Finnish patient gets new jaw from own stem cells

Scientists in Finland said they had replaced a 65-year-old patient's upper jaw with a bone transplant cultivated from stem cells isolated from his own fatty tissue and grown inside his abdomen.

the breakthrough opened up new ways to treat severe tissue damage and made the prospect of custom-made living spares parts for humans a step closer to reality.

"There have been a couple of similar-sounding procedures before, but these didn't use the patient's own stem cells that were first cultured and expanded in laboratory and differentiated into bone tissue,"...

the patient was recovering more quickly than he would have if he had received a bone graft from his leg.

"From the outside nobody would be able to tell he has been through such a procedure," ...

She added, the team used no materials from animals -- preventing the risk of transmitting viruses than can be hidden in an animal's DNA...

Stem cells are the body's master cells and they can be found throughout the blood and tissues. Researchers have recently found that fat contains stem cells which can be directed to form a variety of different tissues.

Using a patient's own stem cells provides a tailor-made transplant that the body should not reject.

Ha, take that embryonic stem cell proponents.

You are exactly right. What's the score now between embryonic and adult stem cell research?

The thing is there is too much money involved to let the truth be told!

No embryos were hurt in the making of this medical miracle. And as a Finn, I’m proud it happened there...

Not a foot ball fan but I watched my first ever foot ball game last year. My 9 year old grand son was playing and I actually enjoyed it.

His team lost big time but that boys got heart!

Me either! Let me rephrase... I am a Finnish-American with parents born in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

This is something I first saw about three years ago and it has stuck with me ever since.

What you see is a human ear grown on the back of a mouse.

This first showed the promise that some day we would be able to manipulate genes to grow spare body parts within our own

It is an amazing thing to see.

I had always thought you would need to grow a whole body to clone parts, but this and future advances have made it clear that isn't the case at all..

True, the superbowl is about the only game I pay attention to anymore. Glad to hear your grandson is healthy and active no less. I am sure his generation will reap the eventual benefits of experiments such as this.
