Should Hillary Pretend to Be a Flight Attendant? (MoDowd Alert)
NY Times ^ | Nov. 16, 2007 | Maureen Dowd

Posted on 11/16/2007 5:11:57 AM PST by jdm

In 2005, a year after Ellie Grossman, a doctor, met Ray Fisman, a professor, on a blind date, she was talking to her grandmother about her guy.

“Never let a man think you’re smarter,” her grandmother advised. “Men don’t like that.”

Ray and Ellie “had a good laugh, thinking times had changed,” he recalled. The pair went on to marry — after she proposed.

But now, he says, “it seems like the students at Columbia University should pay heed to Grandma Lil’s advice.”

Mr. Fisman is a 36-year-old Columbia economics professor who conducted a two-year study, published last year, on dating. With two psychologists and another economist, he ran a speed-dating experiment at a local bar near the Columbia campus.

The results surprised him and made him a little sad because he found that even in the 21st century, many men are still straitjacketed in stereotypes.

“I guess I had hoped that they had evolved beyond this,” he said in a phone interview. “It’s like that ‘Sex and the City’ episode where Miranda went speed-dating. When she says she’s a lawyer, guys lose interest. Then she tells them she’s a flight attendant and that plays into their deepest fantasies.”

All joking aside, I do wonder why Hillary hasn't had any liposuction and other cosmetic surgery? It's a little late now, but it probably would have helped in the vote.

Hillary likes the kitchen? Yeah, heard that last night. What happened to the “I’m not making cookies” spin? Tat line isn’t working this time around, Hil? Oh, right, it didn’t go over well the first time. But it’s such a classic!

Here's a Columbia prof doing research at a local bar and comparing his results to events in Sex and the City. Yeah, that's hard science!

On those extremely rare occasions that I read Maureen Dowd or Ellen Goodman, they frequently reference “Sex and the City”. Not the Federalist Papers, the Constitution, or John Locke, but “Sex and the City”. These articles say much more about the author than about the subject.

Yes. For a guy, the only thing worse than marrying a lawyer is divorcing one. No thanks.

The the speed dating “survey” was flawed. The choices were between stewardess and lawyer. There are plenty of dimbulb lawyers out there. More importantly, people DON’T LIKE LAWYERS. If she were a pediatrician, or a Russian language professor, and that was compared with being a constriction worker (you know the quota gals that hold the slow sign on the highways), the results would have been quite different.

I don’t even believe in Darwinian evolution, but Dowd shows a profoiund misunderstanding of the system. Evolution theory (and common sense) basically says that women who make more babies make more women similar to themselves. Men who do things that make babies (e.g. marry or tryst with women of childbearing age who are less likely to be poisoning their bodies against conception) will also sire more children like themselves.

Feminists, homosexuals and communists are like viruses—they don’t normally generate much on their own, so they have to infect a healthy host through the media, popular culture and schools.

P.S. My wife scored higher on the SAT than I did, didn’t scare me off one bit. (At least I outscored her on the math!)

Personally, I think this statement says much more about the guy that did the study than it does anything about society at large, and men in particular.

And I’ll also note this sure is a great excuse for Mo Dowd being a surgically enhanced spinster.

Hey Mr.Fisman, and you also Ms Dowd if your listening.

Men look at women and and only want one thing and who cares what women want!
