Dobson Admits Third Party Might Help Clinton
The Christian Post ^ | October 10, 2007 | Ethan Cole

Conservative evangelical leader Dr. James Dobson admits that a third-party plan supported by pro-family leaders might unintentionally help elect democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton.

The influential pro-family advocate still contends, however, that he would rather vote following his values than compromise and be forced to choose between two pro-choice candidates.

“We’re very, very concerned about the implications of a Hillary Clinton presidency, but you know, we have been working … for 35 years, I’ve been trying to defend the unborn child,” Dobson said on Fox’s Hannity & Colmes show Monday.

“That’s been my life. That’s been my belief, along with marriage and the family and the other things. I can’t now abandon that because we’ve got two bad choices here.”

Currently leading the Democratic race and Republican race are New York senator Hillary Clinton and former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, respectively. Both have been criticized by conservatives for their pro-choice and pro-gay rights stances among other issues.

During a meeting in Salt Lake City, about 50 pro-family leaders decided they would consider backing a third-party candidate if the Republican Party chose a pro-choice nominee, such as Giuliani

In an Op-Ed in the New York Times last week, Dobson explained the coalition’s decision and the reasoning, stating that as “vitally important” as it is for the GOP to win the presidential election, it should not be won “at the expense of what we hold most dear.”

His announcement that a core Republican constituency could consider withdrawing their support from the party next year stirred controversy and created greater division in the already divided GOP.

“Why would we not support someone who does line up with our values system, when we would have to literally hold our noses to support somebody that contradicts those values?” Dobson posed to Hannity – who supports Giuliani despite agreeing with Dobson “99 percent” of the time.

When further pressed on the possibility that his third party plan could help Clinton, Dobson replied that the elections are still far away and elections are “very dynamic” and “volatile.”

“There’s still a possibility that one of those other candidates, a dark horse, could come from nowhere,” Dobson said.

As the frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination, Giuliani has repeatedly stated he can beat Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton – an appealing statement for those who see Clinton as a larger threat.

A recent Gallup Poll also found that the former New York City mayor had an overall favorable rating from churchgoing Protestants. Among the top tier Republican candidates, Giuliani was rated third by religious Protestants after former senator Fred Thompson and Arizona senator John McCain.

Dobson is finally exhibiting his long repressed Pat Robertson gene. He has jumped the shark, crossed the line, gone over to the dark side. He has become irrelevant.

You know, Dobson hasn't changed. What changed is that so many people are seeing what he's has been all along.

I've seen Dick Armey recently on some of the talking head shows. He believes Dobson and his band are nothing more than thugs and nasty people. Well, jeez, what took you so long to recognize that Mr.Armey? Dobson was cool to so many on this forum because he never stepped on their personal third rail. Well, now he has. But the words Dick Armey has been uttering is the same view I've had of Dobson and his clan since the early 90's.

Didn't Reagan also say something to the effect "if somone agrees with you on 80% of the issues, it's prudent to not worry about the other 20%"?

I'm just sayin'.....

“BIG, BIG mistake by Dobson. Not sure how he could sleep at night, knowing he opened the door for Hitlery.”

The big big mistake would be made by the GOP for not heading the warning. How would THEY sleep at night. Dobson certainly has given them enough time for his “IF” scenario. If they don’t heed it, it is on their heads not Dobsons.

Yeah how dare he vote his conscience. It would be better to get another RINO at least like Jorge. At least we would putter off the cliff at 5mph rather than have ol Hitlery in charge where we go 100mph off the cliff, right?

Note to the weak spined - some people have spines and a conscience, sometimes its not easy to do whats right. Jorge Bush has been a complete joke - dont even waste your time talking about the war on Terror when he lets them into our country. Dobson has a point - I will be voting my conscience its about damn time - no more RINOs.

Look, I don't want Rudy at all, I want Fred (actually, I'd be happiest with Duncan Hunter, but he will only win the Presidency when I have my eyes closed). Fred's a real conservative, even if not perfect. Which brings me to my point:

The Perfect is the enemy of the Good.

Seeking perfection and, as part of the process, throwing the Good overboard, is a fail-safe way to make sure that you get exactly NONE of what you want. Dobson's either too foolish or too full of himself to be able to see this.

While I believe in life, Dobson's move and those who would follow him assures that we have in place someone who can turn the courts advances in conservatism back for 4 and possibly 8 years. It's the courts where the laws can change.

Pro-life people are sure to lose those advances with Hillary in the WH. They may stand a chance if work with and not against whoever the ulitmate standard bearer is.

Some chance is better than no chance. Some people would rather let the ship sink now rather than keep trying to plug the hole with less than desireable materials.

I havent ruled out Thompson but my point is that the attack on Dobson is unjustified. Dobson has proven himself to be true to character, he is not perfect but at least he has convictions and I can appreciate that after voting for one of the worst presidents of all time and a true deciever Jorge.

And not just Hitlery, a bunch of Supremes she could appoint that would surely be pro-abortion and make new binding rulings re baby killing, just what Dobson, the idiot, oppposes.

What will he do if Fred Thompson is nominated. Fred has a 100% pro-life voting record in the U.S. Senate.

I understand your support for Fred Thompson. That's fine. But why do you and so many others have to lie to support your candidate?

Fred does not have a 100% pro-life voting record. His voting record, according to Project Vote Smart's list of his ratings from National Right to Life, are:

And according to National Right to Life Committee's own ratings:

If you average the ratings reported by Project Vote Smart, you get only an 81.6% pro-life rating.

If you average the ratings reported directly by the National Right to Life Commitee, you get only a 66% rating.

These ratings are FAR from the 100% pro-life rating that you and others are repeatedly and incorrectly stating.

Thanks for that info, I wasn’t aware of it. I suppose Thompson is “mostly” pro-life. That’s why he could work as a lobbyist for a pro-abortion group.

It’s pretty sad when the Republicans have to fear Christians standing by their principles.
***Almost tagline worthy.

Dobson should better come out and voice his support for his favourite GOP candidate (I guess Hunter would come closest to his moral standards).

But Dobson would lose his tax-exempt status if he actually came out and supported a candidate. Technically he should have lost it long ago, as should any church or religious organization that takes sides politically.

Question: Dobson said that he could not commit to Fred Thompson because he (Dobson) isn't sure that Thompson is a Christian.

What if Thompson were Jewish?
