I’ll throw in my joe-six-pack type analysis here. The S. Korean pres. is a punk. He should have unleashed the Republic of Korea marines on Afghanistan when they took the S. Korean hostages. He bends over for every terrorist and thug he gets the opportunity to bend over for . . .
Truman had already withdrawn US troops from S. Korea in 1949 and his Secretary of State (Acheson) said we were not interested in influencing events in the Korean peninsula any longer.
Of course, when North Korea invaded S. Korea in 1950 Truman realized the troop-withdrawal was a disastrous mistake.
Truman got the UN to agree to take charge of re-winning S. Korea's freedom.
30,000 Americans died in Korea, fighting under the UN in the remaining 30 months of Truman's presidency.
The Korean War marked the first time in history that the United Nations sent armed forces into combat to stop aggression. Armed forces and medical support units from 20 United Nations member states, along with the Republic of Korea and Italy, teamed together under the United Nations banner to halt the attempted communist takeover of the Republic of Korea.
Worst case: The thousands of NK artillery tubes trained on Seoul open up and pound it to dust.

At Boston University, in one graduate department in particular, we had quite a few South Korean students, and it didn’t take much to get them to start pontificating on how they were sick and tired of the United States’ troops being in the country and “playing policeman.”
Well, as you know, if you know anything about academia, you’re supposed to sit there listening to this CRAP with furrowed brow and anguished empathy, nodding gravely that, “Yes, yes, the United States is so bad.”
Came the day when I just couldn’t take it anymore, and I finally said - in front of a huge crowd of these South Korean students: “I could not agree with you more. The first thing I would do as President is bring every last US service man and woman home from South Korea . . . and the second thing I would do, personally, is get you bastards to pay some reparations to my family for the two or three years or whatever it was that my Uncle wasted his time, energy and youth over there defending you ungrateful snots. Somebody translate, please, so that the insult comes across loud and clear.”
That was the last time any such discussion took place - at least in my presence. A few days later, one of the “higher ups” said to me in the hallway, “Oh, by the way, I heard about your little ‘editorial’ the other day with our South Korean guests . . . “ I thought to myself, ooops here we go. This senior gentleman looked around the hallway and whispered, “THANK YOU!”
