Pro-Life Advocate Encourages Exposing Komen-Planned Parenthood Link
Life News ^ | 3/28/07 | Steven Ertelt

Waco, TX (LifeNews.com) -- A Texas pro-life advocate who was one of the first to work to expose the connection between Planned Parenthood and the Girl Scouts says pro-life advocates need to know the abortion business works with a leading breast cancer group as well.

John Pisciotta's encouragement comes at a time when Susan B. Komen Foundation groups are preparing for annual breast cancer runs across the country.

The head of Pro-Life Waco points to significant documentation over the last few years showing that local Komen affiliates across the country have given money to the pro-abortion group.

"We’re trying to raise awareness on the link between abortion and breast cancer, and point out that it is totally inappropriate for the Susan G. Komen Foundation to be making grants to the country's number-one abortion-provider," he told Agape Press.

"Nationwide, Planned Parenthood is the industry leader in abortion," he added. "Here in Waco, Planned Parenthood since 1994 has aborted over 12,000 young babies — and left their mothers susceptible to many problems, including increased risk of breast cancer."

Eve Sanchez Silver, a former Komen medical research analyst and Hispanic outreach director, resigned from the anti-cancer group after learning that their affiliates had made significant contributions to Planned Parenthood.

She quit the group in September 2004 after the organization told her it would not stop funding Planned Parenthood.

"The Foundation has done so much for so many women through its programs and research grants," Sanchez Silver told LifeNews.com at the time. "But this revelation about Planned Parenthood and [Komen], indicates a well thought out funding strategy."

According to former Komen public relations director Kristin Kelly, Komen affiliates awarded $38.4 million in grants to support community outreach programs in 2003. That figure includes 21 grants to their local Planned Parenthood chapters totaling more than $475,000.

The donations have continued and the Aspen, Colorado affiliate gave Planned Parenthood a $12,887 grant last December.

She met with Komen officials in Denver in October and talked with LifeNews.com about the meeting.

"SGK officials did not appear to have knowledge of simple breast facts," Silver said.

Silver explained that the breast is an organ that is not mature at birth and SGK officials appeared to be surprised to learn that the breast does not become fully mature until after 32 weeks of pregnancy.

As a result of that state of development, interruption of pregnancy via an abortion before 32 weeks leaves breast cells exposed to estrogen, which is highly carcinogenic.

The two-time breast cancer survivor indicated the Komen representatives also appeared to be "more concerned about assisting women after they had contracted breast cancer, than informing them to avoid breast cancer risk by avoiding abortions and having [an] early, full term pregnancy."

"This is an appalling lack of concern for the women the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is supposed to be helping," Silver added.

During the meeting, Dr. Joel Brind, a professor at New York's Baruch College, said Komen's funding Planned Parenthood made no sense because abortions are one of the biggest causes of breast cancer.

He pointed out that breast cancer cases have risen 40 percent since abortion was made virtually unlimited in the 1973 Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade.

In 1996, Brind and other researchers conducted analysis of all the major studies done in the field to that time. They concluded that women who had an abortion before their first term child had a 50% increased risk of developing breast cancer while women who had an abortion after their first child sustained a 30% increased risk.

Sanchez Silver is now the director of Cinta Latina Research, an organization that conducts research into breast cancer issues and their effects on minorities.

Abortion is FAR MORE IMPORTANT to the left than women are.

That Susan B Komen crap is just another leftist, top heavy "charity". I wouldn't give them a nickle.

Whether or not the studies linking abortion and breast cancer are correct or not (I've seen very conflicting evidence), I can't imagine that Planned Parenthood has any valid reason to receive funds from a breast cancer prevention organization.

One less person being born means one less breast cancer victim.

Of course every legitimate scientific study that's looked for Brind's alleged abortion-causes-breast cancer link has found that it doesn't exist, but I wouldn't expect Life News to bother mentioning that little detail.

Cook your meta-analyses anyway you wish, Shrinker. These groups recognize the link.

Abortion is a liberal "sacrament." Anyone who has worked in big science will recognize the sacred cows of the ruling political elite. Abortion is the greatest of these despite the medical evidence.

I agree. We are told that Bush is hated by Liberals because he "stole" the 2000 election. He is hated because he is pro-life.

There is no medical evidence indicating that abortion causes breast cancer. There's one guy who teaches biology at a third rate business college, who claims there is, and a little chorus of politically motivated tagalongs who support his sorry excuse for research because it fits their political agenda. Real biologists and medical researchers, like the ones at Baylor University (not exactly a bastion of liberalism or pro-abortion activism) have debunked this nonsense thoroughly.

The level of "science" behind Brind's claims is several notches below the level of the laughable "science" behind Al Gore's wild global warming alarmism (note that Al and his supporters are also fond of citing lists of "scientists" who support their claim). But as long as it dovetails with anti-abortion ideology, conservatives who rightly guffaw at the global warming nonsense eagerly swallow the abortion-causes-breast cancer nonsense hook, line, and sinker. It's exactly the same mentality that motivates the anti-capitalism, anti-individual liberty crowd to tout the dire warnings of Gore and the sketchy scientists who provide him with his ranting points.

I have gone to that site, and this site also offers information regarding a link. This is very controversial right now as to whether or not it causes a link. It's hard to know exactly because some of the groups that claim that there is no link are pro-abortion such as The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

http://www.bcpinstitute.org/resources.htm#res2

Also, this site, Religious Tolerance, seems faith neutral to me, if not liberal/secular humanist. This is what they say:

"Our policy is to present all points of view on each topic. Our motivation is that women who are considering whether to have an abortion have the most accurate information available."

This is one link they pointed out, but they had studies from both sides so that people could draw their own conclusions:

"In reality, a link does exist. But it is rarely discussed. Physicians have known for years that women have never been pregnant have about twice the risk of developing breast cancer, when compared to women who have given birth to at least one child. 6 A factor in the pregnancy process appears to give women partial immunity to breast cancer later in life.

Studies conducted by Russo and her colleagues have suggested that that breast cells only reach full maturity after a completed pregnancy. Once this process -- called differentiation -- is completed, the cells are less vulnerable to cancer-causing changes. An early pregnancy hastens the cells' differentiation.

Dr. Russo said:

"A high-susceptibility or high-risk window exists early in life, between the start of ovarian function and the first pregnancy. During this period, the mammary gland has continuously varying characteristics influenced by ovarian and pituitary hormones. These traits change during pregnancy under the influence of embryonic and placental hormones.""

Anyway, my mom is a survivor. We went to the Komen walk and not to long after that we found out that they donated to Planned Parenthood. After that, we we never went again or donated any money to their group. I wish they would not donate money to PP. How is that helping find a cure for breast cancer? If they stopped, the libs would most likely come and so would the lifers so they would more and likely get more money.

The well-established fact that having a baby correlates with, and apparent has a causative relationship with, lower breast cancer rates, has nothing to do with the claim that abortion causes breast cancer. If a 14 year old has an abortion, and then has a baby when she's 20, her breast cancer risk is the same as if she'd never been pregnant or had the abortion when she was 14. Late onset of menstruation and early menopause also correlate with, and apparently cause, reduced breast cancer risk. The consensus is that anything that reduces the number of menstrual cycles in a lifetime, and thus reduces lifetime exposure to estrogen, has the effect of reducing breast cancer risk. A full term pregnancy reduces menstrual cycles by at least 9, and often more like 15 if the mother breastfeeds for 6 months. So the more babies a woman has, the lower her statistical risk of breast cancer becomes. The number of abortions she has does not affect breast cancer risk except very indirectly, if it reduces the total number of months spent pregnant during the woman's lifetime -- which it rarely does, since most women will have whatever number of children they want, when they want them, regardless of how many abortions they may also have along the way.

An early pregnancy hastens the cells' differentiation.

So to reduce breast cancer risk as much as possible, we should all make sure our daughters get pregnant and stay pregnant, promptly after their first menstrual periods. But of course, that wouldn't make sense, so we don't encourage that.

For the sake of argument, let's assume there is no link between abortion and breast cancer. How exactly does giving money to abortion providers help to find a cure for breast cancer?

Uh, the Komenites will have to get back to you on that one. . . in a decade or so. Takes a long time to concoct a spin for the unspinnable.

It just seems to me that if you are out there raising money for breast cancer research, then that's the ONLY place the money should be going. There are a lot of people who are happy to give money to help find cures for cancer, but that doesn't mean that they want a portion of their money siphoned off to help fund abortion.

When Mrs. rhema had the temerity to suggest as much to a sweet-faced woman who was raising money for the Komen group in a local mall, she got a look that would have put a layer of permafrost on hell.

It's like when the kids come around at Halloween with the UNICEF boxes. I tell them that I won't give money to America's enemies, and that they should tell their teachers to find something else to collect money for next year. I had a mother scream at me once that I was being cruel to starving children; I told her that she was welcome to bring all the truly starving children she could find to my house and I would make sure that they were fed, but that I wasn't going to be guilted into giving my money so some third world dictator could build another palace.

It's a shame, a crime almost. Keeping any possibility of a link related to abortion and contraceptives hidden, pushing their use, while searching for a cure. And now misleading younger girls through the GSA. I've been hearing rumblings of the Komen-Planned P'hood-GSA connection for a few years. When they latched onto the Girl Scouts and morphed them into some kind of feminist vehicle, I was saddened, though not surprised.

"This is an appalling lack of concern for the women the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is supposed to be helping," Silver added.

I wondered what Susan Komen would think? Would she be pleased that they've teamed up with Planned Phood, the agenda?

As an aside, yogurt companies, too, like Yoplait, have joined the bandwagon, the money train. I love yogurt and I eat yogurt because I'm lactose intolerant, I want the active yogurt cultures and calcium. It seems to me since they've joined forces, the yogurt is less than ever like what I remember as 'real' yogurt, just 2 basic cultures and 10% calcium, either too sweet or sweetened with aspartame. And prices are up. But, hey, if I lick the pink lid and mail it in, they'll make a small donation to the Komen foundation. Alrighty then...
