Wall Street Journal. 6/29/07 | John Harwood

Sigh. When did the WSJ completely morph into the New York Times?

What a MARROON!

The latter, in industries such as agriculture, construction and tourism that employ a lot of undocumented people, are left to face the rising heat but no path toward legalization for workers the American economy plainly can't do without.

The American economy did fine without a flood of alien lawbreakers for many decades. The Wall Street Journal, the upholder of the rugged adjustments of the free market, suddenly loses faith when the rugged adjustment affects their country club pals.

IMHO We are going to have to know where candidates stand on an issue before we vote for them. If an existing candidate will not be straight with us we will have to run our own candidates.

We also need clear statements as to what we want them to accomplish while in office. We need a statement with identifiable goals (milestones) and when they expect to meet a specific milestone. We also need unambiguous measures for those milestones.

But that fallout almost certainly will pale alongside the damage to future Republican presidential candidates. Hispanics represent the fastest-growing chunk of the U.S. electorate.

He assumes that Hispanic voters are pro-illegal immigration. From the polls I have seen, that is a faulty assumption. Now, if he is talking about having illegals vote in our elections, well then, maybe he has a point.

With so many people opposed to illegal immigration, how could it hurt our candidate?

?? Tell that to a number of "get hard on immigration" candidates that went down hard in 06...

In a way, I understand Bush’s and Rove’s thinking.

Bush did respectably well with Latino voters during his time as Governor.

In some ways, Latino voters have enough in common (work ethic, social conservatism, etc) with the GOP that they could become part of the party base.

OTOH, I’m often reminded of my ex-girlfriend’s dad, a blue-collar labor guy fron northern Minnesota.

Pro-Life. Worked hard. Was opposed to easy welfare give-aways. Liked guns and going hunting. Believed in personal responsibility.

A GOP voter, right? No, he was a life-long Democrat.

I use him as an example because even though a certain group of the electorate may espouse GOP values, they’re gonna go ahead and vote Democrat in the next election.

I believe that’s the way it will always be with Hispanics - no matter how much we reach out to them.

The immigration debate also exacerbates the split between Republican social and economic conservatives.<>False. The former won the legislative debate.

And so did the REAL Economic Conservatives...of whom the author of this WSJ piece is not worthy to latch Ronald Reagan's shoes....note Reagan's true philosophy in his famous quote in the tag line.

WSJ editorial on immigration?

OK, I’ll take a shot of Pepto Bismol before I sit down to read it.

That has been a puzzle to me through this whole mess. I haven’t seen ONE poll that gives Pubbies the vote in Hispanic surveys. I don’t get it. Even in companies where the jefe stands up and tells them how to vote they don’t R.

The Wall Street Journal has made it clear that they are an anti-American institution. All they care about it is the perceived self-interest of the plutocracy.

Liberal media doesn’t get it.

We’re not anti-Bush.

We’re anti-sellout.

Now it’s the liberal media trying to sell us out. We get that.

GO BUSH.

Write on: Barletta knocks Marsicano off ballot

Lou Barletta won a third term as mayor of Hazleton by thumping all comers in an historic election Tuesday.

Barletta hammered Republican challenger Dee Deakos 1,343 votes to 80 in what appears to be the biggest landslide in city history. By percentage, Barletta got 94.4 percent of the vote, while Deakos got 5.6 percent.

The shocker was Barletta’s winning the Democratic nomination through his write-in campaign. He beat Mike Marsicano by a near 2-1 margin, 1,211 votes to 699, according to unofficial results. Again by percentage, Barletta got 63.4 percent of the vote to Marsicano’s 36.6 percent.

This sounds more like what I would expect from the Times or the Post; Bush is toast, so what, he’s the one who held the handle down.

The next president is going to be blamed for what happens on his watch as well; this crap ain’t going to get easier.

Especially the illegals who were sheltered all these years...and shoveled Welfare to...by the DemocRATS.

The 70/30 ratio of Hispanic voters who vote Democrat/Republican, includes a large number of Cubans and Puerto Ricans who tend to be more conservative. The new influx of Hispanics from Mexico and Central America will do nothing but create a greater disparity, until the Hispanic vote runs more on the order of 90/10 for Democrats. As more Hispanic immigrants become citizens, the Republican Party will suffer.

I know many Hispanics that are appalled at the US policy of giving away citizenship to people who went to the USA using false I.D, and turning away droves of decent Mexican citizens who had wanted to go to the USA for vacations, paid $110 for an interview that lasts 8 seconds, and not ever got to see a smile, or a HOWDY, how are you. Don’t be too quick to bag all of the Hispanics in the Democratic camp.

Exactly. If the millions of illegal immigrants in California were NOT there (but voting illegally anyway), California would probably be a toss-up state in many elections, maybe even leaning Republican.
