OK< they are all up now. Giuliani got the biggest applause (of course this is in Florida). Hunter got quite an applause, too. Interesting. It was rather quiet for Huckabee it seemed.

Giuliani kicked it off. THe English translation of the question was not clear (volume wise) but he seemed to get the question anyways in Spanish and answered in English. It looks like they fixed the sound volume. Mitt on his answer now.

The only one not showing up for the mexican debate is...
TOM TANCREDO
I guess I know who I'm voting for.

The data has been in for some time;
Total immersion is the quickest way to learn a new language.
All delays in learning the native language impair the individuals learning and earning ability.
This debate is patronizing and pitiful!

I agree. People need to be weaned off their sole language when they immigrate, and get into English ASAP. It can be done!! ;-)

Hunter talking about REAGAN as the center of the party of the Republicans, of liberating people with free market economies. Hunter just now got a rousing, sustained applause. The strongest applause so far for any of them. A bit surprising. I thought they would boo him since he is the strongest on illegal immigration on the stage..

Ron Paul got a strong round just now, too. McCain getting a strong applause on some issue. I think the crowd so far is being polite to most if not all of them. Wait till we get into illegal immigration, though, I think it will heat up.

This is not airing on the local Univision outlet in Los Angeles. No bias there.

This “debate” is proof enough that this country is heading in the wrong direction. Imagine, a Presidential debate that is being held in Spanish. I nver thought I would see such a thing in my 64 years in this country. By 2050 one in four residents of the US will be Hispanic and non-Hispanic whites will be 50% of the population down from 90% in 1970. Demography is destiny.

They should be questioned about it.
I would imagine the TV crowd there are including a of Cubans, whom as we know, are fiercly anti communist and not necessarily in favor of hordes of leftist-inclined Mexicans coming into the USA illegally.

Question is up on if English should be official language. McCain is on it.
He (seemed to say) it is necessary or imperative for people to know English if they are here, and use it to function in the USA effectively, and he got a big round of applause for it.

Small percentage of Cubans here, AFAIK.
The Latinos here are overwhelmingly Mexican, followed by Guatemalan, Salvadoran and Nicaraguan.
So why do the Republicans even bother to do this when they are being blacked out of the market? Is it airing anywhere live or just on the ‘net?
To: Nea Wood
Are they going to do a debate in Chinese too? or German? or Italian? How about esparanto? It’s just another political deal in an attempt to win a few votes.
To: La Enchiladita
I meant the crowd in Florida present in the auditorium for the live debate. I am wondering if many are Cuban Americans or not. The rounds of applause on certain things said are kind of surprising me. I know in terms of latinos in the US, yes, overwhelmingly Mexican and Central American. But at the debate itself, who is there? When I think of Florida I think of Cubans.

That is different than making English the OFFICIAL language.
