WEAPONS OF CHOICE Shopper pulls gun, stops robbery cold Held suspect at grocery store until police officers arrived

A grocery store customer in Indianapolis is being credited with halting an armed robbery by pulling his own weapon and pointing it at the assailant until police arrived.

According to a report in the Indianapolis Star, Charlie Merrell, 51, was in a checkout line at a grocery store called Bucks IGA on the city's south side when a "masked man jumped a nearby counter and held a gun on a store employee."

The police report cited by the newspaper said the incident happened at 5:17 in the afternoon Monday as Merrell was doing some year-end shopping.

"While the suspect was demanding cash from the workers," according to the police report, "Merrell pulled his own handgun, pointed it at the robber and ordered him to put down his weapon."

Most folks probably woulda just shot the robber instinctively.

that said...I have pulled a gun on someone and not killed them....more than once actually

but they weren’t armed with a firearm

we had a freeper a few years ago killed a robber in a bar...shot him in the head when the robber pulled his pistol...somewhere in the midwest

forget who that was(?)

If only this would have happened in Arkansas — Huck would have pardoned the robber.

Heck, if it had happened here in California, the robber would have sued the armed citizen for emotional distress.

Oh he for sure wanted to live...even took his mask off!

"...At that point, the report said, "the suspect placed his gun and a bag of cash on the counter, dropping some of the money … the suspect removed his mask and lay on the floor." ..."

Another good story for your ping list to start off the new year.

I think 2008 is going to be a good year.

In this poll Hunter is up 3% and even with Paul and Thompson.

I agree! Let’s put a conservative in the White House and fill congress with the same.

So, if I read this story correctly, the robber had an unloaded gun and the shopper didn’t have a round in the chamber when he drew. Interesting.

Yes it is dumb to commit armed robbery. But if you are going to do it, better to do it with an unloaded gun and not risk unintentionally committing murder.

As for the shopper the article does not state the specifics of his weapon. Some older automatics can be fired by striking the exposed hammer with out the trigger being pulled. So the shopper may so he may be safer carrying unloaded.

Merril had not chambered a round until after drawing and pointing his weapon at the robber!

Not smart. It is a good thing the robber was even stupider and carried an empty weapon.

Two dopes with empty weapons.

Those Dwain, Duane, Dewayne, Dwaine named fellows must have some kind of name programming that forces them to make poor choices.

Unbelievable!

Just as dumb as racking the pump on a shotgun.

[I won’t point a loaded shotgun at the guy and hold him for the authorities. I’ll make this really scary noise instead so he can run away and come back later. He’ll probably steal the shotgun.]

Police reported Merrell had a valid permit to carry the handgun,

Dwain Smith, 19, was being held in the Marion County Jail on a bond of $30,000 on initial charges of robbery, criminal confinement, pointing a firearm, battery and carrying a handgun without a license.

Once again showing that honest citizens follow gun laws, but criminals never do, making gun laws mostly useless.
