Just breaking on CNN. Domenici is supposed to announce his retirement tomorrow.
(Excerpt) Read more at cnn.com ...
There goes an R senatorial seat.
Unfortunately, this will probably mean that Richardson will run for the seat after he gets knocked out of the Presidential nomination.
$hit. Bad news.
Good, fricking dinosaur. Hopefully more Senators will leave and the GOP will get some new fresh conservatives in there.
oh marvelous
Bear in mind this is a CNN breaking news-type thing. It isn’t confirmed.
Maybe a filibuster proof majority for Hillary isn’t so far fetched.
Confirmed locally in NM.
I wonder if Richardson can run for VP and the US Senate at the same time in New Mexico?
Yup. And he will win.
When these older guys get out of the chairmanships and out of the majority after having had it for a while the reasons for hanging on in office during their 70s starts to disappear. We saw it with Democrats in the previous 15 years and now we are seeing it with the Republicans.
This is another good reason why Bush getting involved to re-elect Specter was so damn stupid. You have to have the new leadership as it arises...you can’t wait.
No. Richardson will be Hillary’s running mate, and he can’t run for both offices. This will be the opportunity for the other Udall to run along with his cousin in Colorado. Frankly, the only name I can think of with viability for the GOP will be former Gov. Gary Johnson. Heather Wilson is too damaged.
Ask Joe Lieberman.
WaPo confirmed.
He won’t get the VP shot either. He has already done enough damage to himself that he is no longer a hot commodity.
JBJ did it is Texas in 1960 and Bentson did it in 1988.
Joe did it in CT in 2000.
We did not need this now. He has no groomed successor. If Heather Wilson runs for it, we’ll lose her seat, and we’ll be down to only 1 federal Republican in NM.
He’s a Clinton insider, they don’t trust anyone else.
Unless somewhat libertarian Governor Gary Johnson runs
Your right. He will win. Dispite the fact that he is bankrupting this state.
Tom Udall.
Lieberman was running for re-election. Lloyd Bentsen did the same in Texas when he was Veep candidate. It depends on the local election laws, but there is a big difference between that and running for the first time for two office simultaneously. Even if it was legal, it’d be pretty weird and I doubt the voters would go for it.
‘pubs probabaly under 40 seats in the Senate after 2008 election.
Former Governor Gary Johnson could be a good replacement.
“probabaly”
Note to self: use spelchek once in awhile. sheesh
That would require losing 10 seats. We’re not going to drop that low.
Doesn’t matter. She will pick someone as benign as possible.
I'm not that pessimistic, but I do think it's going to get worse for the GOP in the Senate before it gets better.
Steve Pierce would be my first choice.
Not benign... loyal. Richardson is the ultimate Clinton buttlicker. He’s not in the Prez race for his own campaign, but to run interference.
Udall would win the seat if he got the Democratic nomination.
However you look at this it will be R -1 and counting.
God help us all.
It seems to me that things are moving along some planned path, all pointed towards a Socialist America with Hildabeast at the tiller.....
A lot of iffy seats out there that the ‘pubs have to defend. Colorado is a problem with Sen. Allard retiring.
Somewhere on FR is a chart with the breakdown of seats up for re-election. Does not look good.
Gary Johnson vs Richardson - Richardson easily
Gary Johnson vs Udall - Lean to Johnson
Generic GOP vs Generic Rodent - Rodent easily
She will probably pick some other loyalist that has not been in the public limelight lately. I really don’t think it will be Richardson.
Those FBI files are comming in really handy.
We’d need an Albuquerque-based candidate. Steve Pearce wouldn’t work so well (and he’s getting long in the tooth, in his early 60s). Domenici was 40 when he was first elected to the Senate, and Bingaman was 39.
I’m expecting a net loss of about 3 seats. So about 46. Not good, any way you slice it.
Which means that there now is zero chance of a Constitutionalist Supreme Court appointment before 2011.
Although I do think that a strong anti-Hitlery wave could still get us the House back.
Evan Bayh
That ability varies from state to state. I think a majority don’t allow anyone to run for two offices simultaneously. And it’s always easier for an incumbent.
We’re paying the price for lack of leadership. I guess we have to be out of power for another 20 years before we get back in the loop.
We’ll hold Colorado. The ruling rodents there have bitten off more than they can chew moving leftward. We have a great candidate with Bob Schaffer.
Nope, it’ll be Richardson. Take it to the bank. It’s been the plan all along. They need to place a prominent Hispanic on the ballot, and he’s the only one.
Evan Bayh is the likely lamb for her.
I haven’t known CNN or any other network to mess up breaking news. That’s more of a Drudge thing.
Bayh would be a good pick for her but the RATS would lose a Senate seat. Not sure they will go for that.
Serious questions:
1. Is not NM already a "white minority" (and Hispanic majority) state?
2. And, thus, is it not already a part of "emerging Atzlan"?
3. If 1 and 2 are true, what difference does it make? What future do Republicans have there, anyway?
