Climate fight goes national - Sen. Boxer plans action on emissions

WASHINGTON - Imagine the scene next month: Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger brings his California message of fighting global warming to the U.S. Senate, helping launch Sen. Barbara Boxer's campaign for national controls on greenhouse gas emissions.

Expect the media-savvy governor to extol California-style bipartisanship -- in contrast to Washington-style gridlock -- as the key to achieving results.

Schwarzenegger and Boxer, who will chair the Environment Committee, have touted the state's emissions controls as a model for national action.

Then, the TV lights will go dark and the legislative grind begins.

Even as public consciousness grows about the threat of climate change, the new Democratic majority in Congress will encounter many obstacles to strong emissions controls: industry resistance, budget constraints, disagreements among party leaders and the problem's daunting complexity and global scope.

She plans weeks of hearings, calling state officials, environmentalists and industry leaders, scientists and religious groups, maybe even former Vice President Al Gore and British Prime Minister Tony Blair. ...

And Boxer is not a liberal lone wolf on this issue. Sen. John McCain, the Arizona Republican gearing up for another presidential run, has been outspoken on the need for emissions controls, and pushed a modest bill that failed two years ago.

Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, recently wrote a scathing letter with Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., to executives at Exxon Mobil, the world's largest oil company, urging them to stop funding their ``climate change denial campaign.''

Last year, as Boxer noted, 53 senators voted for an amendment that stated, in principle, that mandatory action was necessary on emissions controls. The provision did not become law.

In effect saying you have no free speech. If you don't toe the environmental line we'll punish you. So much for the first amendment.

Way past time US Democrats renamed their party. Their "vision" for the US is Europe. IF they had any intellectual honesty at all they would rename themselves the Democrat Socialists Party

Bah, we don't need things like industry, transportation, and electricity... not when we can abandon all of them to counter-act a full 10% of China's pollution increase in the next decade! It's TOTALLY worth it!!!!
