FBI Investigates TN Trucking Company
WKRN Nashville ^ | 2/26/08

The FBI is investigating a Tennessee trucking company.

Agents from the FBI, Secret Service, Bureau of Immigration and Customs and several other agencies searched the Swift Transportation trucking company in Memphis on Monday.

Swift Transportation dispatches more than 500 trucks per day, transporting mainly for the United Parcel Service.

Employees said agents seized computers but authorities have not released what they were looking for.

"I haven't a clue,” said training driver James Richardson. “All I know is all of the training activities have been put on hold right now until an investigation is over...

Every so often a news story pops up that indicates that terrorists might be working on obtaining access to commercial trucks, possibly tankers. Is this FBI raid possibly related to terrorist activity? Time will tell.

FBI would be involved in any sort of interstate transit issues. I’m guessing it’ll be tax-related — withholdings for various states.

They must all be there to give sensitivity training to the employees regarding prayer rugs and prayer time.....I don’t believe for one second Training Activities have been put on hold, even if the article did say so..../s

Beats me ... maybe not, though. It could be that they've established a widespread pattern of avoiding state taxes. All I'm really saying is, I think it's something a whole lot more mundane than terrorism.

"Employees said agents seized computers but authorities have not released what they were looking for."

Uhh, why can't they just take the hard drive and let the company make an image of it so that they can continue to operate their business???? Other than being heavy handed there really isn't a reason to seize a case, motherboard, processor, memory, dvd drive, etc..... if all they are looking for is the data stored on the HD.

Or are they no longer afforded the position of being innocent until proven guilty of something????

Swift Trucking is a company that hires people and gives them the training needed to get a class A license. I ran into one of their drivers at a truck stop a few years ago and he could barely speak English. I was shocked when he asked me where to put the pump to fill the truck with diesel fuel. He didn’t know how to put fuel in a trailer truck he was suppose to be capable of driving. That is a scary thought.

That’s true.

I’ve dealt with several not-so-SWIFT drivers (as I called them) in the past. They all seemed to be from either Pakistan or Somalia.

Which reports? All I've seen is the sketchy report provided above.

You can learn a lot more from a hard drive than what's in the current set of files. There are ways of getting to the deleted stuff, even if it's been over-written.

“All I’m really saying is, I think it’s something a whole lot more mundane than terrorism.”

F.B.I., SECRET SERVICE, and BATFE are all involved in this with focus on the truck driver training school. It’s not taxes those organizations are concerned with. It will be something far more than mundane.

I was stationed at a driver training facility in 2006 in Fontana. Multiple muslims trained at the facility at the time. I minded my own business which was the Containeryard I was operating on the grounds of that facility. I did observe my associates in the driver training division were quite uneasy with the lot of those Muslim student drivers whom had an attitude problem. It was as though they all thought they were ‘SPECIAL’.

I’ll leave it at that.

Hence my post asking why they don't just take the HD instead of the whole case, motherboard, processor, etc.... all of which do not store any data, ever. And if they gave the company 10 minutes they could image their drive, give the FBI the original so that they can perform all the data forensics to their heart's delight, and then place that drive image on a brand new HD, plop it into their computer, and not miss a beat.

It more than likely is related to hiring illegals, but it wouldn’t be surprising if there’s more to it. It’s been a while, but several months ago I read on FR more than a few stories of tanker trucks disappearing. Never heard if they were recovered.

WOW! I'm completely shocked! I really, really thought that muzzie invaders would get protected status until they took out one of our major cities.

Sooooo many of our problems are owing to illegal immigration:

Paper boys learning a work ethic? They're gone, replaced by illegal adults driving battered jalopies in the early morning hours. Same for McD's, theater ticket-takers, gas-pumpers, many others.

And that's completely apart from the Muzzie America-haters, who are openly preached hate in US mosques.

What do you do when the national patient is DETERMINED to die?

Well, at least here is one time when we appear to be fighting back. KUDOS, but I really doubt it will last...

All of those are why anyone with a lick of sense in IT has multiple, off-site backups of their images and business critical data. It may be expensive, but the one time you need it, it’s priceless.

Which is why I use "Windows Washer" from Webroot with the "bleach" setting which overwrites deleted files ten times - not even the NSA is recovering from that.

Or if you are nefarious enough, just store the data on a PGP encrypted drive. As far as I know, the feds have never cracked Kevin Mitnick’s laptop.

My husband is an o/o contracted to Swift. He has worked for them for over ten years. He also used to be a trainer, and I’ll have to say he’s told me some hair raising stories. He works out of the Lathrop terminal and these students he trains can’t hardly change gears much less read a map. But the most scary part about these alleged students is they pass a driving test through a third party, who signs them off, and not through the dmv (makes you wonder). I’d speculate someones palm gets greased real good. So many of them are not qualified to drive anything bigger than a bicycle, forget about a big rig. He knows within the first few hours if they know how to drive a truck. Unfortunately, most of the time he kicks them off because they don’t know their butt from a hole in the ground. He really knows how to piss off the office when he turns the students back in. He did occassionally get a student who was good, but the bad ones were plentiful.

PGP is nice, but too many people suspect that it is a construct of the NSA. If I need to really encrypt anything I use a 256bit encryption with a one time cipher. Not even Fort Meade is busting that.

Yes and some people believe that we never landed on the moon. In addition to PGP there's also a pretty nice app called Truecrypt.

I don’t wish to sound tinfoil, but if there is a question about an encryption method and there are more secure methods readily available, why risk it?
