There's a strange debate dominating the Democratic campaign so far. Hillary Clinton's calling card seems to be the experience that she possesses and that Barack Obama lacks. " 'Change' is just a word if you don't have the strength and experience to make it happen," she told an audience this past week, before promptly making the line the centerpiece of a new ad in New Hampshire and Iowa. "Hillary is the best-prepared to be president of any non-incumbent I have ever had a chance to vote for," the clearly biased Bill Clinton has said repeatedly on the trail this summer.
The contrast with the "inexperienced" Obama is meant to be obvious. But is it true? Mrs. Clinton has only been in the Senate for one term, not much more than Obama has. And Obama served in the state legislature before that, which Hillary never did. The only experience she has that Obama lacks is that she married a guy who was elected president and, as a result, got to live and work in the White House.
And that's the difficulty.
The idea that spouses gain qualifications through their partners' jobs is a radically new idea in this country. And no one seems to be debating it -- at least not publicly. It's not really about Hillary per se. We don't name CEO spouses the next head of the company when their partner steps down, any more than we let the wives or husbands of doctors perform brain surgery because they happen to be married to someone who does.

Oh yes.... A Monarchy of Criminals.
We already had the Roosevelts and the Bush’s. Please no more repeats. Not good for the country.
If they are royalty, then I will invoke my Royal Irish rights to stand and sneer.
That's the question, isn't it?
Aren’t we still in a Bush monarchy?
The Roosevelts are not quite comparable since Theodore and Franklin were distant cousins. It would be more like Eleanor being elected in 1952 because she had been first lady during the FDR years.
If you can stack the country with enough Peons, then they will accept that royalty is the way to go. Thus, the new royals open the borders and fight those who want the borders closed.
...and Adams, Harrison, Roosevelt, and Bush
John Adams=outstanding
(son) John Quincy=mediocre
William Henry Harrison=died month after oath.
(grandson) Benjamin=so-so (ex-Yank Gen. after Civil War)
Theodore Roosevelt=outstanding
(cousin) Franklin D.=rated excellent until 3d/4th terms
Geo. H.W. Bush=poor act following Ronald Maximus
(son) Duh-pee-eeew=*&@##%
If you don't break eggs, you'll never get an omlette.
It's amazing that some people still haven't gotten the word. Bush is just a figurehead. Cheney and the neo-cons are running the country.
Heck no! Jeb Bush for President!
"You may now kiss Our hand, Wretch!"
ditto!
i’ve been saying this for years.
i’m not voting for any candidate who is the son, daughter, wife of a politician.
i don’t care if it’s a pubie.
Bush is a -head alright, but I wasn’t thinking figure-.
It certainly is extremely strange.
What, exactly, is hillary’s work experience?
She was only elected to the senate because she knocked Giuliani out of the race at a moment when he was screwing up his life big time. And, of course, because her name was mrs. president clinton. No carpet bagger without ANY political experience could have come into NY and won without her connection with bill clinton.
While she has been junior senator from New York, what has she accomplished? What significant bills has she sponsored, what great speeches has she given to turn the nation in a new direction? I can’t think of one.
Her two moments of fame as co-president were the failed universal health care bill and the defense of her husband’s womanizing. Great accomplishments?
The only actual work she has ever done in her life was working for a corrupt lawfirm in Little Rock; her best known achievement there was Whitewater.
Some record.
Monarchy? More like Stalinist dictatorship. And Obama Islama Ramadana In Pajamas wouldn’t be any better.
