Fewer migrants mean more benefits: Jobs open up to less-skilled Americans.
LA Times ^ | 24 September 2007 | Mark Krikorian

Posted on 09/24/2007 1:12:22 PM PDT by shrinkermd

...The first consequence of stepped-up enforcement is attrition of the illegal population -- a steady decrease in the total number of illegal aliens as more people give up and go home. Attrition is the real alternative to amnesty, and we're seeing it work.

The Arizona Republic ran a story last month explaining how migrants were leaving the state in anticipation of tough new immigration rules. Public radio station WBUR in Boston reported that "in the midst of the debate about immigrants coming to America, something unusual is happening in Massachusetts: Brazilian immigrants are quietly packing up and leaving." And the Chicago Tribune, reporting on the Pennsylvania town at the forefront of the resistance to illegal immigration, has written that "over the summer, when Hazleton officials created the nation's first ordinance aimed at driving away undocumented residents, thousands of people apparently packed up and left."

Far from having "unhappy consequences," these developments are improving the economic bargaining power of less-skilled American workers....

...in Greeley, Colo., "the line of applicants hoping to fill jobs vacated by undocumented workers taken away by immigration agents at the Swift & Co. meat-processing plant was out the door."

...only after a raid on a plant making leather goods for the military in New Bedford, Mass., were Americans and legal immigrants able to get hired.

....a Crider Poultry plant in Stillmore, Ga., the Atlanta Journal Constitution and the Wall Street Journal documented the benefits to local workers. The plant raised wages significantly, began offering free shuttles from nearby towns and provided free rooms in a company-owned dormitory...for the first time since significant numbers of Latinos began arriving in Stillmore in the late 1990s, the plant's processing lines were made up predominantly of African Americans."

"Attrition" may be the magic word for politicians to consider and support rather than debate massive deportations.

The LA Times printed this? WOW! How'd that get past their editors?

This is good news and exactly what some of us have been predicting would happen. Now let's cut off all the government freebies and watch the reverse flow across the border.

Bush had to be dragged away from his wage depression policies kicking and screaming....and look at just what the empty “threat” of enforcement has done!

Attrition. The other A word.

An Ann Coulter idea.

Don’t know about your areas, but around here blacks are showing up in jobs formerly held exclusively by illegals — Must be a replacement cycle, the illegals are getting too hot to hire, even at the no tax cash discount rate. I have lived here for years and never once saw a black in one of these slots, until recently.

The truth is the reason Americans weren’t doing the jobs is employers weren’t hiring Americans. I wonder where the race hustlers stand on this issue? Better yet, why do the race hustlers stand with the open borders crowd, when it’s a whole lot of their folks who get hurt in the process. I know the answer, so I will add, the race hustlers love permanent power as much as the next, and know that changing the demographics of the American voter is the best way for Democrats to get that.

I was shocked to see it was from the Slimes too. Living very near the "sanctuary city" of El-Lay, I can attest to the fact that the people of southern California ARE GETTING FED UP TO OUR NECKS WITH ILLEGAL ALIENS AND THEIR GANGBANGER OFFSPRING!

I've sent a copy of this article to big bad Governor Arnold and asked him why he won't discuss illegal aliens or sanctuary cities.

LOL!!! Dubya thought that he'd get back at us for scuttling his pet project (not too mention his Big Business backers).

The "law of unintended consequences strikes again". I prefer to call it returning to the normal laws of supply and demand. 12 million illegal aliens screwed up the labor equation.

Now that employers can't rely on illegal workers, they are having to provide market wages and benefits.

“Don’t know about your areas, but around here blacks are showing up in jobs formerly held exclusively by illegals “

Blacks were well represented in trades jobs with good wages and benefits (=$23+/hr) - carpenters, painters, bricklayers - before the illegals pushed them out of their jobs with greedy exploiting contractors.

The pure capitalists who support cheap imported labor working under the table in near-indentured status don’t really care about the real free market. They work around it by changing the rules in their favor.

A true free market is occurring now in Alberta, Canada. Without the competition of illegal labor, the oil field prosperity has McDonalds offering flippers and counter folk $15/hr. And yet these businesses are still making tidy profits and the province is running a big budget surplus and financing the rest of Canada.

A rising tide will lift all boats until you start stuffing too many people in the boat then it starts sinking.

No way! You mean forcing out the illegals means that employers have to raise wages to get their chickens plucked?

Whoda thunk!?!!

Being a honky, I wonder why the black leadership has abandoned their own people in America.......not a peep out of Sharpton or Jackson!
