Clinton Library Got Funds From Abroad: Saudis Said to Have Given $10 Million
Washington Post ^ | Saturday, December 15, 2007 | By John Solomon and Jeffrey H. Birnbaum

Bill Clinton's presidential library raised more than 10 percent of the cost of its $165 million facility from foreign sources, with the most generous overseas donation coming from Saudi Arabia, according to interviews yesterday.

The royal family of Saudi Arabia gave the Clinton facility in Little Rock about $10 million, roughly the same amount it gave toward the presidential library of George H.W. Bush, according to people directly familiar with the contributions.

The presidential campaign of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) has for months faced questions about the source of the money for her husband's presidential library. During a September debate, moderator Tim Russert asked the senator whether her husband would release a donor list. Clinton said she was sure her husband would "be happy to consider that," though the former president later declined to provide a list of donors.

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) has made an issue of the large yet unidentified contributors to presidential libraries, saying that he wants to avoid even the appearance of impropriety in such donations. Obama has introduced legislation that would require disclosure of all contributions to presidential libraries, including Clinton's, and Congress has actively debated such a proposal. Unlike campaign donations, money given to presidential libraries is often done with limited or no disclosure.

The Clinton library has steadfastly declined to reveal its donors, saying they were promised confidentiality. The William J. Clinton Foundation, which funds the library, is considered a charity whose contributors can remain anonymous.

Hillary's girlfriend (oops, body-person), the Clinton library, the house across from Ft. Marcy Park--those Saudis just seem to be everywhere around the Clintons.

If a few of them flew planes into the Twin Towers you might think there was some sort of conspiracy or something.

:-)

You are correct it should not be legal.

What if more frightening is that a candidate for the office of President of the United States is so sleazy that she would gladly take bribes from any foreign nation.

Laws merely reflect a national understanding of morality. If the leaders are immoral it makes no difference what the laws are.

Remember the "Soviet constitution" under Stalin.

While the firing squad lined you up against the wall you could recite numerous passages of why that was illegal. It didn't help you one bit as the bullets ripped through your body.

Ultimately civilization depends on a consensus on morality, a consensus shared by political leadership.

Without it no laws can save us.

The authors of this story should also remember how much the Saudis gave to establish a pro-Islamic school called the King Fahd Center at the University of Arkansas

from the NY Times:

“As Governor of Arkansas, Mr. Clinton worked hard to secure a multimillion-dollar Saudi donation to a Middle Eastern studies program at the University of Arkansas, said Bernard Madison, the dean of the university’s Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences.

The discussions about the donation began in 1989. They involved Americans with ties to both the Saudis and Mr. Clinton; officials of Stephens Group Inc., the Arkansas business empire that has provided crucial financial assistance to Mr. Clinton; and David Edwards, an investment banker in Little Rock who has Saudi clients and is a friend of Mr. Clinton.

Mr. Clinton’s efforts included a 1991 meeting with Prince Bandar bin Sultan, the Saudi Ambassador, the dean said.

According to Mr. Madison, the Saudis did not give their first donation to the university — a $3.5 million gift — until last summer.

Mr. Madison said: “The gulf war intervened. It was put on hold. They didn’t have a lot of money.”

One week after he was elected President, Mr. Clinton discussed the donation as part of a telephone conversation he had with Saudi Arabia’s monarch, King Fahd, according to a spokesman for Mr. Clinton.

Another $20 million arrived in February, a few weeks after President Clinton’s inauguration, Mr. Madison said”

Hummmmmmmmm
