Christian Conservatives Consider Third-Party Effort
New York Times ^

Posted on 09/30/2007 5:23:05 PM PDT by jonyyeh

Alarmed at the chance that the Republican party might pick Rudolph Giuliani as its presidential nominee despite his support for abortion rights, a coalition of influential Christian conservatives is threatening to back a third-party candidate in an attempt to stop him.

The group making the threat, which came together Saturday in Salt Lake City during a break-away gathering during a meeting of the secretive Council for National Policy, includes Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family, who is perhaps the most influential of the group, as well as Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, the direct mail pioneer Richard Viguerie and dozens of other politically-oriented conservative Christians, participants said. Almost everyone present expressed support for a written resolution that “if the Republican Party nominates a pro-abortion candidate we will consider running a third party candidate.”

The participants spoke on condition of anonymity because the both the Council for National Policy and the smaller meeting were secret, but they said members of the intend to publicize its resolution. These participants said the group chose the qualified term “consider” because they have not yet identified an alternative third party candidate, but the group was largely united in its plans to bolt the party if Mr. Giuliani became the candidate.

A revolt of Christian conservative leaders could be a significant setback to the Giuliani campaign because white evangelical Protestants make up a major portion of Republican primary voters. But the threat is risky for the credibility of the Christian conservative movement as well. Some of its usual grass-roots supporters could still choose to support even a pro-choice Republican like Mr. Giuliani, either because they dislike the Democratic nominee even more or because they are worried about war, terrorism and other issues.

While I am not thrilled by Giuliani's liberal views, I think we would be worst off should ANY Democrat win.

Maybe Rudy could put his country ahead of his personal wants and just bow out now.

Just wishful thinking from the socialists at the Slimes. They are hoping the GOP coalition will split, but who is going to vote for the Democrat atheists?

The problem with the CNP is that some members are also members of the CFR which is the very organization they are supposed to be against.

Rudy will not be nominated. Put your bump here to mark.

America will not vote between two New Yorkers for President.

Yep, worked out great when we all voted for Perot on “principle”.

Did Rudy win the primaries already? Am I logged in?

If Rudy is nominated it's possible that a 3rd party conservative candidate will win. There's no way in hell America is going to choose between a socialist Democrat and a liberal Republican.

I honestly hope someday conservatives will have a viable third party to vote for, because the Pubs have been drifting left for years now !!!

Unfortunately, it does appear that insiders are rooting for Guli. Dobson & co. don’t need to tell people to stay home if Rudy is nominated.

I will stay home for the first time since I voted for Reagan.

None of the Democrat Media-anointed “frontrunners” can hold together, inspire, or motivate the Reagan Republican coalition.

Republicans are in the Valley of Decision. We’d all better pray hard that they choose wisely.

Thhat would require self-restraint and selflessness. I do not think those are qualites Rudy posesses.

“Wishful thinking from the DNC Times.”

“Pray for W and Our Troops”

Yes! I also wonder why Christian Conservatives would consider a third party candidate when there is Duncan Hunter and Fred Thompson? Oh, I forgot that Mr. Dobson has told everyone to not vote for Fred Thompson. But he has not said anything negative about Duncan Hunter that I know of.

I have voted Republican every election. Hasn’t Rudy been married 3 times and this is the 3rd marriage for his wife. Oh yeah. A lot of stability there. And a lot of broken promises. Can’t vote for him for President. I would love to see him as a Cabinet member or some other position. But not President.

If Rudy is the nominee, it is more than his personal wants. And before you start flaming, he is not my guy...and thereon lies the problem. I don't like any of them as yet.

However, this story, if true, is precisely why Hillary will be the next POTUS. The Democratics unite behind their nominee. We'd rather fight amongst ourselves.

We, evidently, are searching for the elusive "all or nothing" candidate. We deserve what we get.

This is the Hillary Clinton Plan discussed over a year ago.

Manipulate into creating a third party Run.

Guiliani is a perfect catalyst and Dobson is falling for it hook line and sinker.
