...Day's story is a revealing way for McCain to open his book, for the success of the decision is far from obvious. In the very long run, it proved rightDay lived through the war, was an inspiring figure for McCain and others in captivity and ultimately came home to his familybut it was a very long run indeed. The lesson McCain takes from Day's experience is that you make the best call you can given the facts of the moment, and then you take your chances, come what may. Sometimes things work out sooner, sometimes later, sometimes neverand in the last case one has to be always open to changing facts and new arguments. Day's informed courage appeals to McCain, and that appeal sheds some light on McCain's own stoicism.
He has staked his presidential ambitions on the success of President Bush's surge strategyand not only on its success, but on the prospect that enough Americans will agree that progress is being made. He seems comfortable with, or at least resigned to, the implications of his decision. "I believe that in September and October we will have a chance to prove our mettle again, and that's what campaigns are all about," he tells NEWSWEEK. "I'm comfortable in an insurgent's role."

Does john McCain think the reason he is out of the running is because he supported the surge?
He is out because he lost the base and he sure as hell did not lose the base by supporting the surge.
Umm NO, he has wobbled all over. He has tried to have it both ways on Iraq. For the overall mission, against the way it was done.
Bush has been solid on the war. He is back to 40% approval.
Rudy G has never wavered on the war he is at, or near, the top of the polls.
The Democrat Congress did nothing for 7 months but try to come up with a way to cut and run from Iraq. They dropped from 50% approval to 14%.
Way past time the Politically Corrupted media start smelling what their are shoveling.
McCain’s problem has nothing to do with Iraq, it has to do with his trying to be both for and against everything that has come up.
But then this is Newsweak. They have never been intrested in the real facts, only how they can “manage the news”.
“Amnesty John” is not out of the race for being a warrior on our efforts in Iraq.
He’s out of the race for being AWOL on border security and illegal immigration.
The immigration fiasco drove a stake through his political heart.
Virtually everyone in FR knows the real reason Juan McCain lost his support among conservative Republicans.
Virtually none of the professionals on staff at Newsweek seem to have the slightest clue as to why McCain lost that support.
Question: How much do the FR posters get paid for their intelligent insights, versus how much Newsweek professionals get paid for their chronic stupidity?
McCain/Kerry F the POWS/MIAS
McCain/Feingold F free speech
McCain/Kennedy F American Sovereignty
McCain/Gang of 14
McCain/Keating 5
McCain/Terrorist Bill of Rights
McCain/Gun Grabber
McCain/Does not like tax cuts
More?
“Virtually none of the professionals on staff at Newsweek seem to have the slightest clue as to why McCain lost that support.”
They know. They just don’t want to say.
Only the liberal media ever considered John McCain as a serious candidate for the Republican nomination for 2008. Some day they will get over this.
Yeah, you’re right. And when you think about it, Juan didn’t have much support among conservatives even before the recent shamnesty fiasco. We already hated him for CFR, among other things.
So where did those initial higher poll numbers come from, earlier in the year?
RINO’s have the G-man as their candidate. Conservatives gave up on Juan years ago.
What support did he ever have to lose, that’s what I want to know?
“...Day’s story is a revealing way for McCain to open his book, “
I suspect this is referring THIS BOOK:
American Patriot: The Life and Wars of Colonel Bud Day
by Robert Coram
http://www.amazon.com/American-Patriot-Life-Wars-Colonel/dp/0316758477/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/105-0271471-4128417?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1186947190&sr=8-1
It’s a H-LL of a read and I’m ashamed to admit I’d never heard of
Col. Bud Day before I heard the author give a presentation on
BookTV (C-Span2 on weekends).
My take on this book:
1. DO NOT get it until you have a day or two to read it. You probably
won’t be able to put it down until finished.
2. The book gives a balanced view on John McCain; admirable in standing
up to the operators of The Hanoi Hilton and turning down an early release...
and not so admirable in his distancing himself from fellow veterans after
getting into the political arena.
>>The immigration fiasco drove a stake through his political heart.<<
the plan to censor political speech on the net didn’t help McCain either.
One thing you can say about McCain,he’s a well-rounded loser.
“One thing you can say about McCain, hes a well-rounded loser”
LOL!!
