"Students who rely on all-nighters to bring up their grades might want to sleep on that strategy: A new survey says those who never study all night have slightly higher GPAs than those who do."

Did this study take into account at all, that the majority of students who felt they needed to stay up all night to prepare, probably weren’t the best students to begin with?

I think that’s the inference...and why this study is imbecilic.
All nighters are NOT for studying. All nighters are for finishing papers and projects that are due the next day, and that you should have gotten started on way earlier.
People who don't need to stay up all night "cramming" will do better than people who do.
Duh.
All nighters...that's what dating was...Then you showed up for work...and were pretty happy if you could keep your head up for 8 hours....and the smile off your face.
Here is the best way to take a test:
______________________________________________
Elaine: What did you get on your SAT’s?
George: It varies.
Jerry: You know, I don’t even know my IQ.
Elaine: Mine’s 145.
George: 145!
Jerry: Get out of here!
Elaine: You get out of here!
Jerry: You get out of here!
George: You should take the test for me.
Jerry: Well, that would be something, cheating on a IQ test. Hey, remember in college when you passed Lettick the test out the window? You became a legend after that.
George: Yeah, yeah I really had some guts back then. Why wouldn’t we do that again?
Elaine: What?
George: You could take the IQ test for me. I could pass it to you out the window.
Duh.
LOL
“You took the words right off of my fingers...

Duh.”
Honestly, I don’t think that ocurred to “assistant professor of psychology Pamela Thacher” or the AP reporter who wrote this.
lol
I can cite one exception to this whole thing. If you have been missing classes, or have not yet read the material, a last minute cram is definitely better than just winging it.
“All men are born equal”....Not

No doubt but the study is saying that person you’re referring to will have a lesser GPA than someone who is in class, studies and doesn’t have to cram.
Which is a huge “duh”
Not always. My son takes AP classes.Problem is that many teachers not teaching the classes and not competent. My son and his class have tests every day.He have to teach himself. His GPA is 4.3.

During undergrad, I pulled many all-nighters to complete assignments and projects that were due the next day. During medical school, however, every night was an all nighter it seemed. During my training, we had a saying: “Eat when you can, sleep when you can, and don’t *%@# with the pancreas!”
I was lucky enough to be a full time student and not have to work. I was spoiled during my freshman year......2.8 GPA
But the next year I became friends with some graduate students who seemed like they partied all the time and I learned their secret.
If you are able, you treat school like a full time job.... ie 8:00 to 5:00 every day. No class, head to the library and study, read your text book, re-write class notes, just nothing but school work. Come 5:00....party time. I tried it and it worked, even on days before major tests or finals, I’d be at the local pub till closing time.
Dean’s list from then on....graduated with a 3.7
