Carter defends Mideast book as accurate

By CHARLES ODUM, Associated Press Writer 29 minutes ago

Former President Jimmy Carter said Saturday that the storm of criticism he has faced for his recent book has not weakened his resolve for fair treatment of Israelis and Palestinians.

"I have been called a liar," Carter said at a town hall meeting on the second day of a three-day symposium on his presidency at the University of Georgia.

"I have been called an anti-Semite," he said. "I have been called a bigot. I have been called a plagiarist. I have been called a coward. Those kind of accusations, they concern me, but they don't detract from the fact the book is accurate and is needed."

Following the publication of the book: "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid," 14 members of an advisory board to his Carter Center resigned in protest. Those former board members and other critics contend the book is unfairly critical of Israel.

"Not one of the critics of my book has contradicted any of the basic premises ... that is the horrible persecution and oppression of the Palestinian people and secondly that the formula for finding peace in the Middle East already exists," the 82-year-old Carter said.

Carter said he was pleased the book has stimulated discussion of an issue that has been "omitted from the public consciousness" for at least the last six years.

In other news, Carter defends his handing of Iran to the muslim fundamentalists as a great triumph of human rights.

You gotta give Jimmy credit. He's the one President that almost makes Clinton look good.

How can anyone disagree with him?

There will certainly be no more Israeli-Palestinian conflict once Israel is marched into the seas and all the jews machine-gunned by arabs like this anti-semitic old arabist bastard wants....

Carter should have left well enough alone. The Camp David accords is only thing he accomplished as President and now he has to tarnish it with this garbage book.

I seem to remember that during Carter's presidency there was a mini-scandal about his brother Billy's being "hired" as a "consultant" by some middle-eastern country. Hmmm...maybe it wasn't just Billy.

I couldn't agree more! The more I see and hear from Carter; the more profound the saying, "and the last shall be first" becomes. I do believe Billy Carter, even drunk, possessed more character and honesty than Jimmy Carter! At least he didn't try to pretend he was something he was not, and Jimmy Carter is certainly no leader. Has he ever admitted being wrong about anything? He has yet to come to terms with the fact that Reagan beat him soundly and fairly!

He literally had in his book that the Palestinians were being given orders from 'heavan above'.

What page?

"Hmmm...maybe it wasn't just Billy."

It wasn't. It was a bunch of crooks in his administration that he brought from Ga. and surrounded himself with, a lot of whom were caught with their hands in the cookie jar, and his buddies he sent to Tehran to shake down the Shah who didn't come through, and suffered the consequences of losing his country. Of course, the damage he did to this country is still being felt, but Carter didn't care because he is at his core an America Hater and if he didn't get his, then this country deserved to suffer the consequences. I would wager that Carter has as much stashed in overseas bank accounts as Clinton does since it grew exponentially at the interest rates we had back then.

I don't have it anymore. I underlined and flagged pages that corresponded to a Palestinian propaganda video and mailed them both to appropriate people.
