WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Rev. Robert Drinan, a Jesuit who -- over the objections of his superiors -- was the first Roman Catholic priest elected as a voting member of Congress, died Sunday...
He stepped down only after a worldwide directive from Pope John Paul II barring priests from holding public office...
During his Congressional tenure, Drinan continued to dress in the robes of his clerical order and lived in a simple room in the Jesuit community at Georgetown.
But he wore his liberal views more prominently. He opposed the draft, worked to abolish mandatory retirement and raised eyebrows with his more moderate views on abortion and birth control...
Decades later, at the invitation of Congress, he testified against the impeachment of another president: Bill Clinton. Drinan said Clinton's misdeeds were not in the same league as Nixon's, and that impeachment should be for an official act, not a private one.

Good riddence...
He took the easy emotional and weak road - nothing to admire.
"Hope and pray that he is not in Hell."
Why?
Put that down under the 'be careful what you wish for' category.
I hope he is enjoying having Saddam Hussein as a roommate.

I admire him for following his conscience. I think he seriously misunderstood the words of Jesus, but he stuck to his guns and I admire that in someone.
Nothing to admire. A pernicious underminer.
Drinan will not be missed.

Another reason not to regret my status as an ex-Catholic.
A committed liberal anti-war guy who was forced out of politics by the Pope. He ordered priests, monks and nuns to leave government offices. Then guess who replaced him in Congress?
Barney Frank took over his seat. Well, that's the way it happened.

I don't admire the sin of abortion.
From 1971-1981, Fr. Drinan, often wearing his Roman collar, stood up in the House of Representatives and defended the legalized destruction of preborn children. According to writer and historian James Hitchcock, soon after the infamous decision of Roe v. wade, Drinan wrote a public defense of the decision, recognizing that it had flaws but finding it on the whole a beneficial judgment.
He then proceeded, over the next several years, to compile an almost perfect pro-abortion voting record in Congress, often speaking passionately about a woman's "constitutional right" to abort, even while stating that this right went completely contrary to his own conscience. (snip)
