Niagara Falls a Canadian Landmark? Not in New U.S. Video
AP - Fox News ^ | October 28, 2007

The Bush administration appears to have annexed a major Canadian landmark as part of a slick new campaign to promote U.S. tourism and welcome foreign visitors to America...

About four minutes into the seven-minute production, viewers are treated to the impressive sight and sound of water roaring over Niagara Falls before the screen shifts to the Lincoln Memorial.

In showing the natural wonder, Disney's filmmakers, however, chose the Horseshoe Falls, the only one of Niagara's three waterfalls to lie almost entirely on the Canadian side of the border...

I believe the original boundary split the Horseshoe Falls almost exactly in two. I do have the original description from the Treaty of Ghent and a VERY old map. Regardless, the Horseshoe has always been the dominant depiction of Niagara Falls.

My understanding is that the falls are slowly moving because they kind of wear-out and crumble away (no doubt due to global warming /s). So one way or another someone is going to end up with it.

If you had to rate which side of Niagara Falls was more beautiful...it's no contest. The Canadian side wins in a rout.

Crossing the Peace Bridge into Canada from Buffalo and the driving along the Niagara River is also more scenic..compared to driving over Grand Island, NY to get there.

Also, he said the video leaves out the two cascades that actually are on U.S. territory, the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls.

I learned something today. that third smaller waterfall is called the bridal veil falls I never knew that. i thought it was just part of the American falls.

Almost? So if it isnt entireley on the Canadian side, and it isnt the US, what country is the rest of it in? Whaaa....? It's in the US? But that would mean this is a non-story!

“I believe the original boundary split the Horseshoe Falls almost exactly in two.”

Even if it was, the story within the story is that an honest mistake seems to have been made in the production of the film and the AP is trotting out this lame piece of “Bush’s fault” as though it’s readership is stupid enough to think that the US is taking over Canada.

What will they do with themselves when 43 finally leaves office?

If this were true, Canada would have already declared war, surrendered, and been rebuilt by the U.S. taxpayer.

I've been on both sides of the Falls. The best view is on the Canadian side.

One of the first descriptions of the falls was written by Andrew Ellicott, a surveyor who was hired to ascertain the western boundary of New York.

After returning from his trip, his dissertation was published in England. I have the original publication in my library.

Comes down to this. The Horseshoe Falls makes it beautiful, but the American Falls makes it big.

Still, today's Niagara Falls is but a shadow of itself in the 18th century. Then all the water flowed over the Falls. Today a massive quantity is diverted into the hydroelectric system to make power for the two great cities it has created ~ Toronto and Buffalo.

Best place to dine is the world-famous Skylon Tower. It offers an unmatched 360" rotating view of the entire area. Its spectacular to eat while you watch the wonders below you.

Partly because the American side of the Niagara River is riddled with old (and abandoned) chemical factories, and the N.F./N.Y. city administrations have always been among the most corrupt around...

And as far as blaming Bush — the area has been one big Dem stronghold for the longest time now.

How about it is a shared landmark and folks like to visit both sides of the falls?
