Doing a number on guns (Barf alert)
NY Daily News ^ | May 21st 2007

Posted on 05/21/2007 8:24:19 AM PDT by lowbridge

Well, golly gee, Gomer, that were a butt-kickin' gun giveaway down in ol' Virginny t'other night, weren't it? In case you missed it, something called the Virginia Citizens Defense League held a "Bloomberg Gun Giveaway" to raise funds to pay the legal fees of firearms dealers who are being sued by Mayor Mike for illegally selling weapons.

According to the league, the prizes were "a beautiful Para Ordinance [sic] PX745E handgun" and "a sweet Browning Varmint Stalker," and we thank the league for offering the rare opportunity to use the words "sweet," "varmint" and "stalker" in the same sentence.

The weapons were said to be worth about $1,000 apiece, which, as civilized people know, is nowhere near the value of a single human life, approximately 29,500 of which are lost in the U.S. annually because of guns.

That gun-related murder rate is bloodier than the death toll of the Vietnam War, which saw 58,000 Americans killed over more than 10 years.

But not bloodier than WW2 in which we saw 418 thousand deaths (407 thou military, 11 thousand civilian) over a 4 year period.

The annual number of Americans killed by firearms (29,500) is greater than the number of alcohol-related traffic deaths (approximately 16,900).

Note how the Daily News editorialist takes the entire number of Americans killed by firearms and compares it to only alcohol related traffic deaths instead of all traffic related deaths.

A gun in the home triples the risk of homicide in the home.

Phony baloney statistic.

A gun in the home increases the suicide risk fivefold.

Yet another phony baloney statistic.

There are more than 16,000 suicides by gun per year in America.

There are more suicides in gun free Japan than there are here.

A gun in the home triples the risk of homicide in the home.

FBI crime statistics say prove that privately-owned firearms are used to thwart violent crimes two and one-half million times per year, most of the time without a shot being fired.

QUICK GUN FACTS

I guess two and one-half million more rapes, murders and robberies per year would be preferable.

“There are more than 16,000 suicides by gun per year in America. “

So I guess if we took all the guns off the streets in America, we would now have 16,000 less deaths per year. Thanks for the info. I wonder if these idiots actually do any thinking on this subject or just spit out the drivel that the Brady Bunch feed them.

Notice also how these New York snobs think that anyone not as enlightened as they are must live in Mayberry and talk like Gomer Pyle.

New York City superiority mocking those Country Yokels. This is the second cousin of racism.

The only varmints we should be stalking are antigun NYC elitists.

They are the worst kind of vermin.

Except yours, author.

Your life isn't even worth the bullet it would take to put it out.

Yes. It is probably more accurate to say that living in a neighborhood where violent crime is a threat makes people 5 times more likely to buy guns.

>>A gun in the home increases the suicide risk fivefold.

>>Yet another phony baloney statistic.

Yep. Suicidal people are 5 times more likely to buy guns.

"PREFERABLE?" YES ACTUALLY!
Infinitely preferable to the serfs getting above their station!

And it’s not just the Post that thinks that way either, unfortunately.
One wonders who they will endorse for president come the fall.

A like minded “favorite son” of Gotham perhaps?

These are the very same New York elitists who live in gated communities and multi-million dollar high-rises, take chauffeurred limos to work and even hire personal bodyguards so that they may continue to live in splendid isolation from reality. 9/11 seems to have taught them nothing.

The good citizens of New York need to realize that I view their constant assault on my inalienable rights as an act of aggression. Bloomie is no less repulsive than was Saddam.

None of this means diddly to the NRA or to the characters who flocked to the gun giveaway. In fact, one of the winners, when asked about Bloomberg, made an obscene gesture. Right back at ya, fella.

You know, I read this sort of stuff and I begin to wonder if the terrorists who want to destroy NYC aren't maybe on to something.

Funny that today, another article on NY bemoans the fact that people are leaving due to high taxes. Between that, and the idiotic politicians, the heavy regulations, there is no reason that anyone other than an avowed socialist would choose to live there.

I voted with my feet, and will never return to NY. I have friends and family living in occupied territory (NY), and all are planning on getting out when they retire or sooner, if they can find work elsewhere, as I have.

As for the Daily Snooze, no one in NY pays much mind to that rag anyway. Probably because of the idiotic articles.

It tells you something about the level of conviction of the author of this smarmy bit of invective, when they won't even assign their name to it.

Just another gutless whine from the Orwellian leftist culture where cowardice is called courage.

It's not smart to insult people with guns; call them a "gomer" to their face and they might just kick your ass. If gunowners were 1/10th as stupid and violent as this a$$wipe insinutes, his breed would already be in danger of extinction.

The problem with the city idiots is that they all have the mentality that the rest of the country is beneath them and that we all live just to support them and their beehive socialist existence.
I hate cities, and I hate the socialist, entitlement, opressed, mentality that goes with that territory.
They stack people on top of each other so they can pack the polls with the entitlement mentality. They feed the fabricate mentality of the oppressed minorities so they can keep them in their rightful place and that is the democratic lines at the voting booth. Basically the democrats create and hold a population of social economic lower class people so they have someone to point to for their socialist programs and to control and for their votes.
Out in the real world if there isn't a job locally then we move to where there is work. Entitlements are something that embarrass us. And get this, Fathers actually stay home with their families and raise their own children!!!!!
Out here in fly over land, parents think education is very important and they do what ever is necessary to make sure their children complete high school and go on to college. Here in the small towns and cities Parents make the decisions for their kids lives. We do not leave these decisions up to the local gangs. Hunting and fishing are still considered family sports and we make sure our children know how to handle firearms safely and responsibly. Firearms education is not left up to the television set or the street gangs. I could go on for many more pages but I hope I have made my point. The culture of the cities is revolting to most of rural America. There are some good people in cities, they either are financially able to live above the reality of the streets or the save up their dimes and leave for greener pastures. With the accepted fact that our children are the future of our nation you need look no further to see the huge cultural difference between the democratic socialist cities and the conservative rural America. Less than half of the city kids will even finish high school while over 85% of the rural kids will become high school graduates. The percentage of the rural kids that will attend and or graduate from college is over ten times that of city raised kids. Which one of these futures do you want for your children? The socialist democrats will convince these highly trained masses that they have no choice of something different and no hope for success. So the inner city will stay full and the socialist democrats will line their pockest with money and enjoy their positions of power as millions of children fail to thrive. It is one hell of a plan and it continues to work like a charm.

That gun-related murder rate is bloodier than the death toll of the Vietnam War, which saw 58,000 Americans killed over more than 10 years.

They never talk about the lives saved per year thanks to private gun ownership. Sure, it's hard to arrive at such numbers, but Prof. Gary Kleck has estimated there are between 600,000 to 2,000,000 defensive gun uses per year. A one percent reduction in innocent fatalities would be 6,000 fewer deaths. A 5% reduction would mean 30,000 fewer deaths.

But let's consider death counts due to the type of civilian disarmament these social engineers are foolishing proposing. For this example, I will look at just one group, the approximately 14,000,000 civilian victims killed in the Nazi death camps. Let's do the math: 14,000,000 / (1945-1939) = 2,333,333 deaths per year.

If we amortize this same 14M over the years since WWII, that's still an average of 225,806 deaths per year. It would take 475 years to retire this debt at 29.5K per year.

Of course, one wonders how many deaths in this number (29.5K) were due to gang related behavior. Gun laws will not touch that percentage. I also wonder how many fewer deaths would result if all potential victims were armed, thus discouraging potential lethal armed assault in the first place. Lott's study (More Guns, Less Crime) has born this out and predicted its corolary: increased property crimes. I'd prefer retiring this number of miscreants through "natural attrition" using nonsporting measures.

I agree with your analysis, oldenuff. I worked in Manhattan for 19 years.

I have worked with some of the Manhattan “intellectual elites”, and I can assure you that “they” have utter contempt for old-fashioned American values (such as independence, honesty, self sufficiency, helping your neighbor). They are statists, pure and simple, but consider themselves the enlightened few who are capable of running things.

Bloomberg, obviously, exemplifies the whole sorry bunch of them. As does Giuliani, btw.

Fishing and hunting are as alien to these elites as is polo and weird art forms like cubism to most Americans. And they like heavy regulation and taxation to keep others out of their elitist camps.

We used to just call them “limosine liberals.” The term has fallen out of favor, but I think it still describes the typical Manhattan lefty quite well.

“We used to just call them “limosine liberals.””

Many of our East and West Coast Liberal Elites are so provincial that I have begun referring to them as:

“Urban Hillbillies”

The name fits as they appear to be clueless and without any knowledge of the world outside of their own little enclave.

While the liberals are focused on "gun-related murder", they don't want you to take account of abortions. That kind of murder is just fine in their eyes. The United States had 1.31 MILLION abortions in 2000 alone. Every other cause of death pales in comparison.

Its fun to watch “urban hillbillies” when there is a power failure, or the roads get icy.

We had a power failure following an ice storm in January. Lost power for about 72 hours. Two of the “elites” that moved to NH immediately made reservations at a Hilton Hotel.

LOL. All of my neighbors got our wood stoves, generators, shovels and snow blowers, and had us a good old time enjoying the beauty of nature.
