Medieval crucifix found in Austrian rubbish skip

An 800-year-old, gold-plated crucifix that went missing after being seized by the Nazis has been found in a rubbish skip in Austria, police said.

The crucifix, made of copper and enamel, was crafted in Limoges, France, and was part of a Polish art collection brought to Austria during Nazi rule, Josef Holzberger, police spokesman in Salzburg, said on Thursday.

It was found in 2004 in the lakeside winter resort of Zell am See by a woman combing through a skip filled with the discarded possessions of a neighbor who had just died.

"The lady had a soft spot for old crockery and was rummaging for plates when she found the crucifix," said Holzberger. "She asked the deceased's family, and they said she could have it."

Last month the woman showed the crucifix to a friend who realized it might be something special and took it to a museum.

That’s a nice bit of recovered treasure.

But it’s nuthin’ compared to that jeweled box that some GI Joe picked up
in WWII and took home to small town Texas.
As I recall, when it was finally tracked down (maybe 5-10 years ago),
it was in the small-town bank. And had even been used for collateral
by the bank for occasional loans.

I know your joking, but it is a good possibility that some one in the 101st took it to Zell am See and then traded it for something. Could have found it in Berchtesgaden, where it was probably taken after it was stolen, a typical GI would have had no idea what it was worth or it’s historical value, just found it pretty and took it. Then traded it in Zell an See for something he wanted more.

LoL, 2 semesters ago I took a communications elective. Part of the course was News Media, we had several "guest speakers" from TV & Print including an editor from both the AP and Reuters. The one thing all those "news professionals" had in common was that none of them had degrees. It floored all of us. During the Q&A we would ask all of them what they majored in and what classes they took to prepare them for their careers and the most any of them had were a few writing classes at Jr. Colleges.
