Bloomberg Seeks To Question Candidates About Guns

By GRACE RAUH Staff Reporter of the Sun December 10, 2007

Mayor Bloomberg is trying to force every presidential candidate to take a stand on guns.

A bipartisan coalition he co-founded with Mayor Thomas Menino of Boston, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, is asking all presidential candidates to complete a 16-question survey about restrictions on gun trace data, gun trafficking, federal enforcement of gun laws, and punishment levels for breaking gun laws.

The survey allows Mr. Bloomberg, seen as a potential presidential candidate who could jump into the race as a self-financed independent next year, to enhance his national profile and distinguish himself from other presidential candidates on gun policy.

The mayor has led a national fight against a gun law known as the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts access to information about guns used in crimes, and has drawn the ire of the National Rifle Association as he has called for a crackdown on illegal guns.

"Every day, 30 Americans are murdered with guns — that's a Virginia Tech-sized tragedy occurring every single day in America. The majority of those murders are committed with illegal guns by criminals who under existing laws never should have had access to those weapons in the first place," the coalition, which includes more than 250 mayors, wrote in an The coalition asked that the completed survey be turned in by January 2, the day before the Iowa caucus. It said the results would be shared with the public and would help mayors decide which candidate to endorse for president. The organization noted that it would not be making an endorsement of its own.

Mr. Bloomberg said in a statement that the coalition is committed to respecting the rights

Bloomie is at it again.

But this time he may actually help gun rights advocates if he somehow forces Rooty to reveal his true agenda for gun control if he makes it to the White House. Rudy was careful to say in SC that he "believes in" the 2nd Amendment, but back in NY he says that he thinks guns should be registered and licensed like cars. Somebody needs to give him a clue, cars aren't constitutionally protected the way guns are, and gun registration and licensing has inevitably led to gun confiscation in countless places where it was forced on gun owners, including Rooty's NYC where gun registration and licensing was allegedly introduced to help stop crime.

Bloomberg is an unindited felon who instigated a criminal conspiracy to violate federal gun laws prohibiting strawman sales of firearms to individuals otherwise prevented from purchasing arms.

Handled appropriately, this could be positive. To do so, the candidates must avoid the hidden assumptions in Bloomberg’s questionaire, such as:

Making even tougher restrictions on guns while criminals are already violating several gun laws will make a difference;

Guns, not criminals are the real problem;

Guns in the hands of normal citizens are a problem and not a solution;

and

Access to guns is not a Constitutionally protected right.

The candidates have no more obligation to answer his survey than they do one sent by Fidel Castro.

Toss it.

So criminals are getting guns in spite of the more than 20,000 federal, state, and local gun laws now on America's law books, but if we only pass a few more gun laws they won't be able to get them? Yeah that's the answer, pass some more useless, ineffective, unenforcible, and unconstitutional gun laws and crime will disappear.

These people aren't dumb enough to actually believe their own bravo sierra, they're much more interested in making it much harder and far more expensive for law abiding Americans to legally own guns of any type.

That survey would make an excellent target at the range.

Maybe the good mayor needs to ask the people at the Colorado church where Jeanne Assam saved countless lives with her gun!

They could toss it of course, but I think some of the far left Dem loonys like Kucinich may try to use it to make their arguments for passing European style gun laws seem a little less radical. I don't expect any Pub candidate to answer any of the questions, but I believe Rooty would like to see more restrictive gun laws passed even though he can't say so if he hopes to win the GOP nomination. He has been an outspoken opponent of gun owners and 2nd Amendment rights ever since he was a hotshot NY prosecutor, and I can't believe he could truthfully change his stripes now even if he knew it would improve his status with pro-gun voters in the GOP nomination race.

I don't trust Mitt on the issue either, but I don't think he would put passing more gun control laws on his to-do list if he became president. AFAIK all the other Pub candidates at least give lip service to the RKBA, but who knows what their real beliefs are on the issue. The only two who I fully believe in on the issue are Hunter and Fred, and the outlook isn't very promising now for either one. McCain used to be very good on the issue, but right after the Columbine tragedy he campaigned through several western states for stricter state gun control laws so I don't think his heart is really in it when he claims to support the RKBA.

I challenge ol' Bloomers to ask Duncan Hunter to his face about his stand on the 2nd Amendment...

From Duncan Hunter Core Principles

Second Amendment

It seems every election year, some liberal politician dons an NRA cap and grabs a shotgun for a hunting photo-op, as if that means they support our right as Americans to keep and bear arms. I, myself, thoroughly enjoy hunting, having just recently spent a great weekend hunting elk in Arizona. But, the Second Amendment is not about hunting. It is about the right of you and me to be secure in our homes. We must vigorously defend against all attempts to chip away at the Second Amendment. You know as well as I do that there is one thing criminals prefer over any other: unarmed victims.

Bloomie would probably like to see that gutsy lady disarmed and charged with a crime for possessing a deadly weapon on church property.

Never mind that she and her legally possessed firearm saved the lives of countless innocent people, in the eyes of Bloomie and his type she's an irresponsible, bloody-minded gun nut who gleefully took the life of a poor troubled man who was only trying to learn how to deal with his murderous urges to mow down heaps of innocent church goers and teenage girls.

amazing how this BS pops up after every wacko shooting.

The MSM is burying this story since a female private guard shot the psycho.

Democrats must thing gun control is a good issue.

The Supreme Court is going to rule on the 2nd Amendment before the political conventions take place next summer. Giuliani has stated that he agrees with the reasoning of the DC Court in the case that is on appeal. That’s the right position to take, in case there’s any confusion.

Even if he disagreed with it, this court decision is going to trump everything, including even a possible Hillary presidency.

“Even if he disagreed with it, this court decision is going to trump everything, including even a possible Hillary presidency.”

The Supremes read the newspapers. Todays events, where a woman with a private CCW saved dozens, if not hundreds, will not go unnoticed.

Neither will the on line USA Today polls that show 98-99 percent of the people willing to answer believe that the 2nd Amendment is about an *individual* right.

One of the questions must be: do you think in a free society that law can only do so much?

We could also ask: must a public official be honest when choosing his words? After all, politicians talk about banning “assault weapons”, that are not real assault weapons. They talk about banning “illegal” guns when they really mean all guns except those in the hands of police. They wax hyperbolic about “gun” crime, when they really mean criminals (many of which are felons who the law prohibits from even touching a gun) who use guns to commit crimes.

We could ask: just what does “shall not be infringed” mean?

I am sure Freepers could suggest their own questions.

We could ask when Bloomberg will request that the New York Legislature pass a bill to make New York a “shall issue” state, with statewide pre-emption, thus bringing and end to NYC’s capricious laws that are hostile to firearms ownership and CCW.

You just gotta love Duncan Hunter, and I do. But I'm sorry to say that I don't think he has a snowman's chance in July to win the nomination. I can't believe it's Hunter himself or his stands on the issues that is keeping him in the polltakers' cellar, it must be incompetent and/or inexperienced campaign advisors and staff members who are not getting the job done. I still hope and pray for a miracle that would boost him to the top of the heap, but it's getting closer to D-day all the time and his campaign, if you want to call it that, still isn't showing any new signs of life as far as I can see.

That's a crying shame too, I believe a good man who would do the right things for the US is being shut out due to very poor campaigning and a hostile media. And it's not just the left wing of the MSM that's hostile, supposedly conservative media corporations such as FoxNews, some talk show hosts, and the very few right-leaning newspapers don't seem to want to even acknowledge that Hunter is in the race except for occasionally mentioning that he's near the bottom of the poll numbers.

Given that sad situation, I'm now backing Fred who I believe after Hunter is the next best candidate who has at least some chance of being nominated, even though I admit that it doesn't look any too good for him at this point. If all the backers of candidates who show no signs of being able to win would get behind one man such as Fred we might be able to save the White House next November for the good of all Americans.

My worst fear is that Rooty will be nominated. For if that's the case I won't vote for him or the Democrat, and I hate to break my five decade record of voting for the entire slate of Republican candidates in every national election since the 1958 Florida Senatorial race. Everybody tells me that I have to vote for Rooty if he's nominated or else I'll rot in hell along with President Hillary. But I can't do that without breaking a solemnly sworn vow taken before man and Almighty God to never again vote for a pro-abort, pro-"gay rights", anti-2nd Amendment Rino candidate for even the lowest elective office in government, much less for the highest.
