Clyburn: Positive Report by Petraeus Could Split House Democrats on War
Washington Post ^ | July 30, 2007 | Dan Balz and Chris Cillizza

House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) said Monday that a strongly positive report on progress on Iraq by Army Gen. David Petraeus likely would split Democrats in the House and impede his party's efforts to press for a timetable to end the war. Clyburn, in an interview with the washingtonpost.com video program PostTalk, said Democrats might be wise to wait for the Petraeus report, scheduled to be delivered in September, before charting next steps in their year-long struggle with President Bush over the direction of U.S. strategy. Clyburn (D-S.C.) spoke with washingtonpost.com's Chris Cillizza and The Post's Dan Balz about the 2008 presidential race, the Congressional debate on Iraq, and Congressional approval. RedditFacebook Clyburn noted that Petraeus carries significant weight among the 47 members of the Blue Dog caucus in the House, a group of moderate to conservative Democrats. Without their support, he said, Democratic leaders would find it virtually impossible to pass legislation setting a timetable for withdrawal. "I think there would be enough support in that group to want to stay the course and if the Republicans were to stay united as they have been, then it would be a problem for us," Clyburn said. "We, by and large, would be wise to wait on the report." Many Democrats have anticipated that, at best, Petraeus and U.S. ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker would present a mixed analysis of the success of the current troop surge strategy, given continued violence in Baghdad. But of late there have been signs that the commander of U.S. forces might be preparing something more generally positive. Clyburn said that would be "a real big problem for us."...

I'm laughing and crying at the same time. Had sad is it that the Democrats fear a good report from Petreas? How sad is it that they are so invested in defeat that any hint of progress in this war causes them to go off the deep end?

This quote from the article speaks for itself:

"But of late there have been signs that the commander of U.S. forces might be preparing something more generally positive. Clyburn said that would be "a real big problem for us.'"

How disgusting that politicians are scared that their country is winning a war. Traitors.

This is an elected American Congressman from the Democratic party who thinks a good report from the commander of US forces.....is a problem.

These people should never be left in charge of our families safety.

We really support the troops, we just can’t handle it when they are successful.

This is an elected American Congressman from the Democratic party who thinks a good report from the commander of US forces.....is a problem.

And yet, every other American Congressman, including the repubs will let him get away with it.

Clyburn noted that while overall approval ratings of Congress are low, people still rate Democrats higher than Republicans. "People feel good about the Democratic Party, they just don't feel real good about the Congress itself."

This explains a 14% approval rating?

The DNC has become the repository for misfits and juveniles who yearn for the defeat of their own country. They need defeat, and if they can bring it about, whatever it takes, they are prepared to do it.

They reside in a philosophical cul-de-sac in which any victory for their country marginalizes them, and good news for their country is bad news for them. In fact any good news must be denied and repudiated for them to stand any chance at all, because if the good news happened without their permission or guidance then by definition it can only be bad news.

Bad news, victimhood and failure, on the other hand, whether real or invented is a holy thing, to be cherished and nurtured, proclaimed to the far reaches, while good news is smothered in its crib.

This South Carolina native thinks James Clyburn is nothing more than a dictator lacking opportunity. His mentality would result in an Idi Amin or a Robert Mugabe but for the right set of circumstances. Clyburn’s current attitude toward nonblack members of his congressional district is to tell them to go pack sand.

He is arrogance of a Clintonian level, a most dangerous man.

If we didn’t have such a contemptibly biased MSM the headlines everywhere would read:

“HOUSE #3 DEMOCRAT: SUCCESS IN IRAQ IS ‘A PROBLEM’ FOR DEMOCRATS”

The guy is the “Majority Whip” in charge of rounding up votes, and he openly admits that a large majority of the Demagogues want failure in Iraq no matter what, and will continue to push for our defeat even in the face of emerging success!

Oh, but the ‘RATs do “support the troops” as in “we support the troops whenever we stab them in the back and work to ensure the failure of their mission.”

Exactly what I was thinking! Disgusting, and more than a little sad to see what is becoming of my country.

The bottom line for me is will a sufficient number of voting Americans realize what party should control both the Whitehouse and Congress the next time around. Or will the large numbers of ill informed and often ignorant continue screw us all up. ONLY a lot of verifiable good news from Iraq will possibly keep the dimwits from screwing the whole process up. And I doubt the L/MSM will give a real sustained balanced view to those many millions who still don’t have any balanced view to go on. Most people hate war and conflict. Very understandable. Until they realize the GWOT is a long process that must be carefully executed by many nations in unisons, we will continue to have millions of dick heads that will vote for the wrong people.

Agreed. The Democrats have largely bet their whole hand on defeat and gotten way out on a limb. There can be trouble that saves the Democrats, but the extraordinary efforts of our finally giving the Iraqis breathing space and an opportunity they must seize. The window won’t stay open for ever, so they must become the huge force multipliers that they should rightly want to be.
