China Upset with "Baekdu Mountain" Skaters

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs registered an official protest after several South Korean athletes Wednesday held up a banner claiming Baekdu Mountain for Korea at the Winter Asian Games in Changchun, China.

China News, a progressive daily newspaper, reported that a head of Asian affairs in the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned an official from the South Korean Embassy in Beijing to officially protest against five female South Korean skaters who held a "politically-motivated banner that undermines China's territorial sovereignty" during a medal ceremony.

Korea's female short track skate team Wednesday grabbed the silver medal in the 5,000m relay at the 2007 Winter Asian Games in Changchun, China. The athletes' sign reads, "Baekdu Mountain belongs to Korea," referring to a disputed border region between North Korea and China.

"There are no territorial disputes between China and South Korea. What the Koreans did this time hurt the feelings of the Chinese people and violated the spirit of the Olympic Charter and the Olympic Council of Asia," the official said, according to the China News.

The paper said the official expressed strong displeasure with incident and asked Korea to investigate the matter and come up with measures to prevent similar acts. The paper said that officials from the South Korean athletic team apologized to China.

Part of Mt. Baekdu was reportedly ceded to China by Kim Il-sung, previous N. Korean leader, as an "appreciation" for China coming to the rescue of N. Korea during Korean War.

Such an open protest in Asian Game would rile Chinese regime badly.

Pinko gov. of S. Korea turned into a p*ssy when it comes to China, because they were so fixated on pro-North and anti-American stance that they are willing to kowtow to Chinese regime if it helps their cause.

Basically their argument is that NK is an illegitimate country and had no right to give any territory to China. I would agree with them.

I also agree that the SK governmnt going back at least 10 years have been way too nice to NK and get nothing in return but more headaches.

you know nothing about china-korea historic relationship.

Korea had been imperial china's vassales for over 1000 years before sino-Japan war in 1895.
before the 4th century,North Korea was even directly- ruled chinese provinces.

Re #5

Vassal relationship is symbolic, not territorial nor economic(no regular taxes to pay.) Mongol Empire was an exception to this.

You mean, China had some outlying administrative areas in Liao-dong/Liao-shi back before 4th century AD. It was not near Pyongyang area as some argue.

This things come and ago. This area changed hands many times.

Old Chosun had it. Han Dynasty had it. Xianbei had it. Koguryo had it. Balhae had it. Khitan had it. Jurchen Chin had it. Mongol had it. Ming Dyansty had some garrisons there.

It goes on.

Well, one way to solve all the disagreements and the N. Korean crisis is to make N. Korea part of China. China would be able to absorb it's 20 million people. China's overall ethnic minorities already number over 100 million people, another 20 million wouldn't change the over equation significantly. So, roughly would 1/3 of all Koreans would be Chinese citizens.

This would not be out of the ordinary. An example is Mongolia, there are more Mongolians living in China than in Mongolia. And there are more Tibetians living in China outside the Tibetian Autonomous Region (TAR) than living in the TAR.

So, for North Koreans to become a minority people group within China and an autonomous region would be a win win situation for everyone.
