Facing new regulations intended to limit greenhouse-gas emissions by the electricity industry, California utilities are using their clout as big power buyers to snub "dirty" resources outside the state and push forward development of renewable resources in and around California.
At a meeting next month, California utility regulators are expected to approve a measure that will prohibit utilities from entering into contracts to buy electricity from resources that emit substantial greenhouse gases, such as coal. The policy, believed a first among states, implements a new state law that takes aim at global warming. (See related article.)
Utilities in the state are already moving to meet or exceed the new standards. Last week, for example, Southern California Edison, part of Edison International of Rosemead, Calif., announced a deal to buy a record sum of electricity from a proposed wind-power project in the Tehachapi Mountains that divide northern and southern California.
The 1,500-megawatt contract with Alta Windpower Development LLC, a unit of Allco Finance Group Ltd. of Australia, is believed the biggest by a U.S. utility. It will provide support for wind development in the region over the next decade. Financial terms weren't disclosed, however, so electricity customers have no way of knowing the price they will be obligated to pay for the power. A megawatt can provide power to 500 to 1,000 households.
Through a variety of programs, utilities are being urged to sign contracts so that 20% of the state's energy supply will come from renewable resources, such as wind and solar power, by 2010. It also is trying to cut emission of greenhouse gasses, from power plants and vehicles, to the 1990 level by 2020, while still accommodating steady growth in population.

PING!
If Californians want to deal with inadequate power supplies and frequent blackouts I say more power to them ( no pun intended). Just more for the rest of us.
Calling on people to observe 'greenhouse emissions' contriols all while sitting in their airconditioned houses and driving SUV's to work & mowing their lawns with gas run mowers etc etc etc- Big government stomping the little guys- great- Cali is such a model of American freedom- not! http://sacredscoop.com
Escape from California while you still can...
"California in an effort to do what it can to keep pollution emissions down should be chastised...just what do they think they are doing?"
Yes, this will put an immense amount of pressure on the utilities to go nuclear.
After the masses see the true costs of alternative energy, in terms of environmental destruction, reduced reliability, and increased cost, they will be clamoring for nuclear power.
Californians keep electing the kinds of politicians who believe in this kind of stuff so I would have to say at least 50% +1 want it. Hopefully the voters will wake up but I'm not optimistic.
Plus, she burns another $65,000. a month on her stupid show to tell me that, who knows how much power to publish her magazines, not to mention the complete WASTE of resources the paper is.
Hypocrites need to just shut up. All the waste and greenhouse gases comes from THEM enjoying there immoral lifestyles, living it up in $25,000 a night penthouse hotel suites, their extravagant homes, yachts, fleets of cars, and servants of all sorts running around doing their bidding.
These are the most wasteful people on the planet. One single liberal elite moonbat uses more energy and resources pleasing themselves than an average small town of middle class people does.
They have some nerve telling ME not to enjoy the good things in life I can afford.
"I guess that the population of California isn't decreasing fast enough for them. This ought to help."
LOL! Yep. Last one out, blow out the candle. ;)
Nothing wrong with that, except the government should go after those who do all the poluting. Instead, they go after the little guys, so these elite can keep on doing what they think they deserve to because they are above everyone else.
If you had said "50% +1 of those who vote want it," I'd probably have to reluctantly agree. The +1 went through the GovernMental indoctrination process called "Public Schools!" And worse yet... Even some Higher and Post Graduate indoctrination!!!
Nothing wrong with that , if less money goes to BinLadinland.
The following quote, from the article, is interesting:
...a measure that will prohibit utilities from entering into contracts to buy electricity from resources that emit substantial greenhouse gases, such as coal.
I notice they only mention the evil coal, not the less evil oil, or the virtuous natural gas. They all are fossil fuels, which give off CO2, when burned.
Nathan there was an VERY interesting segment on Fox news today that shows how conservative and Christian BOTH WAY outgive the dems when it comes to charity- so great was the difference that the interviewee could ask a person their party affiliation and almost guaruntee that if they were lib they were far less likely to give to charity to help others- this despite hte fact that the party of hte libs claims (falsely it turns out) that they are 'for the little guy' http://sacredscoop.com
