Coffee 'reduces the risk of skin cancer'

Drinking coffee can cut the risk of skin cancer by more than a third, scientists say.

A good healthy dose: scientists believe caffeine could stop skin cancers spreading
Researchers found that people who drank more than six cups of caffeinated coffee a day reduced their chances of developing the most common form of skin cancer by 35 per cent, while those who drank two or three cups were 12 per cent less likely to have the disease.
Scientists believe caffeine could stop skin cancers spreading by stopping cells dividing, or by acting as an antioxidant.
Cases of skin cancer have quadrupled for men and tripled for women over the past 25 years in Britain, partly because of the increase in holidays in the sun.
Around 75,000 cases of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC), the milder form of the disease, are diagnosed each year. Dr Ernest Abel, whose study was published in the European Journal of Cancer Prevention, said: "The decreased prevalence in non-melanoma skin cancer associated with daily consumption of caffeinated coffee was dose-related and consistent with other studies.
"Among the possible explanations for caffeine's protective effect on NMSC are an antioxidant effect and/or inhibition of DNA synthesis and cell division."
Dr Abel, of Wayne State University, Detroit, and colleagues compared rates of NMSC among more than 77,300 white women aged 50 and over. They excluded women of other ethnic origins as they reported much lower rates of the disease.
The researchers said the findings should apply equally to men and women of all ages. Drinking decaffeinated coffee had no effect on participants' chances of developing skin cancer.

Taster's Choice?
how ‘bout the benefits of beer? i’m waiting for a study.
it will also help you get “bad word for ‘datin’ “
Coffee enema, LOL.
Sweet Jesus, who drinks **six** cups of coffee a day?! Do these people sleep? Ever?
Six cups of coffee?? A day?? I’d never get to sleep. Yikes!!
So does beer. You get skin cancer outside, under the blinding rays of the Texas sun, not inside, in a cool, scantly illuminated, bar, sipping a good beer.
I drink 4 cups of coffee and then 4 beers, just so they can fight it out.
If that is true, then the conclusion of this study is completely bogus
Decaffeinated coffee still has caffeine in it, just not as much as regular joe
You won’t get skin cancer, but you’ll die from a massive heart attack.
I’d still not get to sleep. I can’t even have a lipton tea after 12:00 noon, or I just won’t get to sleep.
And then I would gain way too much weight. No, not for me.
Hah. Just a virgin when it comes to the number of cups per day
I do not believe a word of this.
6 cups a day in the NW is not uncommon.
But has preference for duct tape.
I can drink an eight cup pot myself by about 10:30 am. then switch to diet Pepsi for the rest of the day. I must have a high caffienne tolerance...as sleeping is no problem :)
If they are talking 8 ounce cups, I would say I drink maybe 8 cups.
Also, I drink it all day and don’t do decaf.
And I sleep like a baby. My wife is jealous of that. Speshully since I’m 53 and shouldn’t.
Well, not every day, but sometimes. At least 4 though.
I start drinking coffee when I wake up.....drink it all day right up until I go to sleep. No problems what-so-ever...! Different strokes for different folks, I guess..
The skin cancer "trifecta" was not stopped by megadose caffeine in this case!
I noticed yourself and other posters mentioned high daily caffeine consumption with no sleep problems. Which makes me happy.
Because I drink coffee like a fool all day, and if not coffee, then Diet coke.
I can drink a great big ole cup of joe and lay down and sleep like a baby.
Maybe it’s hereditary. My parents were huge coffee drinkers. My Dad used to drink coffee while eating steamed crabs!
We all consumed caffeine and slept soundly.
A study brought to you by your friends at Starbucks!
Tasters Choice. That’s not real coffee!
Is that Harry Potter?
Other than that, I don't have any talents cept stayin alive..!

With this red hair of mine, its good that I drink at least 2 pots a day.
“how bout the benefits of beer? im waiting for a study.”
I’ve found that after 6 or so, that I am suddenly sexy, handsome, intelligent, confident, and witty.
I think it’s hereditary, the ability to sleep after drinking coffee all day.
Heck, I get a triple shot mocha latte (3 shots of espresso) from Panera just to get my heart started in the morning. ;-D
Well, that explains it. I drink my coffee strong and in copious amounts. Since I was a Lifeguard in my youth I should, by all accounts, be long dead of skin cancer. So, all you Lifeguards out there: go get another cup of Joe, or since you are of a younger generation, a Red Bull.
“Have been drinking 4 to 6 cups a day (black high octane- no sugar) since I was in my teens. Had my first (of over 20) basal cell lesions carved off in 1981. Squamous cell removed by Moh’s surgery in 1990. Melanoma survivor since 2004.- Wide local excision, lymph node biopsy, interferon.
The skin cancer “trifecta” was not stopped by megadose caffeine in this case!”
..................................
Wow. But who knows how many more lesions you would have had without drinking all that coffee?
Seriously, I pray you are past the worst of that and enjoy many cancer free years in the future.
I don't drink coffee at all! LOL!
Doesn’t everyone drink at least 6 cups?
I drink two twelve cup pots a day. I’m not kidding.
Black no sugar.
The secret is to like weak coffee. I like Iced coffee too.
I think I remember reading on these very pages that two cups a day prevent gallstones, and now on another thread, that it helps prevent Type II diabetes.
LOL! If it were just discovered, it would probably be classified as a drug, and be illegal.
Best news I’ve heard in a long time.
The girl in the pic isn’t drinking coffee—she’s drinking coffee flavored crap.
Black and unsweetened is the only way. (IMHO)
That is a crap study. I’ve been a six cup a day drinker since my Air Force days and have had two bouts with skin cancer. Recent studies have found that most studies (70% +) are full of errors, because they rush them out before they should be presented.
Do these people sleep? Ever?
Just 'bout 5-6 hours every night.
I think you've hit on it. These people are so hyper they can't lay in the sun for more than 10 minutes, then they have to go do something else.
My aunt was having strange heart palpitations and the doc asked how much coffee she drank. She counted them out and it came out to 10-12 cups a day.
The study doesn't say it prevents skin cancer. It says it cuts the risk by 1/3. That could either mean that fewer people get cancer or people who do get less lesions, not that you won't get cancer at all.
LOL!!!
