Deal Reached on Tax Rebates for Stimulus

WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic and Republican congressional leaders reached a tentative deal Thursday on tax rebates of $300 to $1,200 per family and business tax cuts to jolt the slumping economy. Congressional officials close to the negotiations said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Republican Leader John Boehner of Ohio reached agreement in principle in a telephone call Thursday morning.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the two wanted key members of their parties to sign off on the accord before any announcement.

The accord came as the White House said Thursday an agreement was imminent.

Pelosi, D-Calif., agreed to drop increases in food stamp and unemployment benefits during a Wednesday meeting in exchange for gaining rebates of at least $300 for almost everyone earning a paycheck, including low-income earners who make too little to pay income taxes.

Families with children would receive an additional $300 per child, subject to an overall cap of perhaps $1,200, according to a senior House aide who outlined the deal on condition of anonymity in advance of formal adoption of the whole package. Rebates would go to people earning below a certain income cap, likely individuals earning $75,000 or less and couples with incomes of $150,000 or less.

$300? I thought it was gonna be $800.

Tax relief like this is miniscule.

“rebates of at least $300 for almost everyone earning a paycheck, including low-income earners who make too little to pay income taxes”

So...let me get this straight. If I’m single and make over $75,000 a year, I DO NOT get a rebate, but people who pay absolutely NO taxes get $300? Tell me - what exactly are they getting a rebate FROM??

I think any temporary rebates should come out of congressional pay.

If the democrats were honest, they’d refuse this tax cut/tax rebate and instead raise taxes. After all, they claim tax cuts do nothing for the economy and tax increases allow us to pay down the debt, invest in new fuels, invest in education, yada yada yada...LOL

this deal stinks...

you ARE getting a rebate....then giving it to someone who doesn't pay taxes....the feds are cutting out you as the middleman in the transaction.

Well, we need to give money to people who don’t pay taxes.

Plus, look for the rebates to be delivered in June. Less than half what was said to be needed, and almost 2 business quarters before they begin to hit the market. Some stimulus.

“Tell me - what exactly are they getting a rebate FROM??”

When you are putting on your morning makeup or doing your hair, look in the mirror and ask your question. Your answer will be very evident.

From each according to his means... etc etc. just make sure the cash gets into the nail salons, scratch-off lottery distributors and slot machines ASAP.

If I can get a rebate without ever having paid income taxes in the first place, do you think Best Buy will let me redeem some of their great rebates without ever having bought the item??

Not only that, I am getting screwed because God only blessed us with one child instead of the 5 or 6 we wanted.

Oh well, goes to prove once again, that it pays to be successful./sarc
