investigation and spoke with nine of the student’s acquaintances, described by Della Fave as five juveniles and four adult males, all of whom live in Belvidere or nearby White Township. Della Fave would not say whether any of them were also students.
“Investigators learned that the military-style plot was being developed, and that (those involved) had begun doing surveillance work at the school and were working to identify possible escape routes,’’ Della Fave said.
Authorities notified the student’s father, who voluntarily surrendered some guns in his house to authorities. Della Fave said all the weapons were legally registered and that the father has been assisting investigators.
The student, whose name was not disclosed, has been hospitalized for a mental health evaluation, Della Fave said. He has not yet been charged.
James M. Shipps, 22, of Belvidere, was charged with creating a false public alarm, making terroristic threats and hindering apprehension, Della Fave said. He was being held in the county jail on $50,000 bail. It was not immediately clear if he had retained a lawyer.”

Sons of Iraq in Sabbah Nissan discover weapons cache
BAGHDAD – The Sons of Iraq of Sabbah Nissan, a village southeast of Baghdad, discovered a large weapons cache and handed it over to Soldiers of Battery A, 1st Battalion, 10th Field Artillery at Forward Operating Base Hammer Feb. 28.
This was the most recent of 13 weapons caches the SOI have brought to Battery A since the inception of the SOI program in Sabbah Nissan.
The cache consisted of 28 rocket propelled grenade motors, five 125 mm artillery rounds, two 60 mm mortars, one 125 mm HEAT round, one 82 mm mortar, one rocket propelled grenade warhead, two fuses and a 155 mm round.
“The Sons of Iraq have given us two caches this week,” said Spc. Andrew Watson, from La Porte, Ind., Battery A. “They have given us about one a week, but this was one of the largest.”
Watson said the Sabbah Nissan’s SOI performance has improved consistently since they began working with the unit.
“At first, they weren’t very organized,” he said. “Many of their leaders had previously served in the Iraqi Army and they have used that training to instill more professionalism in the group.
“They have been trained and have come a long way from where they were. They are a lot more proficient in everything they do now,” Watson said. “They have seen how we set up water drops and vehicle searches, and are doing a good job of doing those on their own now.”
Pfc. Robert Meadows, from Jacksontown, Ohio, Battery A, said residents in the area have become more accepting of 3rd HBCT Soldiers and believes that has allowed Battery A and the SOI to find more caches based on information provided by them.
“The people here are very friendly,” Meadows said. “The children in the area wait for us along the side of the road and salute when we drive by. The adults wave when we are out. I’d say we have a good relationship.”
Many of the Soldiers believe the area is improving and will continue to do so in the future.
“I think things here will keep improving after we leave,” said Spc. Alex Katsan, from Grafton, W. Va., Battery A. “We are helping them less and less every time we go out. I can see them standing up and doing things on their own without our help.”
Watson said the SOI improvement is as an example of the progress happening in the area without the 3rd HBCT’s assistance.
“Sheik Kassam (leader of the SOI) is willing to work with us because he knows that we will do what we say we will and we are only here to back up what he is trying to do,” Watson said.
The good relationship Battery A has built with the local population will only help further the progress of the area, he added.
“The people here are working hard to secure their area and improve their quality of life,” Watson said. “Anything we have done to help them has been appreciated. I think they will continue to turn in caches and keep the area safe so they can keep moving forward.”
Explosive Ordnance Disposal personnel with 789th Ordnance Company, from Ft. Benning, Ga., currently attached to 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, secured the cache for future disposal.
The 1-10 FA is assigned to 3rd HBCT, 3rd Infantry Division, from Fort Benning, Ga., and has been deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom since March 2007.

ISWAT, U.S. Special Forces kill 9, detain 8 in Ninewa province
BALAD, Iraq – The Tal Afar Special Weapons and Tactics team, advised by U.S. Special Forces, killed nine criminals and detained eight suspects during an operation to disrupt an al Qaeda in Iraq cell south of Tal Afar in western Ninewa province March 2.
During the intelligence-driven operation against a known criminal support base and suspected training camp, Iraqi SWAT and U.S. SF targeted a cell responsible for assassinations, improvised explosive device attacks, and illegal traffic control points throughout the Tal Afar area. The cell is also suspected of conducting recent rocket attacks in the area against Iraqi civilians, Iraqi Security Forces and Coalition Forces.
When approaching the camp, several fighters attacked the lead Iraqi SWAT and U.S. SF vehicles with heavy fire from rifles and at least one machine gun. One SWAT vehicle was hit and disabled by a PKC machine gun, killing three Iraqi SWAT members and wounding three others.
ISWAT and U.S. SF continued while under heavy fire from several locations in the camp and adjacent wadi. During this engagement, nine enemy fighters were killed.
Three Iraqi civilians were wounded and treated on-site. Eight suspected cell members were detained for further questioning, including two who were wounded and evacuated to a Coalition Forces hospital for treatment. The three Iraqi SWAT team members were also evacuated for treatment.
The operation discovered 100 meters of electrical wire and 12 blasting caps for constructing IEDs, one PKC machine gun, one RPG-7 rocket launcher, four AK-47 rifles, nine grenades, more than 1,500 rounds of ammunition, and one Belgian-made landmine.
