Sar-ron Beverly knew about nooses from family stories and historical photos. But he never understood their power until he walked into his boss' Fairfield office one day and saw one hanging from the ceiling, in front of a bookshelf and a family portrait.
"It was just too much," said Beverly, 30. "I'm from Mississippi. My grandparents moved to California to get away from this stuff.
"A hangman's noose shows the ultimate hatred for African Americans."
Since a noose hanging in a schoolyard triggered a civil rights firestorm this summer in Jena, La., there's been a resurgence of nooses across the United States. They've been found in a post office, in a hospital, on a professor's door, in a Coast Guard cadet's bag, in a fire station and on a bronze sculpture of the late rapper Tupac Shakur.
Historians and academics are examining why the noose is resurfacing and trying to explain its current cultural significance. Some say the symbol will always represent hate and proves that racism still exists in America. Others say the nooses are meaningless pranks.
Whatever the case, the fear and anger that a noose incites among African Americans are real.
Between 1882 and 1968, there were a documented 4,743 lynchings in the United States, and most victims were black men. Victims were usually beaten and hanged, often in public squares. White families would watch and take photos. No one was ever convicted of murder in connection with any of the deaths.
"Many white people are unaware of the incredible power of the lynching story for African Americans," said Sherrilyn Ifill, a professor of law at the University of Maryland and a former civil rights attorney. "Lynching was a message crime. It served to tell the black community that there were boundaries.

A noose ønce bit my sister...
We all know that whitey never got his neck stretched on boot hill.
‘Between 1882 and 1968, there were a documented 4,743 lynchings in the United States, and most victims were black men’
Most meaning roughly 65%.
I would bet you dollars to donuts that 99 out of 100 of these stupid things are being hung by racial hucksters looking to stir up trouble.
There are rock hard stupid racist idiot white folk out there, it cannot be denied, but there not so very many of them.
So what. Every time I see some hippie with a Che t-shirt on I don’t fall down crying, even though communism killed something close to 80 million people in the last hundred years. Lynching was bad, and I won’t make light of the deaths of innocent persons, but it just isn’t the worst thing to happen in all of human history. And I won’t be emotionally manipulated by anyone. Grrrrr.
OK. No white people were ever hanged.
I wonder if these same people are bothered by gang colors.
I thought it was... voting Democrat
Z-z-z-z.
Double-knotting my shoelaces brings back horrible childhood memories.
And then there’s small potatoes. Reminds me of why my great-grandparents came here from Ireland. Oh the humanity!
In 2005 there were 6700 Black men murdered. Of those, 6200 were murdered by other Black men.
Just to keep things in perspective.

All the noose that’s fit to print...
But, this is just a way to get congress amped up to pass hate crime legislation. The new version will include nooses or nooselike objects, no doubt, but the goal is speech codes for us all.
“Many white people are unaware of the incredible power of the lynching story for African Americans,”
Please. African Americans are so far removed from that today. I think it has almost zero impact.
Let’s try a little bit of wisdom from my mother: “They are doing it for attention, and to bother you, if you ignore them, they’ll stop.”
Can anybody say “red herring”?
Addendum: can a 24 hour noose channel be far behind?
Give me the whites killed by blacks in just that year.
Then give me all the whites killed by blacks since say the Great Society farce started.
Then compared that number to all the lynchings.
That is the real perspective.
They owe me.
Without that predilection for crime, I would have very little fear of it in my life. Just try living in the South, it’s part of life. Too many young black men are plain dangerous and no conscience. Two just murdered some young folks at a Bellacino’s painfully close to me over the weekend for pocket change ...even knew who they executed on their knees. hate crime?...would be in the reverse I can asssure you. And it is no one’s fault but there’s yet we get blamed for it.
And fixate on a handful of nooses to nowhere.
Ridiculous.
There is a fellow in Australia who has the numbers for the comparison I mentioned. It’s amazing.
When Islamo nuts cut off heads, it reminds me of the guillotine and gives me nightmares.
Old cowboy movies showed lynchings, and most of those lynched were not black.
Then YOU aren't from MS, moron.
"Many white people are unaware of the incredible power of the lynching story for African Americans," said Sherrilyn Ifill, a professor of law at the University of Maryland and a former civil rights attorney. "Lynching was a message crime. It served to tell the black community that there were boundaries. Don't get too educated. Don't vote. Don't get too wealthy. Don't look at a white woman."
Was that what the "message" to the thousands of whites who were lynched in this country as well?
"Since a noose hanging in a schoolyard triggered a civil rights firestorm this summer in Jena,..."
Liar. It did no such thing. Nobody even heard of it until the thugs who beat a kid in an unrelated incident got locked up.
"Few African Americans have grown up in households where there aren't discussions about racism and recollections of when lynching was a reality, said Patricia Turner, a faculty member in the African American studies department at UC Davis."
Don't want the kids growing up without a deep-seeded hatred of whitey, now do we?
"Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, a civil rights law firm in Montgomery, Ala., says the recent increase in noose incidents is a result of publicity from the Jena Six case, in which six black teens are accused of beating a white student after a noose was hung on a tree at their school."
Gotta keep repeating the LIE.
"No one was arrested for hanging the noose. The six black students were arrested in connection with the beating."
Jeez! One is against the law, the other ISN'T.
"Beverly walked off his work site that day. He and others left notes saying, "I am requesting an immediate leave of absence due to the noose hanging in the office of Richard Buikema, as discovered this morning. The racial overture makes me feel uncomfortable and unsafe."
Show me the MONEY!!
This is pathetic. The open bed of lies and hatred of whites in this article is frightening.
