Tommy Thompson Wins Linn County Straw Poll

Former Wisconsin Governor and Republican presidential candidate, Tommy Thompson won the Linn County Straw Poll held today at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. Governor Tommy Thompson won with 33% of the vote. All Republican presidential candidates were included in the straw poll. [NOTE: This includes the unannonced candidate Fred Thompson, who received 2.7% of vote amoung Linn County Republicans]

"Linn County is Iowa's second largest county and is traditionally a bellwether county. Today's victory reflects the strong grassroots campaign that Governor Thompson is building in Iowa," said Chad Olsen, Iowa campaign manager.

Thompson is the ONLY candidate that has been in Iowa every week since the beginning of 2007 and will continue to visit weekly through the August 11th Straw Poll in Ames. Governor Thompson's plan is clearly working.

ABOUT LINN COUNTY, IOWA
Linn County is Iowa's second largest county , and is located in eastern part of the state. The 2006 estimate is over 200,000 people. Its county seat is Cedar Rapids, and it is one of the three counties that make up the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town of Ceder Rapids (and the county) is a major commercial hub of the midwest. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,877 km² (725 mi²). 1,858 km² (717 mi²) of it is land and 18 km² (7 mi²) of it (0.98%) is water. As an slight Democrat-lean urban stronghold, it is highly contested swing area, voting heavily for Republican U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley in 2004 but supporting Al Gore by a 10-point margin in 2000. Any Republican who can carries Linn is almost always victorious statewide in Iowa.

I guess that’s it. The rest of them should pack it in. It’s all pretty much downhill from here. I mean really, once you’ve got Linn County locked up, the nomination is pretty much in the bag.

With Tancredo and Ron Paul beating Giuliani, Fred, and McCain, I know this poll is full of crap.

Tommy Thompson? I wonder how many thought they were voting for F. Thompson instead of T. Thompson.

TOMMY Thompson for POTUS ping!

Welcome to the Official Tommy Thompson ping list! -- The ONLY candidate for President elected statewide in a swing state as a proven conservative!

Please Freepmail me if you want ON or OFF this list. Remember, despite what some freepers may think, Tommy Thompson is the ONLY Thompson out there actually RUNNING for President.

Tommy Thompson: The Reliable Conservative

Hmmm.... looks like the oh so popular Fred was on the ballot, and 200,000 Iowa voters had the chance to promote him. Instead they gave TOMMY ten times as many votes as "the other Thompson"

I'm glad the Fredheads think their guy is sooooo popular he's doesn't NEED to actually campaign for the job. Oh, and bringing up the fact Fred's "True conservative" voting record in the Senate is exactly the same as Lindsey Graham's means we "fear Fred", dontsa know. Yeah, Fred's just soooo darned popular and Tommy, who was elected statewide four times in a blue state", is a political joke.

2.7% for Fred. 33.1% for the "political joke."

Keep up the good work guys.

>> He even LOOKS like Bob Dole. <<

Thankfully he has nothing else in common with Dole and background is far more Reaganesque than anything Bob Dole ever did.

But for freepers who like the idea of running more drab Senators from "safe" states for President, there's always this guy named "Fred"... ;-)

The poll also showed Tancredo and Paul near the top - which proves it’s F.O.S.

Considering Fred Thompson's name was ALSO on the ballot, hopefully not many. If Fred Thompson's supporters are so dense that only 2.7% can remember his first name is "Fred", I suggest he find other volunteers.

Out of how many votes? 17? I live in Linn County, I read the local paper and FR, the candidates have been sending me snail-spam for months, and I hadn’t heard there was going to be any kind of straw poll.

I think Paul has more of a chance then you give him credit for, especially considering the mood of the country.
