Presidential Nominee Mitt Romney Promises to Legalize Abortion (article title)

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who is running for the Republican presidential nomination, on Tuesday in an interview with Nevada television station KLAS said that if elected president he would allow individual states to keep abortion legal, the Washington Post reports.

Romney earlier this month in an interview with ABC News' George Stephanopoulos said he supports a constitutional amendment that would ban abortion nationwide. According to the Post, the "two very different statements" reflect a "challenge" for Romney as he attempts to be a "champion of the antiabortion movement".

In an interview with the Associated Press Tuesday, Romney said that giving states control to "fashion their own laws with regard to abortion" should be the "next step" in the abortion debate. Top Romney advisers on Tuesday said the governor supports a two-tiered process in which states first would obtain authority to regulate abortion after Roe v. Wade -- the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court case that effectively barred state abortion bans -- is overturned. The second step would be a constitutional amendment that bans most abortions nationwide.

James Bopp -- an attorney who has represented antiabortion groups and a top Romney adviser on abortion -- said, "There's no flip-flopping. There's no contradiction. There's simply step one and step two." Jon Ralston, a columnist for the Las Vegas Sun who interviewed Romney for KLAS, said he believes Romney's "moral positions conflict" with his "states'-rights opinions," adding, "I don't see how you can be antiabortion, be in favor of a constitutional amendment and be in favor of states' rights". This quote says it all - "I don't see how you can be antiabortion, be in favor of a constitutional amendment and be in favor of states' rights."

Then he is a liar when he says he is a Christian.

As my profile says I used to be a liberal and only became a Christian a few months ago. While I used to sit on the fence on abortion I’m now totally against it.

IMHO
Romney is basically saying if a ban on abortion couldn’t be passed, allowing the states to have their own laws regarding the issue the next best thing.

Either way, I’m not voting for him in the primary. This is just my take on his statements.

I think Romney is finished after this. He can go back to the Lawrence Welk band. We need some real conservatives.

Any candidate who favors overturning Roe v. Wade is saying the same thing.

proudofthesouth,

First congratulations on becoming a Christian.
And welcome to the family.

“Then he is a liar when he says he is a Christian.”

[Are you aware that Mitt is a mormon? Mormonism
invokes the name of Christ, but their beliefs
are quite different than Christianity - including
polytheism (belief in many gods), etc.?]

That doesn’t mean he isn’t a good person or sincere
in his religion.

As to abortion, it sounds as if he has covered the
waterfront!

Exactly. And why not support states’ right? Too few of our so-called Republicans even remember what states’ rights are -— Reagan did, and fought for them.

Exactly. Overturning Roe vs. Wade is step one in any conservative's agenda to minimize/prevent/prohibit abortion.

This board is teeming with anti-Republicans, anti-conservatives and Democrat trolls attempting to turn conservatives against each other. Actual conservatives have been praying for years for more Supreme Court constructionists like Scalia and Thomas so that Romney's stated position of giving abortion decisions back to the states could become a reality.

The first thing you do, if you want to prevent abortions, is overturn Roe!

How are you going to overturn Roe without establishing the personhood of the unborn, re the Fourteenth Amendment?

I agree.

For all the things Romney could go down for, I’d hate to see his position on abortion bring him down when he is RIGHT. Talk about distortion.

If Romney makes it past the primary I could vote for him. And this is surely not something that turns me off about him.

” I’m now totally against it.”

That’s great. As a father of 3, it’s really hard to see how anyone with a conscience could be in favor of allowing it to go on.

I’d hate to see his position on abortion bring him down when he is RIGHT.

Really? He also still supports the destruction of human embryos for the purposes of experimentation. Kinda funny, when you consider that this is the grounds for his supposed "conversion."

Romney will tell you whatever it is he thinks you want to hear.

I've always assumed that an overthrowing of Roe v Wade would simply see the abortion issue revert back to the states, where it belongs - and once resided.

I'm totally against abortion and would vote against legalizing the procedure in my state. Legalized abortion would likely pass, anyway, as it probably would in most states. Unfortunately, Americans are used to the idea of aborting babies now and wouldn't want to rule out the 'option' of legalized abortion. At least I would have a vote, unlike in the 1973 Supreme Court ruling process that installed abortion-on-demand via judicial fiat on every state and basically swept away the right of states (citizens) to individually decide the issue.

I'm not a fan of Romney and I think he'll fade away soon, but I don't see how this position automatically makes him anathema to conservatives and/or pro-life folks. However, I see how it appears contradictory and how it will probably do him more harm than good. That's the danger in a politician trying to be on both sides of every issue. Romney should have asked John Kerry how well that pose works.

How is he a liar? Did you read the article?

Step 1 - kill Roe v Wade.

Step 2 Constitutional Amendment to ban abortion.

Mitt supports both. It’s not going to all happen at once. Assuming Roe v Wade gets killed (long shot) and until a Constitutional Amendment passes (doubtful if that would even happen anyway) then certain states, CA, MA, NY, etc could pass laws allowing abortion.

Banning Roe v Wade would certainly be better than the situation we have today. I don’t think any Presidential candidate is going to be able to affect a total ban of abortion in all states anyway so its a moot point.

There guys are so bankrupt in how they try to twist Romney words!

Than in another breath they realized Dianne Feinstein evil intent.

Feinstein to call for abolishing Electoral College

None of these fools understand the constitution and want to rearrange it to suit their personal agenda!

Neither the Romney haters, or those like Feinstein have an honest bone in their bodies!

Someone ask Romney if he now supports the Ronald Reagan GOP platform that recognizes the unborn child as a person, and who is therefore covered by the Fourteenth Amendment.

You can’t logically do that and then say that the states have a right to alienate the God-given unalienable right to life.

Last I saw, he was still trying to take both sides, as is his wont.

That’s why he is tied in such knots. He has no moral core.

You overturn Roe by appointing constructionist judges who understand that the right to abortion is not found in the language of the Constitution, and who understand that a Federal "right to privacy" is a "right" fashioned out of thin air.

There are thousands of judges around the country who subscribe to this viewpoint. If appointed to the SCOTUS, they would all vote to overturn Roe vs. Wade on these basis alone.

The legal arguments for overturning Roe have rarely been about the personhood of the fetus. They have been about the overreach of the federal government and its impinging on states' rights.
