Boy's mauling death, other human-bear encounters brings call for more hunting permits
The Salt Lake Tribune ^ | 12/07/2007 | Patty Henetz

Bears that barge in on people in the forest have become enough of a nuisance that more of them should be hunted, state wildlife managers have decided.

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, responding to a spike in human-bear contacts and an 11-year-old boy's death in June, want to issue 296 black bear hunting permits for Utah's 2008 spring and fall hunts, a 20 percent increase from the 248 permits offered this year.

DWR officials say the state's black bear population is high enough to warrant the permit increase. Wildlife managers also say bears and humans clashed too many times in 2007 not to take some kind of action in areas where the worst damage occurred.

The Division of Wildlife Resources this year recorded 202 bear incidents - that is, bear encounters that pose a potential threat to public safety. That's nearly double the total from the previous three years combined.

But wildlife advocates and bear biology experts ...

When are they ever? Ban all bear hunting and they'll just move on to the next aggrieved class of plant, animal, offended human, or those that should be offended but are just too stupid to know it, i.e. you and I.

Correct. The PETAphile mantra that “A rat is a dog is a pig is a boy” means all are fair food for predators like bears. /heavy sarc

Liberals will not be happy, but Steven Colbert will be. He always list as his number 1 threat to America: BEARS!!!

But, of course, Steven Colbert is closer to being America’s bigger threat than are BEARS!!!!

How ‘bout stay out of Bear country?

Like people who swim in waters patroled by sharks then whine when they get bit.

I never understood camping and hiking deep in the woods.

Let’s see Las Vegas or a forest , hmmmm.....

Let’s see, beautiful beaches of barbados or a forest, hmm...

We have a growing bear problem in our neck of the woods, too. To compound it, the bleeding hearts will set food out for them.

Bear Kills 93 Year-Old New Mexico Woman

By Joe Garner
Scripps Howard News Service
August 21, 2001

The 100-pound elderly woman didn’t have a chance against a 275-pound bear in the kitchen of her home...

A 93-year-old New Mexico woman was mauled to death by a black bear that broke into her home over the weekend, stunned wildlife officials have confirmed.

Adelia Maestas Trujillo of Cleveland, in north-central New Mexico, was killed “by multiple bite injuries,” said Scott Wilson, associate director of the Office of Medical Investigator.…

Bear Mauls and Kills Infant in New York State

Associated Press
August 19, 2002

A bear killed an infant Monday afternoon as it tried to drag the girl into the woods, officials said. The baby, Ester Schwimmer of Brooklyn, was snatched out of her stroller by the bear at the bungalow colony, police said. Fallsburg is about 70 miles northwest of New York City.

Isaac Abraham, a community leader from Williamsburg in Brooklyn, said witnesses told him the 5-month-old girl was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital upon arrival.

The baby was in a stroller in front of the porch with members of her family, said Mike Fraser, a state Department of Environmental Conservation spokesman.

The bear grabbed the stroller and the child, Fraser said. The child was knocked out of the stroller and the bear tried to drag her into the woods...

Agreed. I never understood P&W sending in park visitors without allowing them any means of protection. Oh, pardon me, they are allowed a whistle.

Of course, there is that old joke about How to Identify Bear Scat: Brown bear scat contains leaves and bits of berries. Grizzly bear scat contains whistles.

City liberals who know nothing of rural life support ‘vacating’ public allotments for grazing...

and eliminating hunting seasons and historical hunting practices...

Now, they wonder why the bear population are way up and breaking into homes.

Las Vegas? Are you kidding? There is nothing that compares to being deep in the wilderness. Nothing. That said, leaving bait piles, I’m sorry, small children, in tents alone is foolish. I enjoy exploring the deep dark woods but ALWAYS carry a large caliber firearm.

‘Liberals will not be happy. ‘

Indeed, for no other reason than ‘the children are for the bears!’ doesn’t quite sing as well.

“Oh, pardon me, they are allowed a whistle.”

With some of the circumstances people posted to me, I am referring to those who venture out and get attacked.

You need to make LOUD noise. Convince the bear you are not worth eating.

If you are going to shoot it, I recommend at a good distance, if it falls on you, even dead you are done.
Bears have muscle in the “hump” on their back. Grizzlys can move 600-700 boulders with one arm.
I saw one push up a 700lb dumpster.
People need to realize that they exist too. As we expand as a species, we force other creatures to deeper into their territory that cannot fit the species.
I would never go near bear country or live there,
if I had to,
I want a gun that is gonna stop it in its tracks.
