BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq's prime minister has told Shiite militiamen to surrender their arms or face an all-out assault by U.S.-backed Iraqi forces, senior Iraqi officials said Wednesday, as President Bush said he will commit an additional 21,500 American combat troops to the war.

Under pressure from the U.S., Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has agreed to crack down on fighters controlled by his most powerful political ally, Muqtada al-Sadr, a radical Shiite cleric, according to officials. Previously, al-Maliki had resisted the move.

"Prime Minister al-Maliki has told everyone that there will be no escape from attack," a senior Shiite legislator and close al-Maliki adviser said. "The government has told the Sadrists: 'If we want to build a state we have no other choice but to attack armed groups.'"

In his address to the nation Wednesday evening - exerpts of which were released in advance by the White House - the president said al-Maliki had promised that U.S. forces would have a free hand and that "political or sectarian interference will not be tolerated."

He also warned that the U.S. expected the Iraqi leader to keep those promises. "America's commitment is not open-ended," Bush said. "If the Iraqi government does not follow through on its promises, it will lose the support of the American people and it will lose the support of the Iraqi people

Al Sistani also said he supports a crackdown on the militias regardless of sectarian allegiance. It could be a good sign but there are terrorists who seek to keep it going.

Sistani's influence only shrank when he quit using it. His pronouncements still carry weight and should be a big help.

Okay, that sounds like a fair enough warning...

Now -- destroy all of Sadr City and EVERYONE within....

War, REAL war is a bitch... People get killed... LOTS of people get killed..
The important task is to make certain that it is THEIR people getting killed -- not ours.

We've played patsies to the Islamists for too long..
Humoring them and the Jihad and terrorism....

Now -- we NEED to show them the REAL consequences of declaring war against America.....

They are all going to put their weapons down. The US will declare victory and leave in a year. 367 days later there will be an attack by Iran. The media will blame Bush for cutting and running.

Who doesn't see this one coming? Right in the middle of an election year no less.

I think Bush gave the Iraq PM an ultimatum. I think the militia's collective asses are grass and Coalition and Iraqi forces are the lawnmower. Things are going to get interesting pretty soon. It's make it or break it time for this Iraqi government.

Iran will attack or we will attack Iran but in this case, I believe we have learned our lesson. We did exactly what you mentioned above, allowing them to throw a few pistols and AK's in a pile only to regroup later. This action allow letting Sadr escape alive, become part of the government, puppet Malaki, form a massive militia armed with heavy weapons led by Iranian special forces etc. etc. etc. We will supervise the job until all enemies are dead this time.

I hope the Iraqi soldiers choose to fight for their country instead of their religious sect.A fight with black tooth Al Sadre will test the allegiance of many Iraqi soldiers. I hope they pass the test and take out that lowlife Iranian puppet.

Well, that's the polite thing to do, before you convert them to dead.

Tiss rock en roll time. May the good Lord keep HIS almighty hand over our soldiers and Marines as they start to do what must be done. I would surmise the Iraqi forces will be amoung a lot of seasoned vetereans so this all may go down quite hard on the fat boys crowd, as well as those Saddamist and al Qaeda caught in the cross fire.

Either they stand down now or they will be knocked down. Several months of intense battle is coming. Bush told our people to expect more caualties tonight and they will come as a result of this final battle for Iraq mostly centering on Bagdahd and somewhat in Anbar province.

We have no choice but to stand and fight, look for air strikes to begin in the next week....maybe two.

They got their execution of Saddam and now they must make a concession of similar value. If they don't, then they die. They are offered a choice. Democracy in action.
