Recommended Charitable Organizations to Donate Money to (vanity)
Nevadan

Posted on 11/21/2007 8:36:39 AM PST by Nevadan

This year we have decided to give our kids an early Christmas gift. We will be taking $25 of the amount we have set aside for each of them for Christmas gifts and giving it to them on Thanksgiving Day. Along with the money will be a list of different charities. They will get to select a charity to donate the money to. Our kids have big hearts already, but we think this will be a good reminder to them of all they have to be thankful for while giving them an opportunity to bless the lives of others.

There are so many worthy organizations that do such good works with the donations given to them from charities dealing with world hunger, medical needs, military families, to faith based organizations. I would like to compile a list to present to our children. What groups do you Freepers out there recommend? If you have a website link to include, that would be great!

We bought a llama and some beehives through Heifer International.

This might be to much of a downer for your kids, but if you have a non profit hospice house that serves all regardless of their ability to pay for the service, that would be a good place to donate to.

My favorite is Make a Wish.

It is a healing salve to the torture and hopelessness of the human spirit in dying children.

How about the Republican candidate of your choice?

Not tax deductible, but a conservative in the White House will save more lives and do more good than almost any charity. Or your local church.

My church gets 10% already, so

Fred08.com

would be my choice.

Salvation Army or food to local food banks.

Also, it’s cold out side for the bell ringers too. Make sure they are warm and fed too.

Lutheran World Relief is one of the best I've found. Over 92% of their funds go to their charitable works.

Here's a link to Charity Navigator's Rating of them. This is a good site to evaluate charities.

They are always quick to respond to world disasters, such as the cyclone in Bangladesh.

Mrs. Tick and I are looking for worthy charities, as well — thanks for starting this thread.

In particular we’d like to find some good ones that help out our military folks.

SandRat posted yesterday regarding a group that builds housing for disabled soldiers. That one looks pretty good:

Any advice y’all have on others would be greatly appreciated.

Happy Thanksgiving to all. We have SO much to be thankful for!

Saint Vincent De Paul society. They help everyone and now have a pharmacy for those who can’t afford their medication.

I like the Heifer project! It encourages entrepreneurism! One year the kids bought a "llama for Mama"; I loved it! That same year we bought some rabbits and goats in MY Mama's name, then sent her the little cardboard card/ornament describing the gift. She liked it, too!

It's actually a great way for teenagers to give gifts to their friends. It's a nice gesture and helps someone in need in the process. The kids have got enough junk anyway. ;o)

They have been helping a little Iraqi boy who was doused with gasoline and set on fire by random crazies. CNN has chronicled the families story and are very moving. Unfortunately, they usually stick the typical CNN bias in the stories, but at least they have brought attention to this brave family.

George Costanza’s “People Fund”. On a more serious note, Make a Wish, Salvation Army, Saint Vincent de Paul-— all sound like worthy charities.

The Boy Scouts of America. Give directly to your local council...not through the United Way!

The VFW has 3 good ones- Military Assistance Program (MAP), Operation Uplink (phone cards), and Unmet Needs (grants for military folks having a hard time financially).
