Thompson Pounces
Spectator blog ^ | 12/16/2007 | Jennifer Rubin

Hard to conjure up that image but it's true. Thomspon sends out an e-mail blast taking issue with Romney's statement today on MTP that "every piece of legislation which came to my desk in the coming years as a Governor, I came down on the side of preserving the sanctity of life." The "fact check" includes this:

"Romney's health care legislation provides taxpayer-funded abortions for a co-pay of just $50. Romney vetoed EIGHT provisions in his health care bill that he deemed objectionable, including the expansion of dental benefits to Medicaid recipients. He did not veto Planned Parenthoods' guaranteed position on the Advisory Board or ensure that abortions were covered only in medically necessary situations (as required by MA court ruling). All abortions are covered in the Commonwealth Care program with no medically necessary limitation. Under the program, abortions are available for a copay of $50...

Romney included in his health care legislation a guarantee that Planned Parenthood would have a representative on his MassHealth Payment Policy Advisory Board. No such provision was included for a pro-life representative. ...

Romney forced private Catholic hospitals to provide the morning-after-pill, a position applauded by Democrats and pro-abortions groups. .."

The Spectator blog is ripping Romney’s MTP appearance apart.
Lots of lies there.

Example:

Romney today said the NRA backed him in 2002. I think this is not correct. In 2002 he said in a debate with Shannon O’Brien “We do have tough gun laws in Massachusetts; I support them. I won’t chip away at them; I believe they protect us and provide for our safety.” I found it hard to believe the NRA would support someone with that viewpoint. Indeed, the NRA grading sheet from 2002 shows no endorsement and gives both he and his opponent a “B” which is defined for a candidate hasn’t held office as someone “ who may have made some statements or taken positions against the NRA on some issues.” I have not received any response to my inquiry to the Romney camp on this.

This is the problem I have with Mormon’s like Gordon Smith or Harry Reid, there is no deep personal conviction. There is no personal walk with Jesus so they become pragmatists in politics.

FRED is now hitting hard and often. Taking his argument directly to the People of Iowa. Huckelberry and Romney would both be such a poor choice for Conservatives. I pray that the People of Iowa listen carefully and choose a true Conservative like FRED.

FRED THOMPSON (true consistent Conservative Federalist) - NATIONAL SECURITY EXPERT (I’ll do whatever it takes to stop the bastards, include water-boarding) - 2ND AMENDMENT ADVOCATE (arm all legal citizens and criminals will become more hesitant) - SECURE AND SEAL THE BORDERS (don’t give them sanctuary anywhere, don’t hire them, don’t rent to them, don’t give them credit, don’t give them rights they don’t deserve, report all crimes committed by them, they will go home or we will deport them) - LAW AND ORDER (enforcement first and foremost with the laws currently on the books) - SOCIAL SECURITY REFORM (reform a program that can’t sustain itself and will bankrupt this nation) - DEFEAT THE DEMOCRAT (any fool they put up) – TAX SIMPLIFICATION (choice for the tax payer) - WON’T PUT UP WITH CRAP FROM THE MSM (including stupid questions by moderators) - PING!

From your link...

“—On guns, he may have gotten himself in trouble, in an attempt to diffuse the flip-flop label, by standing by his support for the Brady Bill and the 1994 assault weapons ban. He even said he would have signed an extension of the assault weapons ban when it expired in 2004. He also employed the odd phrase “weapons of unusual lethality” to describe the type of guns he would ban.”

Romney also said he didn’t believe in jailing doctors who perform abortion. Just said they should lose their license and have to pay a fine.

I am only bringing this up, because some Romney Freeper a few weeks ago was blasting Thompson because he believed in state rights for abortion, and not sending abortionist to jail. Well Romney believes the same thing!

Statement by
Wanda Franz, Ph.D., President
National Right to Life
November 13, 2007
National Press Club

National Right to Life, the nation’s largest pro-life organization, representing pro-lifers in fifty state affiliates and more than 3,000 local chapters is proud to endorse former Senator Fred Thompson for President of the United States. Our endorsement is a testament to Senator Thompson’s long-standing pro-life record, his commitment to protecting unborn children, and our belief in his ability to win.

Fred Thompson has had a strong, consistent pro-life record throughout his political career. Thompson opposes abortion and believes the 1973, abortion-on-demand, Supreme Court decision was wrongly decided and must be reversed. During his eight years in the United States Senate, he always opposed the use of tax dollars to promote or pay for abortion and supported the many pro-life measures, such as parental notice and consent.

Thompson has also stated his opposition to the kind of stem cell research that requires killing human embryos, while supporting the kind of stem cell research that harms no one and is the only kind producing treatments and cures. Since announcing his candidacy in September, Fred Thompson has run second only to pro-abortion candidate Rudy Giuliani for the Republican nomination in the overwhelming majority of national polls. As pro-lifers throughout the nation begin to unite behind his candidacy, he will be well positioned to win the nomination and the presidency. Unlike endorsements by individuals, this endorsement was made by the representatives of state pro-life organizations from across America which are themselves comprised of local community chapters and grassroots activists.

Hum, let me see here, who do I go with on this one:

A.Dr. Wanda Franz PhD, PRESIDENT of National Right to Life, a crusader for the rights of the unborn who has dedicated her career to fighting abortion, along with the leaders and members of her 3000 chapters...

OR

B. Spiff and now it seems Redgirl...

Damn, it's a quandary indeed...

Why should Fred have spent the time to initiate any pro-life legislation when he knew it wasn’t going to be passed? He voted for the ban on Partial Birth Abortion, but that’s about as restrictive as the Senate was going to get. Why waste his, and every other Senator’s time? It may have made pro-lifers feel good, but that’s about how effective it would have been. From what I can tell, Fred’s not a panderer, and we won’t be spending his time on things that won’t have any effect at all, just to make a few more people think better of him.
