More than 200 demonstrators supporting the Bush administration's conduct of the Iraq war gather to protest a Lafayette hillside display of more than 3,000 crosses representing U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq. Thursday's demonstration on Deer Hill Road was one of the first stops on what the group Move America Forward intends to be a cross-country caravan ending March 17 in Washington, D.C., where it plans to mount a counter-demonstration to an anti-war protest.
Under a giant American flag placed there by pro-war demonstrators, a lone pro-war demonstrator views the crosses and anti-war protesters on a hill in Lafayette.
Pro-war demonstrator Bryan Welden waves a flag at passers by at a rally at the crosses on a Lafayette hillside.
A supporter of the U.S. war in Iraq holds a sign in support of U.S. troops during a rally Thursday in Lafayette.
Anti-war demonstrator James Grogan stands in the middle of a Lafayette hillside where activists have erected hundreds of crosses to represent soldiers killed in Iraq.

When will the libs erect 30,000 crosses for the Americans who died in Korea in 2 1/2 years, while Truman was president? That's an average of 1,000 deaths per month, under Truman, to free South Korea.
The libs might want to erect a small sign which would explain that many of the American dead were drafted.
They could also explain that Truman's administration censored the war correspondents, who were not permitted to criticize the conduct of the war and were not permitted to send demoralizng dispatches.

Where are the crosses and where is the outrage for the hundred thousand traffic deaths last year? For the people who died needlessly from AIDS (the ones who could have chosen to avoid the disease?) The thousands dead at the hands of illegal immigrants?
I get so tired of the anger over 3000 people who chose to risk it all to keep us free. Even one military death is too much, but there comes a time when you have to fight the Middle East playground bully. Our nose was bloodied on 911, and our entire culture is at stake. I wish the liberals would do what they were scared into on 9/12 and shut the hell up.

Funny thing is that pro-life conservatives started the crosses demos to mark the number of abortions in this country.
I know why the pro-lifers picked crosses. I wonder why the Move On people picked crosses? I also wonder if this is public land. Not that I mind crosses on public land, mind you, but it would be good to know.

I don't see anything wrong with a display of 3,000 crosses commemorating our brave soldiers who have given their lives. Of course, no other type of anti-war signs, etc. should be present.
I wonder if the people who put these crosses up, however, would object to a display of crosses representing the millions who have died as a result of abortion. I've heard of those types of displays being done, and there have been objections voiced by some on the left.

First of all, there are not 3000 crosses. There are a few hundred. Secondly, most of us are less offended by the crosses than we are of the death sign where they change the number of dead soldiers on an on going basis. It is like a countdown and very dishonorable to our troops. Also, since I am sure they probably never pray anyhow, they wouldn't know that it is a little odd to see the Star of David attached to a cross.
Also, I was there yesterday. One of the Gold Star Parents found that their son's name was on one of the crosses without the parent's consent. They were very upset to see this and they went and took their son's name down. It was very emotional. Very sad.

I am pretty sure it is private land.
To: SmithL
No mention of who owns the land.

It is private land. Some of us consider the crosses to be disrespectful and in bad taste, but otherwise legal. Their big neon sign, however, violated Lafayette's sign ordinance. I think the owners and the city reached a compromise where it was decided that violating the law was acceptable if the cause was sincere and far enough to the left.
I found a number of threads about this so-called memorial and added the keyword LafayetteCrosses.

Unbelievable.
But if the nitwit owner wants this on his property, I agree he has the right to do it.
Too bad about the left-wing city agreeing to allowing criminal behavior.

3,000 crosses representing 3,000 Americans who have given the last full measure of their devotion for effort in Iraq.
These types of memorials are as pro-Iraqi War as it gets.
