As far as the Boston scare: dumb, dumb dumb. People are on the edge just waiting for the next hit and everyone with half a brain is looking for something out of the norm that might indicate a problem. Random electronic components strewn across a city based on an obscure cartoon that 99% of the populace have no idea of? It's like throwing firecrackers at cows. Of course there going to get scared.
Well, on the bright side of marketing, now everyone knows about this cartoon.
The best part of it all is that Ted Turner's network is going to get his @ss handed to him for the expenses incured. It's a beautiful day...

If the probability is 99.99999% non bomb and 0.00001% bomb, you very quickly run your response forces (and probably your ecoonomy) into the ground by "evacuating" (in both senses of the word) for every situation that is perceived as a threat by any group of nervous nellies.

I have questioned this on a few occasions. But in their defense, probably the majority of people seeing the Mooninite boxes probably weren't regular Adult Swim viewers.
Interesting, though, that they're so strongly "blue state" up their and dismissive of the WOT -- but they're the first to jump like scalded cats at the merest thought of a threat.
I still remember the first few days after 911, when all of my liberal friends would come to me, the one out conservative, and confide in me: "I'm so glad Gore didn't win..."
It's like they know that, deep down, they're p*ssies, but they just don't want to acknowledge their wrongness on so many levels.
Just an observation. Supposedly, one of my best friends, a comic book shop manager, is on some news clips discussing the reaction. Haven't seen it yet, but he says he's been on some of the news stations.
