The power of public opinion (Illegal Immigration Elitist Barf Alert!)
Seattle Times ^ | July 5, 2007 | David S. Broder

Posted on 07/06/2007 5:19:31 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Former Sen. Fred Thompson has begun his unannounced quest for the Republican presidential nomination by telling audiences in New Hampshire that Washington is badly out of touch with the country.

As a senior campaign adviser put it to The Washington Post's Michael Shear, Thompson believes that "the politicians have lost their connection with what people really want and what they really expect."

Few if any of the other 17 men and one woman vying for the presidency would be bold enough to challenge Thompson's claim. The belief that official Washington is deaf to the people's wishes is a staple of political rhetoric for both Republicans and Democrats.

Let a reporter who is not running for anything suggest that exactly the opposite may be true: A particularly virulent strain of populism has made official Washington altogether too responsive to public opinion.

From Aristotle to Edmund Burke, philosophers have written of the healthy tension that normally exists between the understanding and strategies of leaders and the sentiments and opinions of their people.

In today's Washington, a badly weakened president and a dangerously compliant congressional leadership are no match for the power of public opinion — magnified and sometimes exaggerated by modern communications and interest-group pressure.

The latest cave-ins involve immigration and trade policy, and both are seriously threatening to the national interest.

The collapse of the immigration-reform bill in the Senate at the end of June means that the broken border system, which allows a continuing flood of illegal immigrants to enter the United States with no hope of ever attaining the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship, will continue for at least another two years. No one is talking of reviving the effort until after the 2008 election installs a new president and Congress.

The author obviously prefers a Communist dictator like Castro or Chavez that could give a rat's behind about public opinion.

This is a huge problem and comforting I'm sure to those who wanted this shamnesty bill passed. More immigrants/cheap labor for the big business partners.

I went to a fast food place the other day here in S.C. (we're on vacation) and tried to order something for the kids. All Mexican workers and the gal at the window BARELY understood what I was trying to ask her and never even did answer my question. Needless to say,we got 2 cheeseburgers with no cheese....seriously...we asked for 2 single cheeseburgers plain and received 2 single cheeseburgers with no cheese!

I disagree with his take on immigration.

David Broder is a long-time proponent of Globalism so he would. naturally, support the Shamnesty Bill. President Bush, the Clintons and Broder all want the same thing, a one-world government that sells America down the river. Why else would Bubba have gotten away with all our technology sold to China?

This sentence, The collapse of the immigration-reform bill in the Senate at the end of June means that the broken border system, which allows a continuing flood of illegal immigrants to enter the United States with no hope of ever attaining the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship, will continue for at least another two years, explains it all.

They don't mind the continuing flood of illegal immigrants, it's the fact they have no hope of citizenship that they can't stand.

All in America's interest, of course /sarc.

David Broder has fallen in love with the sound of his own voice, every bit as much as Ted Kennedy has fallen for his own, self-love. Whether in elective office, or merely nearby and basking in the glow, such men are inherently dangerous because they have lost their judgment.

Broder no more represents dispassionate reason, than Kennedy offers sober, honest politics. Yet both of them still have an audience because they've always had an audience, since time immemorial. "Tis a tale told by an idiot / Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."

Did I miss anything?

Broder as usual provides no facts that the amnesty was in the nation’s best interest or was desperately needed. It was strictly his elitist opinion yet he chastises everyone else, who see the effects of massive illegal immigration up close and personal and not from their ivory towers for having one. Sorry Davey but you lost so go cry in your beer.

Bush and the government could deport illegals like Republican president Eisenhower did. The government could enforce the laws on the books already but they are not enforcing them. They are not building the fence.

Republican President Eisenhower closed the border and deported all the illegals in the 1950's and he didn't need to give Amnesty to the illegals to do it. But Kennedy wants us to believe that the only way the border can be closed is to give Amnesty to 20 million illegals and their families. Does he think we are that stupid?

Kennedy and the Democrats lied in 1986 When they said the same exact things they were saying for this latest Amnesty: “That they would secure the border if we gave Amnesty to the illegals”.
Kennedy pulled that trick on the American people and Reagan back in 1986 and now they expect us to fall for the same trick twice.

The only things the 1986 Amnesty bill actually did was give Amnesty to 3 million illegals and bring in 20 million more illegals .It didn’t secure the border so that 20 million new illegals crossed the border..

So this new Kennedy Amnesty bill is just a version of the 1986 Amnesty . But now it will give Amnesty to 20 million illegals and allow those 20 million to bring in their families to the U.S.. Like the 1986 Amnesty bill this latest Kennedy Amnesty will increase illegal immigration and not enforce the border. 200 million 3rd world immigrants will turn the U.S.A into a 3rd world socialist hell hole.

Democrat Ted Kennedy wants us to fall for this same trick again like we did in 1986.

The fact that Bush could order guard units to the border shows that he could put millions of our troops on the border to guard the U.S. border. Instead Bush and the congress have hundreds of thousands of troops guarding Europe, South Korea , Japan, Iraq and who knows how many other countries. Bush can pull those hundreds of thousands of troops from Europe and put them on the southern U.S. border. Europe is rich enough to protect themselves .Plus Some European countries like France have nukes so no one is going to invade Europe. Every Democrat leader Reid, Hillary Clinton, Obama, etc voted for and is for this horrible Kennedy Amnesty bill. Every Democrat politician is for even higher taxes(communism), socialist government healthcare, fairness doctrine (destroys talk radio), global warming regulations that will cripple industry in the U.S.. All this and that democrats are for raising taxes knowing that we have hundreds of taxes and that they are so high shows that the Democrat party is a threat to the American people and their way of life. 70% of Democrat Senators voted for this Amnesty the last time . It would have been higher but they saw it wasn't going to pass and many changed their votes at the last minute because Democrats didn't want to be known as the party of Amnesty which they are.86% of Democrats voted for the Amnesty (cloture ) 2 weeks previously.

Anyone that thinks that this America destroying Amnesty bill won't pass if Democrats gain seats in the congress and Hillary wins (steals) the presidency is not living in reality.

The collapse of the immigration-reform bill in the Senate at the end of June means that the broken border system, which allows a continuing flood of illegal immigrants to enter the United States with no hope of ever attaining the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship, will continue for at least another two years.

Pure garbage. All we need to do is enforce the laws that currently exist. Broder simply doesn't answer the simple question: "Why should we believe new promises really and truly to enforce the law when the current crisis has resulted from the government's deliberate refusal to enforce the present law?"

Strange take on the problem. IOW, the problem is not the flood but the fact there was a dam to be broken?

Rule of law, broken windows

It's just an unfair law
it's just a little breaking
and rounding up the window smashers
is such a massive undertaking

So broken windows tolerate
and if your 'hood deteriorates
its going to cause such a scandal
if we go after the vandals.

So many squeegee men once plied
New York streets like trash barge seagulls
I don't think the city solved its problems
by making them all legal.

Yes it will be much worse if the Democrats/Communists win.

These Communists/Democrats WILL take it all away from us.

And Democrats want 20 new million voters which will guarantee that Democrats will be the only party in America. The bill allows those 20 million illegals to bring in their families from the 3rd world. So Democrats get even more voters. That's the main reason Democrats wanted to pass this Kennedy Amnesty bill.

Democrats want to destroy the American culture by brining in foreign cultures . The Democrats are cultural Marxists

Furthermore Democrats are economic Marxists and they want to import a poverty class, the proletariat.

These are just 3 reasons why the Democrats want to pass this Amnesty bill so much. But everyone blames it the GOP and Bush provides helps the media put the blame on the GOP.

And Michael Weiner("Michael Savage") and the liberal Media keep giving the Democrats thousands of free attack ads that smear Bush and Republicans to help the Democrats obtain total power. They fail to warn us of the threat the Democrat party poses.

Humm, let's adjust for "inflation."

Then... amnesty for 3 million resulted in...

Now... amnesty for 30 million resulted in..

Then... bring in 20 million more illegals

Now... bring in 200 million more illegals

Then... Like the 1986 Amnesty bill this latest Kennedy Amnesty will increase illegal immigration and not enforce the border.

Now... 200 million 3rd world immigrants will turn the U.S.A into a 3rd world socialist hell hole.

Bush could stop illegals from coming over the border today and send the rest home. Republican president Eisenhower did it.

What’s stopping Bush from cracking down on employers who hire illgals?

What’s stopping Bush from deporting illegals?

What’s stopping Bush from transferring the hundreds of thousands of U.S. troops that are now guarding Europe to the U.S. border? He put a small number of National Guard units there. Europe is rich and they have nukes so American tax payers don’t need to pay for defending Europe.

We don’t need another bill. Bush could send them home.

I’ll tell you what’s stopping him from deporting....it’s the states who bring in revenue from the cheap labor. Time to crack down on your state critters for that one.

I far as the fence is concerned, the DHS who is charged to build it is obviously incompetent. If Bush really wants to know why the Bill didn’t pass he can look no further that.

From the article: "The collapse of the immigration-reform bill in the Senate at the end of June means that the broken border system, which allows a continuing flood of illegal immigrants to enter the United States with no hope of ever attaining the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship, will continue for at least another two years."

In my opinion, anyone who crashes the broken border should NEVER "attain the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship" - not EVER. And the same must hold true for their progeny.

That must be the enduring, lifelong penalty for illegally breaking into the United States.

Sure, they can work here, they can have families. But neither they or their families should ever be permitted full citizenship, but instead, must remain "something lower than" citizens for as long as they choose to stay here.

If we give amnesty and "hope" to the millions already here, there are tens upon tens of millions MORE who will invade us.

No citizenship, ever. And no "hope".

- John

a continuing flood of illegal immigrants to enter the United States with no hope of ever attaining the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship, will continue for at least another two years. No one is talking of reviving the effort until after the 2008 election installs a new president and Congress.

Wrong. The citizens will keep the pressure to build the fence. If there is no immediate satisfaction then the armed citizens will seal the border by force. If the government and/or other groups try to prevent the citizens from exercising their rights then a Civil War is inevitable.

One more thing, I wonder what our government will do if the Mexican army slaughters US citizens inside the US?? Sadly, I really don't know the answer to this possibility!

“No, David Broder does not favor a dictator. He is simply stating his opinion that public sentiment is wrong with respect to immigration policies.:

Then Broder doesn’t have a clue, and should stay the hell

out of the discussion. I’m sure his 2 million dollar house

doesn’t have 3 illegal families living next door
