FORT COLLINS, Colorado (CNN) -- The editor-in-chief of Colorado State University's newspaper will keep his job after he published a four-word column that said, "Taser this: F**k Bush."
The CSU Board of Student Communications met Thursday for nearly four hours in a closed hearing before deciding to admonish instead of fire Rocky Mountain Collegian editor-in-chief David McSwane.
Speaking for the board that oversees student media, CSU faculty member Jim Landers read a prepared statement and refused to comment further.
"We see the editorial as an opinion which is protected by the First Amendment," Landers read.
However, Landers said the board found that the editor had violated the school's ethical standards.
"We feel that it caused harm to The Collegian and to student media. It is our judgment that his actions were unethical and unprofessional," Landers said.

So that’s the justification for keeping his job? If I told my boss to go f—k himself, think I’d have a job?
Just because you have freedom of speech, doesn’t relieve you of the responsibility of your words.
If he wrote a hit piece on the Hildabeast...he might even be Vince Foster’d...
Was there any real doubt? Colleges are Stalinist. Just look at Columbia. I bet he gets a job at NYT soon.
‘Yet, if he’d published an article titled, “F**k Hillary”, ‘
...the entire country would collective say ‘Ewwwww...”
(chuckle)
If Bill Clinton won’t go there....
Sure he can so he can go down with the rest of the rest of the leftist, loony losers at the dinosaur Times. But, of course, there will be a slot for him in liberal leftist television news which will also eventually go up in smoke because anything a leftist touches dies or is ruined beyond repair.
Losers all around. The outcome was a forgone conclusion. McSwane learned absolutely nothing, other than he can do as he pleases. The CSU Board of Student Communications shows that it is a toothless waste. Landers proves he has no backbone when he agrees the incident caused harm to the paper and the student media, and refuses to stand up for ethics and professionalism. There was a time in this country when standing up for what is right was a good thing. No more obviously.
Gee i thought we lived under a police state with Bush, where the opposition is always silenced. So where are the goons moving in to take this kid away to the gulag?
Of course I’m being sarcastic. But under President Clinton, when those things really start happening, we won’t hear a word from the advocates of civil liberties.
Oh, what BS. Just because he's "a 20 year-old" is no excuse whatever for this immature and disgusting display of stupidity. We have 20-year olds making life and death decisions in Iraq and Afghanistan, and behaving with courage, honor, and selflessness. It's not a matter of age; it's maturity, common sense, and decency that matter. This fool will never have any of those things even when he's 60.
Give the kid a break! It’s not like he wrote about nappy headed H@s or Phony Soldiers or anything...
did the editor ever explain how he blamed Bush for the Taser incidnent?
Obviously, the kid’s Parents have NOT gotten their money’s worth for his education....by now his command of the English language should be better....oh, and he helped the newspaper LOSE 18 advertisers and up to $50,000.
So now drool is an opinion?
Well, despite the wrist slap, ol’ McSwane may soon be out of a job anyway considering how many advertisers have pulled their support from his rag, to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars. This decision will probably not make them change their minds.
OK. Let's examine this for a moment.
First of all, some self-aggrandizing loudmouth gets tasered at a John Kerry event for asking Kerry an embarrassing question.
Then, in apparent protest of this tasering (at the Kerry event) this editor curses at Bush in print.
Did I get that all? Did I miss something here? I haven't heard anybody even question the logic of this.
And if he wrote a commentary titled “F—k Muhammed” he’d probably wind up with his head missing.
With freedom comes great responsibility.
This kid is stupid...I am free to say that. I remember what I was like in college. I was stupid too.
I dont get why we give so much credence to kids writing in high school and colleges like they are real jounalists.
Geesh the real journalists are stupid enough.
They should make the paper shield itself in a plain brown wrapper if it’s now OK to use vulgar profanity.
