In 1943, the Supreme Court, affirming the right of Jehovah's Witnesses children to refuse to pledge allegiance to the U.S. flag in schools, declared: "No official, high or petty, can prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion or other matters of opinion, or force citizens to confess by word or act their faith therein." Today that principle is routinely traduced, coast to coast, by officials who are petty in several senses.

The following is a true story. A close friend after several years on Wall street could stand the pressure no longer. He left and attempted to find a teaching position at some University. He applied at a large midwestern university. He has a PhD and had taught before being in the business world.
He was told by a member of the committe who interviewed him that all like him and thought him competent, but some objected because he seemed to be a REPUBLICAN.
He didn’t get the job. It was given to a Marxist Critical Theorist with much less experience, a PhD from a second tier school, but she said all the right political things in the interview.
My friend later got a job teaching in the South.

Only Congress has the power to establish a religion and they are restricted from doing so. A prayer in school does not establish a religion, and a manger scene on public property does not establish a religion. People saying the Lord Jesus Christ's name does not establish a religion. Using God in the Pledge of Allegiance does not establish a Religion. Congress passing a law that says we all have to go to the Glory Bound Baptist Church every Sunday establishes a religion.
Now, Congress is also forbidden from prohibiting the free exercise thereof. Hence, the law of the land says you can not tell me that I can not put a manger scene or the Ten Commandments up. You can not tell me I can not pray. You can not tell me I can not say God in the Pledge of Allegiance. Also, you have the freedom not to say it. That is fine, but I also have the freedom to say this:
Socialist/Communist wish to remove God from public view so you and I will begin to forget about God. Why do they want you to forget about God? Well, I am an American. I pray to my God and we handle my problems. I do not pray to my Government. Once people have forgotten how to pray to their God for help, they will begin to pray to the Government for help. From the cradle to the grave.
You and I were given God Given Rights (Inalienable Rights). No man or Government is allowed to take them away. IF you don't want to pledge to laws that are given to you by God then that is your choice. Just remember that man and/or Governments can give and take your rights away. It is imperative that we keep God in public view.
The Leftists were teaching when I started my freshman year in college in 1966!
And we’ve been paying their salaries while they’ve been indoctrinating our children for at least forty years!
As a result, more and more people are home schooling their children and conservative universities like Ave Maria University are popping up everywhere.

I have no doubts about your story. I’m guessing your friend was attempting to teach in a business school, too, right? That such an anti-Republican bias would exist there is truly scary.
I had originally considered becoming an art historian, and after talking to several professors, I was told that:
1) I would have to change my political views if I wanted to consider even applying to top Ph.D. programs
2) That I would have to shy away from my faith and avoid discussing it as a reason to pursue graduate study in medieval art. This in a field where men dedicated their entire lives towards building churches which they would never see through to their completion. Where practically all art centered about the church.
3) That I would have to keep my mouth sealed and speak the party line, at least until I gained tenure or had attained the standing I so desired.

It began in the 1950s with talk of diversity. Leftists were allowed into the academic community with increasing frequency. Schools like Duke and Northwestern began to loosen their ties with their respective churches... And then once the leftists gained control in the 1960s, they set up camp and denied entry to anyone who didn’t fit the rubric.
Perhaps the one shining spot in all of this is the Catholic schools for the most part refused to cave in the way that Protestant schools did. They were still seen in the minority and still discriminated against, so they held to their roots. Protestant schools, as part of the mainstream, were more easily dissolved. Catholics were far more suspicious out outsiders.
It’s why you see still mass regularly in the dorms at schools like Notre Dame and why you won’t find anything of the sorts at Duke or Emory.
The same liberal “disposition” is required in several colleges for teachers in training.

Would you have a problem pledging your allegiance to a country under Allah?
If you were in a country conceived under Allah you would be required to say so. There would be no choice. In America of course there is no such requirement.
