Don't answer Census, don't face going to jail (250,000 forms are being mailed out)

Don't answer Census, don't face going to jail
Government demands answers, but official confirms penalties not applied

Another month is coming, and another 250,000 forms are being mailed out in the U.S. Census Bureau's perpetual American Community Survey, which demands responses to personal questions about a family's lifestyle, housing accommodations, work schedules, physical and mental disabilities, income and the like.

That means roughly 250,000 times recipients will see the warning that participation is required by law, and there are penalties including fines for not answering each question. But, in fact, U.S. Census Bureau officials say they've never had anyone prosecuted for refusing to provide those intimate details to the government.

"The Census Bureau has never prosecuted anybody," spokesman Clyve Richmond told WND. "We try to work with people and explain how useful the information is."

As WND has reported, the U.S. Census Bureau switched from the surveys once every 10 years, called for in the U.S. Constitution, to annual surveys sent to three million households, to keep the government's data more up-to-date.

The issue arises periodically about the invasion into a family's privacy by the questions, including:

Does this house, apartment, or mobile home have COMPLETE plumbing facilities; that is, 1) hot and cold piped water, 2) a flush toilet, and 3) a bathtub or shower?

At any time DURING THE PAST 12 MONTHS, did anyone in this household receive food stamps? If so, how much?

Do you have a mortgage and if so, how much is it?

Because of a physical, mental, or emotional condition does this person have any difficulty in doing any of the following: learning, dressing, bathing or getting around?

Has this person given birth in the last year?

I never sent in the mailed census forms I received last time. The lady census taker tried to reach me by phone, but I didn’t call back. She came by a couple times and finally I answered the door as I took pity on how hard she was working and probably not getting paid anything extra to work so hard.

I told her I would only answer the question concerning the number in the household as I thought that was all the Constitution gave the government the right to know. She looked rather crestfallen so I did answer one other question...that being that I was not a Native American.

See, I am a conservative who can make compromises.

I was sent the long form version during the last census and almost burst a blood vessel. I shredded it. They came to my house. Twice. I told them I would answer the first several questions that were required under the US Constitution but that the rest of it wasn’t the government’s business.

They told me that they would have to keep coming back to my house until I filled it out. That was okay with me. I went to the library, got a copy of the short form census, filled it out and mailed it back. The next time they came ringing my doorbell I told them what I did. They said they had no record of the census and I told them that wasn’t my problem.

I suspect the reason no one has been prosecuted is because it wouldn’t stand up in court. They have overstepped what is allowed under the constitution.

Genealogy is one of my hobbies and census information is invaluable when you are putting together a family history. While it may be interesting to know some of this information answering any more than the basic questions provided for in the Constitution should be voluntary.

In fact it seems at least one branch of my family regularly must not have been home when the census man came a callin’. Frustrating for me but I suspect they were rather free spirited and didn’t take a shine to the government stickin’ it’s nose in their business.

Census-Taker: You got a bobcat in there?

Mr. Leonard: Well, I have a permit. [ reaches into apartment and pulls out a sheet of paper ] Here you go.

Census-Taker: [ examines paper ] This is a permit to run a nail salon.

.
Bobcats need a nail salon.

Right now I'm doing heavy research into my family's genealogy and the census records are invaluable.

What do I need to do a good job? Names, maiden names, places of birth, address and ages. That is all. Yes, it's cool to find out that one of my grandfather's was a painter in New York, but I can dig up those details on my own. The gov't doesn't need that information.

Yup. I feel as offended by the gov't asking me how much is on my mortgage as I would being asked the same question at a PTA meeting. And the fellow in the article is right: They are the GOVERNMENT. Shouldn't they have most of this information already?

I had the same experience in the late 80s or early 90s. I don’t remember the year.

And on the real Census, the only question I answer is how many people live at this address.

When you think about, just think what Shrillary could do with that census form...Have it sent to a few hundred of her ‘enemies’ who fill it out and send it back...Then that plus an IRS Audit and she and her shadow can squeeze the life out of anybody they wish...

Name John Moe
Income would like some...$ 4000 in a good year
Bathroom ?...Yes—outhouse mostly
bedrooms? yeah when i ain’t sleeping in the camper
wife? once’t long time ago...now it’s sweetums
children? um. only went to 4th grade, can’t count higher’n 10

I’ve been trying to do research, via the U.S. government census, about my paternal grandfather’s family. Like “who they really are?”

On the 1920 census he said he was born in Kansas (it was actually East St. Louis) and that his parents came from New Jersey (they didn’t!). But there are no records as to that fact. His mother was supposedly born in Memphis, TN, but there is no record and seems to have come from nowhere, though we know her family emigrated from Switzerland, and 6 brothers with her family’s name landed in New Orleans back in the 1840’s. Evidently lying on the census isn’t something new!

If the government “doesn’t need to know” Mkebulele, or Jose or Ford Prefect, or Achmed, or Vasili, or Won Hung Lo are in the country illegally, then they don’t “need to know” anything about me, other than how many of me there are.

Me and the census taker year for year 2000[?]

I live in the boonies. I had been receiving these forms from the CB in the mail, which I trashed. One day an old, 70+ appears in my 300’ beyond my “no trespass” signs, dirt driveway near the house. I go out he announces he is from the CB and asks questions I give him very few answers, name, rank SN. He asks form my phone number because they audit his job performance and might call. At that time of my life I was more stupid than I am now, and I gave it to him. Months later I get these calls from an 800# asking the questions I refused to answer from the old guy. I hung up on all, then I get letters, answer or else. Weeks after I notice two tree limbs parallel across my drive, I remove them. Notice old silver AMC parked half mile form my drive. I go back home. Next day take the dog for a walk, same two tree limbs across my drive in the same spot. While walking the dog the silver AMC pulls up, guy demands to know if I live where the drive is. I demand who the F*** are you? He is from the govt’t CB. He starts in, my dog is about take him apart, my jacket just happened to open Hee Hee, the CB guy spots my Glock and leaves.

Whenever I fill out any survey I always give myself a masters degree instead of high school, take 20 years off my age and increase my income by 10 times what it actually is.

Have researched my father's family and traced them back to 1638 when they came here from Ireland. First generation here started changing spelling of their last names.

Traced a great grandmothers parents to Illinois. Census said his parents were from Ohio and after that can find nothing on them at all.

Did find a 'deserter' from the Union army way back there. Seems he just got tired of fighting and went home.

I’m sitting here reading my year 2000 cencus, the long form. When I got to the part about how many toilets I own, I just couldn’t fill it out.

My co-workers just cracked up when I told them they government mailed me the long form. LOL! This survey is the most worthless and invasive piece of trash I have ever recieved. I have added it to my collection of stupid sh**.

Last census, I refused entry to the Census taker, told him our house contained two of the human race and that he was to leave my property immediately, and would be charged with trespass if he returned. He was super snotty and threatened me, but did leave, threatening to tell his superior. I later saw his superior elsewhere and she confided confidentially, she was happy I did what I did.

Hey, it worked.

"...She's become very disgusted at how many illegals she's found (at least "suspected") when she goes to some houses..."

Directly after my military service, I needed a quick part-time job, and took one with the Census Bureau. They needed bodies to follow up on all the non-respondants. (Under Director George Hay Brown).

With all the skills of a 25-year-old, I telephoned repeatedly, visited repeatedly, got a great tan, lost 15 pounds, and appeared at a final meeting with my somewhat-disappointing results in hand.

At the meeting, I asked a NY-transplant colleague—with a neighboring territory—how many people he'd gotten. (I'd done about 80% of about three thousand, and felt very disappointed in myself.) He said, "I got all of them".

I realized—from the persistence of his hospital pallor—that he'd never left home!

By my later analysis of all those unaswered doorbells in Miami, the missing respondants were 99% Illegals. (And this was in 1970!)

I also had a stint with the Census Bureau out of the Dallas office in my younger days to follow up on hard-core non-responses. They sent me out to rural Arkansas--where I met very friendly black people who apparently had never seen a white person. The little kids would run up to me and stare at me like I was ET or something.
