Danes say sorry for Viking raids on Ireland

More than 1,200 years ago hordes of bloodthirsty Viking raiders descended on Ireland, pillaging monasteries and massacring the inhabitants. Yesterday, one of their more mild-mannered descendants stepped ashore to apologise.

The Danish culture minister, Brian Mikkelson, who was in Dublin to participate in celebrations marking the arrival of a replica Norse longboat, apologised for the invasion and destruction inflicted. "In Denmark we are certainly proud of this ship, but we are not proud of the damages to the people of Ireland that followed in the footsteps of the Vikings," Mr Mikkelson declared in his welcoming speech delivered on the dockside at the river Liffey. "But the warmth and friendliness with which you greet us today and the Viking ship show us that, luckily, it has all been forgiven."

The organization which you refer to has been defunct for quite some time, and only exists in the minds of some Hollywood movie producers and TV shows.

Now, about that accident you’re about to have...

"As I am at least one quarter Irish I demand triple damages...talk is cheap."

I'll just pay reparations to myself on behalf of my ancestors. ;-)

I apologize to all the Vikings I have pillaged and the Irish I have plundered and the cannibals I have starved and the missionaries I have led astray. Apologizing sure makes my humdrum modern life seem interesting. I think I’ll apologize some more......
I’m sorry, so sorry for invading your territory and eating your porridge and stealing your magic beans. I sincerely regret toppling your towers and trampling your tomatoes and teasing your tabby cat. Please forgive me for alliteration and making up stories and typing too late at night....

more signs of the eventual extinction of the gutless white race

(partial sarcasm/partial frustration)

how did western civilization that conquered and dominated the world for at least half a millenium utterly collapse and lose all it’s guts from just the past 30 years?

“...and lose all it’s guts from just the past 30 years?”

The process began in 1939, when the Great Empires of England and France were eventually demolished by Germany, Italy and Japan, and then surpassed by the United States and Soviet Union in terms of raw military and economic power, and were shown up for the antiquated, ineffectual and rotten institutions that they really were. Particularly since neither country put much money (or effort) into the defense of the Empires that had made them so “great” to begin with.

Well, I for one will not apologize!

After all, I’m descended from a Viking who settled in County Kerry around 800 A.D., so I’m glad he settled in Ireland. (Athough I hereby disclaim any and all pillaging he may have been engaged in while there)

Yes, in 1900, one-fifth of the world’s population were subjects of the British Empire.

How did a relatively small number of British control so many Indians and Africans? Because, the British had developed an air of invincibility around them.

When the Japanese defeated them in places such as Singapore and Burma, even the British knew that the gig was up.

Well, when you have to BEG Indians, South and East Africans, Australians, et. al. to fight for that Empire, what do you expect?

I know from my studies that the British had considered their main defense problem (prior to the Second World War)to be Japan, and the defense of Singapore. And yet, they did nothing much about it. Except surrender to a militarily inferior Japanese force.

The British expected to lose Hong Kong, and reinforced it anyway, only to have the troops put up a valiant effort for three weeks and then pass into Japanese captivity. The Canadians who were sent (and survived) are still bitter about that.

The British Pacific Fleet was destroyed in the early battles around Singapore, the Indian Ocean and Java Sea, and when British sea power finally returned to the Indian Ocean, it was a force that represented nearly all of Britain’s front-line strength, but which was still smaller than a single TASK FORCE in the US Navy. The British were extremely fortunate that the Japanese Navy more or less forgot about the Indian Ocean, and that the jungles of Burma and eastern India were an almost-impervious barrier to further Japanese expansion.

The only French action in the Pacific in the Second World War was a small, week-long war, with the Thais, in which a French fleet (something like four or five vessels, none larger than a light cruiser) delivered a humiliating defeat on the Thais (big whoops!), and then folded to Japanese requests to occupy Indochina.

Don’t get me started on the Dutch.

What?!? We said "Sorry..."

Digging up the past like this is so farcical it deserves only ridicule...

You know, I'm going dig me up a Roman soldier and sue him. Something about crucifying my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. That ought to be worth a Lexus or something...

"Looks like we're in for it now, eh Cassuis?"

Did the apology bring the slain back to life? Did it restore the stolen goods and burned manuscripts?

What is money? It cannot mend a broken heart. It cannot restore the portals of a shattered home. It cannot breath life into the dead dreams of youth. I speak, of course, of Confederate money. - Joel Chandler Harris.
